Hands still raised above his head, Zed looked at his new assailant. “What?”

He ran through his memory, the little he could remember, looking for the word. He found it in the archives of his mind where a child had played video games and laughed with his brothers. There was no sense in being asked about a video game in such a situation, so he thought better of it. He dug deeper as he stared into the barrel of the shotgun.

With his new set of memories, no matter how broken, Zed felt a new sensation. One that made his heart beat faster and his eyes waver. He turned his head from side to side. Certain he was still alone, he got back to his feet and turned left.

Chapter 4: An Odd Name

On the other side of the road was a scantier body of woods opposing the one behind Zed. Its trees were dry and rough at a glance. They lacked leaves or any particular girth, and he saw through them very easily. It was as though the one he’d just left had stolen and drained whatever nutrients its counterpart was meant to live off.

It was almost pitiful.

Chapter 3: This Is Not A Safe Zone

Zed hid behind a massive tree of verdigris green. He panted horribly, his breath coming labored and heavily. In one hand he held a massive length of wood. Somewhere in the past two hours he’d been forced to pull it out of the corpse of a beast lying dead.

He chuckled lightly. One moment you’re Samson, the next you could be a first born son in Egypt after a great plague. He shook his head and peeked over the corner of the tree. Life comes at you fast.

Zed laid down for a while, basking in the absence of pain. His body had unfurled itself and the breeze was cold against his bloodied skin. He didn’t know much concerning what had happened but he knew one thing: he needed to get clean.
