Cutting power to the conscious brain (Part 8)

Psychedelic states while meditating sober (Part 7)

Continued from my previous post where on my 7th day into the 10 day retreat I somehow stumbled into a trance state known in the Buddhist texts as jhāna. Actually, there are 8 of these jhānas and I found myself in the 4th one. Obviously I couldn’t be totally sure, but I followed the instructions laid out in The Path to Nibbāna and suddenly felt this warm sensation in my body rush up into ...

Is this really the best path to enlightenment? (Part 4)

So far we’ve gone over two meditation techniques which allegedly contribute to achieving awakening. To review, noting is where you try and notice every single bit of mental activity arising in your conscious awareness - itching, imagining, intending, planning, breathing, twitching, hearing - everything. Jhāna is essentially an immensely blissful trance state...

Meditative Trance states no one told me about (Part 3)

(Continued from last post where I talk describe the meditation “noting” technique)
To be honest, this noting technique where you sit down and try and notice everything that occurs in your conscious awareness seemed too simple to be worth doing. Meditation is typically thought to be a way to de-stress and relax, but when I sat down and tried the noting, it was actually very hard and quite tiring.

Speeding up your brain until it breaks (Part 2)

(Continued from the previous post)

I actually ended up reading through all of Daniel Ingram’s book before I interviewed him. Something about the topic was really compelling to me.

The meditation practice he used mainly was called “noting.” With noting, when you sit down to meditate you don’t just focus on the breath ...

Is Enlightenment real? (Part 1)

Have you heard about those guys actually trying to get enlightened?

Over a year ago I was talking with a friend of mine about learning and improving Japanese. Just as we were wrapping up, he asked me “have you heard about the subreddit /r/streamentry?” I said No.

He followed up with “Essentially there’s these non-monk guys who think the Buddhist concept of enlightenment is in fact real… and they’re dead set on achieving it.” This really piqued my inter...

Less Hunger after a Fast

Hey everyone,

So I just released a video on prolonged fasting called What happens if you Don't Eat for 44 Days? and thought I’d share with you guys a couple interesting things that didn’t make it into the video.

Regarding the apparent reduction of hunger after a long fast, a reduction in insulin might not be the only way you end up getting full more easily. As explained in the video, leptin is a ho...

Intro to New Video "What happens if you stop eating for a week? a month? a year?"

Hey guys, thought I'd get your opinion on the intro of my upcoming video:

In 2003, the famous stunt artist David Blaine spent 44 days without food suspended in a transparent box above London. He didn’t need a toilet for a month and a half because the only thing that came out of his body was the distilled water he drank.

What happened to Blaine’s body? We’ll get to that, but Blaine’s stunt pales in comparison to the man who entered the Guiness Book of World Rec...

Are peanuts bad?

Question from Trong: Are polyunsaturated fats from peanuts and chia seeds just as harmful as the ones found in vegetable oils? I enjoy eating peanuts and chia seeds for the fiber but am not sure if I should continue it.

For context: I’m guessing Trong had this question after seeing a recent video of mine explaining why vegetable oils are bad for health. This is a good question, and I would rephrase it as “...

Comment on "Protein is not protein. Here's why"

Hey everyone,

Thought I'd share some thoughts on my new Protein is not protein video.

Unsurprisingly there’s a couple comments asking me things like "are you getting paid by the meat industry for this video?" That's not really the intention, which is why I acknowledged more than once that you can technically hit y...

Interview with Dr. Ingram: The Arahant (enlightened being)

Hey everyone,

Last minute, but in 10 hours I'll be interviewing a really interesting guy, Daniel Ingram, the ER Doctor and "Arahant."

Arahant or "Arhat" is the last stage of the four stages of enlightenment in Buddhism.  That is, he's a fully enlightened or "awakened" person. (The difference between an Arhat and a "Buddha" is a Buddha figured out how to get enlightened all by themselves, where an Arhat was taught the path to enlightenment.)
