The late Kirby appears at last

Late as in behind schedule, not dead. Though the way I play this game, yeah, also dead.

Thanks to David Morton for sponsoring this episode!

This week's video will also be running a little later than usual. I was in such a rush trying to cover the Super NES mini launch while also prepping for this weekend's two-day recording sessions that I forgot to take the mandatory photography of the game's packaging for this week's topic. I think I'm going to take this opportunity to move my standard video publish date to Wednesdays and aim for Mondays as the advance release date here, which will give me a little breathing room considering this ...

Super NES Works episode #722

Yeah, sorry, the numbering went a little out of sequence this week.

A slight delay on this week's video… or rather, videos

Hi everyone, life is weird and somehow my efforts to chronicle classic video games has intersected with the hottest release of 2017. Next week's Super NES Works video will consist of a review of the Super NES Classic Edition mini-console… and, if I can pull it off in time, I'll also be posting a separate Star Fox 2 review as well. Since neither of these are actually out for sale until next Friday, I have to abide by Nintendo's review embargo guidelines, which fall after my us...

Super NES Works: Drakkhen

Sorry this one's later than usual. It turns out dealing with the final details of sending two books to an actual printing press at once is very time-consuming and difficult! I haven't had a lick of free time in ages and I am very glad to have the books off my plate — hopefully they'll pass preflight with flying colors.

Also, this upload was delayed further… right as I finished rendering the video, my cousin-in-law came over to visit my wife. She brought her elementary-age son, whose ...

Book #2! NES Works 1985 (plus 1986 revised)

Hello all, as promised, here is the second book release for 2017 in PDF form: NES Works 1985. I will be submitting both this and 1986 to Fangamer for publication as soon as I get the final printer specs, and turnaround time on offset printing is about two months. In other words, those of you who support at the physical book level can expect to re...

Game Boy Works #093: Balloon Kid

Boy, I wish games like this came along more often on Game Boy Works.

If you've never played Balloon Kid, I suspect this video will inspire you to snag it as a Virtual Console download.

Also, big thanks to the person who donated Balloon Kid to the Game Boy Works cause two years ago at a meet-up following Portland Retro Gaming Expo. I apologize for forgetting their name — it was all kind of a blur….

Kirby's Dream Course Gintendo stream today!

Thanks to those of you who joined the other day for the Metroid II mapping stream (archive embedded above). I'm not 100% sure what the future holds for my Metroid II efforts, since the game is super repetitive and its layout doesn't make complete spatial sense… I'll map it, but maybe not on stream. I don't think it makes for great television.

In the meantime, I don't want the mapping gimmick to be all I do. So this afternoon it's time for another Gintendo, the firs...

That's noon for y'all Pacific types.

I will be playing more of Metroid II, and mapping it. A good time is not necessarily guaranteed for all, but I'll do my darnedest.

Game Boy Works #092: Maru's Mission

Greetings, humans! Here is the latest Game Boy Works, which sees a fairly well-known Japan-only Famicom franchise arrive on Game Boy and in the U.S. for the first time. It is not the best ambassador for the series.

Other notes: I have a conference call sometime this week with Fangamer to finalize printing details on NES Works 1986. I hope to have NES Works 1985 completed within the next couple of weeks also. Book-tier backers and up can look forward to receiving both ne...

NES Works 1986 PDF

As promised, the first of 2017's book releases is here in PDF form. NES Works 1986 will be the first book published in partnership with Fangamer, and you can expect to receive your mailing in a few months if you're at that tier — I'll be submitting print files after PAX ends, and it takes a while for a proper press run of real books to come through. I've locked down all patron names as of today, though, so current book-tier folks are guaranteed to receive this and NES Works 1985 View Post

Bonus: Metroid map

Good morning! I have, I hope, a pleasant surprise for you: A medium-resolution version of the Metroid map I've put together based on my Cart-ography stream efforts. The PDF download attached to this post will allow you print this map in convincing resolution (240dpi) at 11x17", making for a tiny poster.

I'll be posting maps for you as I create them (I'm aiming for one a month). My aim is to produce all of these maps as proper posters (2x3' or larger), and book-level patrons will...

Super NES Works: Final Fight

Capcom arrives half-heartedly on Super NES with a deeply flawed conversion of arcade smash Final Fight. Missing stages, characters, and play options, this 16-bit debut looked nice in magazines, but didn't play nearly as impressively as Nintendo's own releases.

