BEHIND THE SCENES: Sketch Dump 1

In the process of going through my old work I've been rooting up some sketches in various states of completion--some of these were intended to be full pieces, some were just spur of the moment things. Some of them I might pick up again and finish one day, who knows. In any case, this seems like a good place to share em for the first time!

ART: Old Stuff, Part 1

Hey Patrons! I'm still working on some new stuff to share, but something I've got some requests for is high-res versions of my older work.

Unfortunately, past Samur didn't really plan to be doing this Patreon or do a good job of keeping track of files, so it's going to take some searching.

Here's the first installment--some of the more recent pictures I've done. I'm going to keep digging deeper into my hard drives and continue uploading older stuff in the future.

This is my half of a trade I did with buddy ArchieTHare, of his characters Jix and Rage in their band Cherrywhisker. They're taking a quick personal moment while the opening acts warm the crowd up.

This was a fun one to work on! With this and the Valentine's Day comic, I've been trying a slightly new way of lining stuff, doing a second pass of thicker lines after the first one. I think it makes the lines pop a bit more (I almost like the lines here better than the finished colored piece). I might experiment more in the future with coloring approaches that suit this sort of linework.

BEHIND THE SCENES: Happy Love Day

It's been an insanely busy last couple of weeks! I've been wanting to do more multi-panel stuff for a while and Valentine's day seemed like a good opportunity. And it gave me a chance to bring back these two freaks. ;)

I'm continuing to enjoy trying to compose values on the page. It's always tricky to strike a balance between the values and colors I want compositionally vs the "real" colors of the world and characters.

This one was really fun! I'd hoped to fit Moses in on the side here, but I couldn't make it work in this aspect ratio. He's standing just offscreen.

Clothes are one of my favorite things to draw, especially bulky utilitarian stuff. I also love the contrasts of the flashy swimsuit and the black jacket, Alexis's light and dark fur, the red patches and the cold background, etc. I'm pretty happy with this one for a few reasons. ART: Gris Suit

I'm wildly late on this art meme on account away from home the last couple of weekends, but here we go.

I wasn't going to do this one but I like the combination of the swimsuit and the battle jacket because it speaks to Alexis' kind of Amazonian personality--not friendly or approachable, but also not modest. I also found the idea of everyone drawing this swimsuit challenge in January kind of funny. It's definitely not beach weather around here.

This was a challenging one--I realized pretty late in that I drew all of the buckles backwards, except one! Fuck! That's a Coyote Researchers exclusive.

I'd not originally meant to do any kind of a background on this, but I learned a good lesson on one of my first Zootopia drawings--if there's a strong perspective angle on the character and no background to establish reference, it can look like they've just got a disproportionately huge head or something. Not TOO much exciting stuff going on with this picture. I've always had trouble with standing oral pics, because the Zootopia-proportioned characters have really short legs. It's a bit of a mess. I've gradually been moving toward human-scaled proportions, though, which makes things a little easier.

BEHIND THE SCENES: St. Loona

Here's the PSD! I wish I had a bit more process to show with this one, but here's what I've got.

The imps are pretty tiny here in comparison to Loona, but watching the show I found the character scales weren't that consistent. There were some scenes in episode 6 where Loona picks up Millie and carries her around, and those were close enough for my purposes.

3D Experiments

Here's some more behind the scenes content to get things started! The first is an attempt at a 3D Moses for use as some kind of Vtuber. That project sort of stalled out, but I'm pretty proud of the scruffy look I was able to give him.

Second might be a treat--some time ago I did little sculpts of Moses and my buddy Otterly's character, for use as reference. I threw them up on Sketchfab for free, so you can spin them around and even download them if you're interested.

BEHIND THE SCENES: Branding & New OC
