The Nanny Has Bad Gaydar

“A Fine Friendship” (February 6, 1995)

One hundred episodes later, we return to The Nanny to find out what happens when Fran Fine mistakes a straight guy for a gay guy. This episode essnetially works as an inverse to the first Nanny episode we covered, right down to Fran being horrified by a gay-seeming person being straight rather than delighted by a straight-seeming person being ga...

Twelve days into June, here is May's GEE Movie Club selection, the 1985 comedy mystery classic, Clue. Please enjoy to the extent that you feel reasonable.

What Should GEE Movie Club Cover in June?

It seems like you all enjoyed suggesting films for GEE Movie Club last month — that episode is going live tomorrow, BTW! — so I decided we're doing it again for June. One catch, though: It has to be an 80s movie — something released between Jan. 1, 1980 and Dec. 31, 1989.

Post suggestions below!

NewsRadio Never Did a Gay Episode

“Halloween” (October 30, 1996)

Considering that every other major Must See TV sitcom did at least one gay episode, it’s surprising that NewsRadio didn’t — especially when you consider the fact that its lead actor, Dave Foley, jumped straight to NBC from Kids in the Hall, which experimented with gender and sexuality a lot more freely. This episode was as close as we could find to a real gay episode. And while it does feature Dave Foley donning drag once again, there’s a lot m...

Running Late This Week!

Hi, all. Apologies, but we've had some work conflicts and tech problems. This week's early Patreon episode will be going live Friday evening/Saturday morning, and Clue will be going live on Sunday. Please accept this photo of Thurman as a token of my regret.

What Should Drew and Glen Talk About This Month?

The May edition of Drew & Glen Talk About anything is live — and ready for patrons supporting us at the $10-a-month level! But we're already taking suggestions for topics for June's installment. Post them here, and I'll collect these in a poll later in the month.

A special restriction this month: no suggestions about TV. Think big, think weird! I mean, it is called Drew & Glen Talk Ab...

Rosa Diaz Is Bi

“Game Night” (December 12, 2017)

Right off the top of the bat, we need to admit that yes, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a show about cops. There’s no getting around that. We try our best to discuss how to weight its copaganda status against every other aspect of the show, and while we’re not going to try to sell anyone on this show, we will say that dismissing it means skipping over one of the better episodes of a sitcom ever to address bisexuality head-on. Speaking of addressing bisexu...

Troy McClure Isn’t Gay, But…

“A Fish Called Selma” (March 24, 1996)

In this episode, The Simpsons send up the glass closets of Hollywood and what some actors are willing to do to pass for “normal.” Troy McClure explicitly says he’s not gay, but the way the industry treats him for not fitting the leading man mold and what he does to find success anyway parallels what a lot of gay stars have done and what some are still doing.

The Cartoons That Made Us Gay: The Legend of Zelda

“The White Knight” and “Kiss ’n‘ Tell” (September 22 and September 29, 1989)

Zelda had an animated series for all of thirteen episodes in 1989, and while most people’s memories of it amount to “Excuse me, princess,” it’s at least a better show than the Mario cartoons it was shoehorned in with in that The Legend of Zelda actually embraced the fantasy world of Hyrule and seemed to want to fill in the blanks left by Zelda 1 and Zelda 2. We’re focusing on two episodes ...

Janet from The Good Place Is a Nonbinary Icon

“Janet(s)” (December 6, 2018)

Spoiler warning: We totally spoil The Good Place, so if you have not seen it and want to go in fresh, go do that!

It seems weird that The Good Place was a show on a broadcast network at all, much less one that ran for four seasons and gave viewers so much to think about. Perhaps one of the more surprising aspects was D’Arcy Carden’s Janet, who rose above “Busty Alexa” status to become one of the more interesting characters. Janet is not no...

Disclaimer: we cannot guarantee that you will find all takes equally hot, nor can we guarantee that you will find this episode to be spectacular.

We did not, in the end, have time to get to every hot take submitted by listeners, but we thank you for submitting anyway and...

Hey, everyone! It's Coach!

Again, scheduling has been a real nightmare this past week, but check out the art for last week's Patreon episode, by Ian O'Phelan.

Coach Meets a Gay Guy

“A Real Guy’s Guy” (October 25,1991)

Hear us out here: Coach is a good sitcom even if you don’t like football. In fact, Drew likes Coach even though he actively despises football. This fourth-season episode has Craig T. Nelson’s character reacting to news that one of his players is gay, and it’s actually pretty flawless in terms of what a gay episode can be: a sympathetically written one-off queer character + a realistic model for how someone who isn’t comfortable around L...

The art for our Girlfriends episode

Schedules being what they are, sometimes the episode art is not ready by the time the actual episode goes live. And I'd normally just pop it in, but our artist Ian really knocked this portrait of Tracee Ellis Ross out of the park, so I thought I'd post it on its own so every can see.

Hot Takes + a GEE Discord

Hi all.

We are two weeks away from out 150th episode, and we are celebrating with an episode all about hot takes, wherein Drew and Glen share opinions about pop culture that may or may not be considered hot. However, because we love you, we are asking you all to submit your potentially controversial opinions as well, which we will read in the 150th episode.

We are asking that we try to stick to pop culture-related hot takes — something that would make sense for us to be discussi...

“And Baby Makes Four” (November 3, 2003)

Before she was the literal mom on Blackish, Tracee Ellis Ross was the glue holding the figurative family together for eight seasons on Girlfriends. The Cartoons That Made Us Gay: Beverly Hills Teens

“Camp Camping” (October 8, 1987)

Created specifically as a response to militaristic, toyetic boys’ cartoons, Beverly Hills Teens offered a fantasy version of Los Angeles’ most famous zip code, where adults largely don’t exist, everyone has the same face and little gay boys have not one but two role models: Pierce Thorndyke and Bianca Dupree, who are opposite sides if the same queeny coin. The episode might not hold up as much as we’d like, but there’s enough queer-weirdnes...

Madame’s Place Was TV’s First Gay Puppet Sitcom

“#001” (September 20, 1982)

Look, Madame’s Place wasn’t a good sitcom, but it was the gayest puppet-focused sitcom and also a contender for one of the first gay sitcoms, on account of its draggy sensibility and the fact that the man behind Madame was one of the first openly gay entertainers. Drew and Glen discuss how weird this show is, including the fact that its antagonist is a TV executive who’s literally missing a face and who can control the weather. All this plus dick jo...

Just the Ten of Us Almost Did a Gay Episode

“Betrayal” (September 13, 1989)

You might classify Just the Ten of Us with rest of the TGIF also-rans, but trust us: this show was better — funnier, edgier and with two actual, explicit gay jokes that ran on the same night as Urkel, to say nothing of the fact that its four sexy teenage daughters gave little gay boys a favorite no matter what kind of diva they’d end up worshipping. GEE Movie Club for April: Watcher in the Woods

You now how live-action Disney movies got all weird in the late 70s and early 80s? Well, perhaps the best example of this trend is 1980's Watcher in the Woods. It's enough that it stars Bette Davis, future Real Housewife Kyle Richards and figure skater-turned Bond girl Lynn-Holly Johnson. But the fact that someone at Disney was like "hey, what if we did a horror movie?" puts it over the top.

As always, post any comments, questions or criticisms in the comments field, and we'll address t...
