Here's an interesting episode-to-be—a game you've probably never heard of. I certainly hadn't! Ayakashi no Shiro, an RPG by Seta. Despite the obsessiveness of RPG fans, and first-person dungeon crawler fans in particular, this role-playing adventure for Game Boy has vanished into obscurity. It seems pretty ripe for fan translation, but nope! It's a pretty cool game, but really difficult to play through if your Japanese literacy is as spotty as mine, so I'm selfishly hoping this episode will ra...

I have a ridiculous amount of Retronauts commitments to sort out by the end of the year (wish me luck), but I'm trying to squeeze in some video productions while I'm off of work (even if "off of work" is only in the most technical sense). Here's the first of my Game Boy World scripts: Heavyweight Championship Boxing.
This one was kind of tough, because I hate boxing, and wrapping my head around this game's mechanics, strengths, and flaws took a lot of effort. I gave it my best...

*Or holiday of your preference
Hi everyone, hope you're having a good holiday break. Here's a new video in the long-neglected Metroidvania Chronicles series as a Christmas Day treat.
I've been letting Metroidvania Chronicles grow a bit dusty because I've reached a point where I can't easily gather game footage myself for the titles in question. I've finally accepted the reality that I'm just going to have to build these videos on other people's footage, much as I hate to d...

I have two of the three components I need in order to get high-definition RGB-quality video capture of NES light gun and R.O.B. games—a pro-grade CRT monitor (which has RGB pass-through) and a video-out cable that features the specific connections between a modded NES and this monitor. I'm just waiting on the third component (a second RGB cable to connect the monitor to the upscaler) to arrive from the UK and I can put together the next few episodes of Good Nintentions. This is pretty exciting...

In case you didn't see the message last night (given the video's current view count I'd say that's pretty likely), a new Good Nintentions is up:

Also, all international books are now in the mail. It turns out international shipping has become REALLY expensive these days. Yow.

And here's another big one.
I probably won't be producing many more videos in 2015—I have 11 more Game Boy games to cover before hitting the end of June 1990, the cutoff point for the next Game Boy World book. I think I'm going to try and write up the next 11 scripts over the holidays, then bang out videos in rapid succession in the new year. Wish me luck!
In the meantime, please enjoy the most demanding and complex video production I've put together so far.

Phew, I'm not pumping these out as quickly as I expected. Lots of work and personal stuff to deal with, blah blah, you don't care. The important thing: Here's episode 55 of Game Boy World! It's another lengthy one, but the next few should be much more concise and therefore a lot easier (read: faster) to put together. So that's good.

It's been a busy week on the "side project" front, between Retronauts and RETRO Magazine, but I'm back, baby. I'm back. Here's the script for the next GBW video, which I will have up by the end of the week. Gotta get back on track so I can get cranking on the next book!

I continue to be surprised by how much I have to say about very old, very simple video games. Nothing changes with this one. Let's see how long I can keep this up...
Unfortunately, I will probably end up jumping around out of sequence with Good Nintentions videos—the next couple of games use light guns, and recording Zapper game (and R.O.B. game) footage requires a complicated custom cable that is still being assembled for me. Alas!

Well, I managed to get this one assembled before the end of November, so that's cool. At 24 minutes, this is the biggest GBW video by far.
I'm going to ease up on video production for a couple of weeks so I can get a bunch of scripts in the can while I'm indisposed for video projects — I'll be traveling for quite a while, and after that I'm taking some time off from work to wrap up outstanding Retronauts obligations, so I won't have a lot of time for GBW. I've also begun assembling...

I was hoping to have this video wrapped up by yesterday, but I only finished the script today... because it turned out to be much longer than any other episode I've put together to date. At nearly 3900 words, this episode is probably going to be about 19-20 minutes long. But deservedly so! Great game.
Now to record 20 minutes of narration and sort through 25GB of game footage.

Hi everyone, this morning I received an attempt at email extortion relating to the recent Patreon database leak. As patrons, this is not something you should need to worry about, as you won't have tendered critical information to Patreon like your social security number and tax documentation—only creators have to do that. Still, on the unlikely chance you do receive any sort of threat, blackmail, or extortion attempt relating to Patreon, please report it immediately to the FBI:

Wow, the timing on this episode worked out pretty well—a look back at NES Tennis that'll go live the same week that Nintendo's latest Tennis game debuts. We can see how far we've come... or, alternately, how far we haven't. Considering its age, Tennis is pretty good!

Well, this should have been up a while ago, but for some dumb reason I decided to make a really lengthy and in-depth video about a pretty lousy game based on an old cartoon, and it took me a lot longer to assemble than I expected. That's the Game Boy World difference!

And unfortunately I have a lot of family obligations going on this week that will impede video production. It's lame, I know. I'll try my best to get the Popeye video up by my self-imposed deadline of Friday, though.
On the plus side, I have 50+ pounds of Good Nintentions books that should be arriving by Thursday for me to prep and ship to those who are slated to receive them! The UPS guy is gonna hate me so hard.

Whew, I did it. I managed to get Snoopy's Magic Show posted today. And tomorrow you can go see the Peanuts movie as a palate cleanser.
(Yes, I skipped episode 51. That'll be next week; I wanted to time this episode with the movie.)

Hi everyone, I hope to have a new video up tonight. Here's the script! Yes, I'm skipping over an episode (#051, Popeye), because the next game on the list is based on Peanuts and there's a Peanuts movie out tomorrow. Synergy, yo.
Popeye will hit next week. Don't worry, it's a mediocre action/puzzler, too. You're not missing much.

Well. I had really hoped to have this up yesterday to close out the month of October, but I spent a lot of time fussing over the particulars of this new video series... and then there were annoying video rendering issues resulting from my computer's latest OS update that I had to squash, which ended up wasting several hours of my weekend. Good times, good times.
But, anyway, it's here: The first episode of Good Nintentions. I've been planning this project for, oh, about a year now, so it's...

And I'm on the hook to get back on a weekly schedule now, since I've begun including public dates for the next episode at the end of the videos.
So! It's always a little tough to get back into the groove of video editing when I encounter a major schedule disruption, but we are GO once more. Game Boy World hits milestone episode 50 with a look at a puzzle game that is, shockingly, NOT boring and stupid. Daedalian Opus may have a clunky name, but the game itself is anything but! Enjoy! Howdy, backers! Here's a quick update for you on upcoming projects, before things go totally bonkers for me.
I was hoping to kick off the Good Nintentions video series this weekend — you know, to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the NES — but a few things have come up. The most significant is that I don't have all the equipment I need yet. Specifically, I need a special splitter cable that'll allow me to output video to an RGB-21 lead for HD capture and also SD analo...