New reward tier: The Cart-ographers guild

Hey everyone, I mentioned this on Twitter, but I have added a new tier for supporters: The $50/mo. Cart-ographers Guild. This tier allows you to pick a topic for a Cart-ography stream series (which, if you haven't been watching, is a series in which I play an old game and map it in real-time, with both the game and the map paper on camera). Once I'm done, you'll receive the completed,...

Gradius again!? Yeah, it's Super NES Works #005

Good morning. I'm currently in a cab out to Garden City, NY where I'm going to meet up with Bob to present a panel on the history of Dragon Slayer games... but first, we're going to be recording a full Retronauts episode on the history of Gradius with Kurt Kalata, who literally wrote the book ...

Book news!

Hello, all. You are supporting this video project at the "get a book PDF a couple of times per year" level or above, which means you've probably been wondering, "Where the heck are the books?" The last volume I published was Good Nintentions 1985 back in October, which has been nearly a year.

I apologize for the tardiness on this front. My reckless decision to leave behind a stable paycheck and make Retronauts my primary source of income (and to fold these video projects into Retronau...

Super NES Works returns with SimCity

Well, I guess technically it's Mode Seven that's returning, but like, whatever, man. (I included a preamble to definitively answer the "why change name??" question. Sorry if that's all known info to you cool patron types.)

With NES Works 1986 complete (expect news on the book version of that within a matter of days), my attention will be focused primarily on Super NES until I work through the entirety of the 1991 catalog and get that book together as well.

Anyway,...

Game Boy Works #090: Lunar Lander

Wow, episode 90. Those numbers are getting bigger, huh? I mean yeah if I were doing this series weekly we'd be at like 160 now, but still.

Game Boy Works is still in a holding pattern while I try to get my hands on the original box to Fish Dude, which is about five GBW episodes away... but I did want to throw together a quick episode before heading back to the Super NES library. I say "quick," but this is 10 minutes (despite it being about an obscure Game Boy import hardly anyon...

NES Works #035: Gradius

This is it! The end of NES Works 1986. And what a way to wrap the year.

It'll be a while before I delve into NES again — my top priority now is to wrap up the first year of Super NES retrospectives I started (gotta milk that Super NES Mini hype), then make some progress on Game Boy... and then there's a secret, self-contained project to tackle that should be interesting, hopefully.

Thank you for supporting this series through the second year of the NES's life. It's a been a little meag...

NES Works #034

We're very, very near the end of NES Works 1986 — which means not only will I be moving along to other platforms for the remainder of 2017 once we hit the final NES 1986 entry, it also means there'll be a new book out very soon. That is exciting news, at least to me, but nowhere near as exciting as the fact that I'm through the misery of 1986's bad third-party NES releases. Karate Champ was a rough one. But next week... that's the golden reward, baby. Thanks for sticking with me — a...

Let's try this again: COMMANDO

The NES's 1986 lineup is winding down with only two more games to go after this one. And, pleasantly, the quality seems to be ramping up as we advance toward the end of the year. Commando is the first third-party release I would deem genuinely worthwhile, and it goes a long way toward clearing those first two Capcom releases off the books...

NES Works #032: Ghosts ’N Goblins

Whew, sorry this one's kind of late. Adobe made a hash of the new version of Premiere, so my editing process was a disaster... AND I'm traveling for the holiday. So this episode really came down to the wire. But I guess it just wouldn't be Ghosts ’N Goblins without undue suffering, eh?

Game Boy Works #089: Boulder Dash

The latest Game Boy Works is here! I know I've been largely focusing on other platforms lately, which mainly has to do with me dawdling in the hopes that I'll somehow manage to get my hands on the box to Fish Dude before we reach that episode (which is REALLY near now)... but I did want to check in for a moment on the little system that's supposed to be the main event around here. Also, if we're being honest, the Ghosts ’N Goblins episode of NES Works is destroying me... unfortunately...

Or, more properly, MISS PEACH WORLD 1: SUPER L.A. COP. Be warned, this video is a bit on the NSFW side.

I don't normally delve into non-work-safe material unless it's germane to understanding the heritage or evolution of a totally benign-looking title (.e.g. Qix or Match-mania), but this was by request. So I apologize if you find tiny pixel nipples offended... but I assume we're all grown-ups here.
