Personally, I’m not a fan of pumpkins, since they trigger allergy symptoms for me.

Also, tracing back its origins, the jack-o'-lantern represents will-o'-the-wisps. Translating “jack-o’-lantern” directly gives “鬼灯(hōzuki)” which in terms of Japanese plants would be the hōzuki (Alkekengi officinarum var. franchetii). Most Japanese people aren’t aware of this association, though.

Incidentally, it’s a poisonous plant, so allergies aren’t really the issu...
