Hey everyone! Some unfortunate news: my computer died a couple of days ago, as in "died forever." It's going to take me a little while to scrape together everything I need for a replacement, and I'm afraid that until I do I won't be able to produce any videos. I will, however, be writing lots of scripts. With luck, once I'm back up and running, I'll have enough material to move to a twice-weekly video schedule. Here's hoping, anyway!
Anyway, sorry for the impending lack of videos. I've managed ...

Yes, that's right, Game Boy World is back. Going forward, I intend to make GBW my primary weekly concern, since it seems to be the project people enjoy the most (and is the project most in need of development, since Game Boy's oddities are so poorly documented). Good Nintentions and such will happen when I can manage to create more than one video per week, which I'll try to do more frequently.
So, anyway, please extend a warm greeting to the return of Game Boy World. This episode features ...

For some reason, I was thinking Kung-Fu would be next in the Good Nintentions series when I put together the Excitebike video, but after getting about 2/3 of the way through the Kung-Fu script I realized I had gotten my sequence mixed up. So here's a script for a video that's still about a month away. Looks like I have my work cut out for me this weekend if I'm to have a video ready for you by Monday!
It's OK, though. It's probably going to be another month before I ca...

Hi, wow. I started digging into Excitebike and came up with a LOT more than I expected. Look forward to another gigantic episode in a few days... maybe early next week, since I'll be traveling this weekend for Mother's Day obligations and might not have access to decent Internet until I get back home. Anyway. Excitebike! The secret prequel to Super Mario Bros.!

Hello! Welcome to May. And thanks as always for another month of support for these mad projects of mine.
The latest fruit of my labor has arrived to kick off the new calendar page, in fact: A look at Stack-Up for NES. The second R.O.B. game, this one is even more poorly understood than Gyromite since it didn't come packed in with consoles and vanished from circulation pretty quickly. A complete copy of the game will currently run you about $400-500. The good news is that you ...

...Game Boy World 1990 Vol. 1. In PDF form, anyway.
I've output this one as two-page spreads rather than as single pages; the layouts look much nicer than way. But if for some reason you find this format unacceptable, I can output a single-page version.
As for print books: I'm waiting on some file tweaks to be approved, but I expect those to go through without any trouble. So I should begin ordering print editions for book-tier backers within the next few days. Once those ...

Yes, I skipped from 008 to 013. We'll mop up the stragglers soon. For now, please enjoy this very, very lengthy video about Gyromite, a game pretty much everyone hates.

For a game as terrible as this, I ended up having quite a lot to say. And without any ranty YouTuber screaming. Anyway, I'm hoping to have the Gyromite video ready for tomorrow! But it's very long so whoooo knoooooows

So there's nearly $1000 worth of setup involved in making this dumb video, not including the video camera, capture gear, modded NES, computer, etc. Ridiculous. I cheaped out a bit and sourced Japanese peripherals (you can see that the platforms surrounding R.O.B. are a pale cream color rather than grey — that's because they're meant to go with the Famicom Robot rather than NES R.O.B.). Even so, this was pretty much the white whale of Good Nintentions: Proper reference footage of a game no one ...

Well, I decided to skip ahead with Good Nintentions. The next episode should be Excitebike, but... since I put that Gyromite footage together, I figured I should make use of it sooner than later. So here we are with a script, which is the longest GN script so far. I didn't mean for it to happen that way! But you know, after playing Gyromite properly, I really enjoyed it. That's not so much the case with Stack-Up, though...

Ahh, I had the devil's own time trying to get this episode put together, so it's going up here barely any time before it goes live on YouTube. The important thing is that I managed to get it ready just in time for the 34th anniversary of the game in question! Because 34 is the big one. Probably.

One of the reasons I started up Good Nintentions was to have an excuse to put together ridiculous footage no one else would ever bother to create. Like high-definition feed of light gun games played on real hardware... and this, wherein I've combined high-quality footage of Gyromite with an inset of R.O.B. that's synced up to the video. Gyromite in an emulator is a very different experience than Gyromite played properly, and while this isn't some timeless classic everyone ne...

Well, I have good news and bad news. The good news is that converting
Game Boy World 1989 to the series' new, larger, less-cramped format went a lot more quickly than expected; in fact, I managed to start and complete it yesterday.
The bad news is that the larger format, contrary to my expectations, has resulted in a book that will list for 10% less than the original edition due to the fact that the contents went from 136 small, crowded pages down to 104 large, roo...

