For reasons unclear, Akita Prefecture is considered as home to a herd of the most beautiful women in the country. May have tried to provide explanations, e.g. limited UV ray exposure due to little sunshine, abundance of natural hot springs, and low calorie diet, but none is overly convincing.
This is a famous 1978 picture of a woman named Yoko Shibata. She wed a businessman later in her life and spent most of her life in Los Angeles, California.

One interesting feature about this town of ama divers is the themed artwork found throughout the streets, often featuring characters from the TV series Ama-chan that aired back in 2013. FYI, Aki (on the right) is an ama diver wannabe, and Yui (on the left) is promoting the local railway and is the cool one.

The reason Miyako Island (宮古島) always needs the "Island" suffix is that there is a wholly unrelated Miyako City (宮古市) in the northeastern Iwate Prefcture. This one is also seaboard and is probably better known to Tokyoites than the Island due to its proximity.
The manga panel (Kochira Katsushikaku Kameari Koen-mae) is from 1979. They are supposed to be the same places but a lot has changed during the 45 years...