Hi everyone, just thought I'd check in. I've managed to maintain a pretty consistent video publishing schedule for the past few months, typically uploading new videos on Thursday to go live the following Tuesday, but obviously that didn't happen this week. Tax season and Midwest Gaming Classic bear some of the blame for that, but mostly I've just been grinding away to get Game Boy World 1990 Vol. 1 into print. As of this morning, I've uploaded the completed book for approval, and once the...

The next episode of Good Nintentions is going to require a lot of research from me (as Excitebike touches on both the Famicom Data Recorder and the Vs. remake), and with my travels to Midwest Gaming Classic over the weekend I obviously didn't have time to delve into those. So this week, a bit of a palette-cleanser: A new Metroidvania Chronicles episode focusing on Pitfall! This should (should) be a pretty easy episode to put together
In other news, I hope to have Game...

The latest video is here. This is... the longest GN yet. And somehow, that distinction belongs to a video about Clu Clu Land!? Well, you'll see.
I'll be in Milwaukee for Retronauts this weekend, which means I won't have time to put together a Good Nintentions episode for next week — but I'm determined to maintain my weekly video schedule, so I'll try to come up with something. If you happen to be at MGC, be sure to come see my panels! (I'll also be interviewing the dudes who found...

Hi everyone, I'm happy to announce that I completed the initial layout and text placement for Game Boy World 1990 Vol. 1 over the weekend. I still need to give the a second round of text revisions, extensions, and sidebars, followed by a proper copy edit... but all the images are placed and text has undergone initial adaptation from video to print. It's looking pretty fantastic, I have to say. So I'm sharing a short preview here of the book's first 17 pages, which includes one of the new ...

I wasn't sure I'd be able to get this in before the end of the month, but here were are with nearly an hour to spare. I'll let the episode description speak for itself:
There's not a lot to say about 1985's third and final NES light gun shooter, so after a brief look into Hogan's Alley this episode digs a bit into how the sausage is made — both in terms of how the NES Zapper worked, and what it takes to get the best possible footage of its games.
Thank you ...

Hello, team! Here's another Good Nintentions script — hopefully one that takes an angle you've never seen before. With this in the bag, I'm hoping to have one last video ready for you before the end of the month. Can I make it so? I guess we'll find out!

There's really not all that much to say about Hogan's Alley, which is why I saved the breakdown of how the Zapper works (and why it won't work on HDTVs) for this episode. Devious, eh?

Howdy, howdy, howdy. Here's the latest episode of Good Nintentions. Yep. It's about Golf. Indeed.
Work on the first Game Boy World 1990 book is coming along a whole lot faster than anticipated, by the way. Backers at the PDF level can almost certainly expect to have theirs in hand next month, and I might even have physical books in the mail by then as well. With a Good Nintentions book to follow a few months later, I'd expect.

Hello there to everyone who either will be receiving Game Boy World 1990 Vol. I through supporting this campaign or because you plan to pick up a copy down the road! I have a question for you. Namely, what format do you prefer for the book? I've received comments from a few people that they prefer larger books, so I'd like some feedback from you. Do you prefer:
1. The more compact size of Game Boy World 1989 (approx. 7x9") or
2. The larger size of Good Nintentions (8x10")?

Hi everyone,
Have you noticed that I seem to apologize a lot for how long videos have taken to post, usually followed by something about how said video was the most complex and involved production I've undertaken to date? Well, uh, here we go again.
Seriously, though, this episode concerns Duck Hunt, but the first half of its 14-plus-minute run time consists of a recap of historical and cultural factors that set the stage for the popularity of such an unassuming litt...

Quick update (ironically, given that this consumed my entire weekend): All game entries on gameboyworld.com now have photo galleries! Screenshots and manual scans are yet to come, but this means I can start laying out the book. This was a long and tedious process, but an important one.
Also, something weird I noticed: The Japanese game boxes always photograph better than the American ones. I don't know if it's the sma...

Work is officially underway on Game Boy World 1990 Vol. 1! I expect the next few weeks will involve a whole lot of photography, photo editing, scanning, rewriting, and paste-up. I decided to spoil myself a little and jump straight to the fun part though: Namely, layouts.
I've been champing at the bit to mock up the next book's cover, simply because my vision for this series is something I've been excited to see take shape since it began: Each Game Boy World book will have a d...
