Hi all, I just wanted to drop a quick note of thanks to everyone for their patience during a period of personal upheaval that's gone on longer than anticipated. It's been difficult for me to work on my side projects this past month due to the temporary circumstances I find myself in, and I apologize for how little I've been able to produce for Game Boy World/Metroidvania/Anatomy of Games over these past few weeks. The good news is that my life will be settling down next week, and once I'm set up...

The alternate angle text for Boomer's Adventure in Asmik World is now live at gameboyworld.com. Hoorah!
The first backer bonus video is written, audio is recorded and edited, and the video component should come together over the weekend.
Also, for laffs, I'll be uploading bits of archival content for you folks to enjoy while I soldier through my current homeless phase — a few more weeks, it looks like. I've attached the first-ever self-published project I ever put together here, dating from ...

Hi everyone, welcome to another month here on Starship Earth. This month, we're polishing off outstanding Game Boy World items, starting with the last few text entries to accompany the videos from December 1989. Video-tier backers can expect their exclusive video by the end of the week, too. By the end of the month, there will be more video updates for Metroidvania and Anatomy of Games, and the mini-zine I've been working on for the past couple of weeks.
As always, I can't express my appreciati...

Hi everyone, they say variety is the spice of life, and I'll be adjusting the mix of seasonings soon. I'm about a third of the way through The Anatomy of Final Fantasy VI, which makes this a good point for putting it on hiatus for a while to switch things up a bit. We'll return to FFVI before too long, but in the meanwhile let's enjoy a refreshing video game sorbet together.

Huzzah! A new update for Anatomy of Final Fantasy VI!
I'll be posting one new chapter of this series in the coming week, after which we're going to take a break from FFVI — too much of writing about a single game leads to stagnation, and already this series is nearly as long as the breakdowns of Super Mario Bros. or Super Metroid. Yow!
Of course, I'll finish up FFVI eventually, but I think we could all use a sorbet, eh?

Sorry about the radio silence this past week. Moving is brutal! But I've been plugging away quietly at this latest look at one of Final Fantasy VI's most interesting sequences as I've had time, and here it is: A continuation of the game analysis. As often happens, writing critically about this portion of the game has given me newfound appreciation for how smartly crafted it was. And as often happens, it makes me wish more game designers would try to do more with less. FFVI's narrative doesn't al...

Hello generous and beloved Patreon supporters,
I'm going to be spending the next 48 hours boxing up my (and my wife's) possessions, shutting down utilities, and relocating to our temporary housing while we wait to take possession of our new home (in about five or six). We'll be living out of a suitcase in cramped quarters for a while, but I'm bringing along my recording gear nevertheless with the intention of continuing to produce content for everyone as I'm able.
On the docket in the short te...

...the end of 1989, I mean. The 25th and final Game Boy World episode for 1989 is now live. I tried to make it an interesting one. Maybe more interesting than this particular game actually deserves, but I figured I should make an effort even if TOSE didn't.
We're not completely done with 1989 yet, though. Stay tuned!

Hi all — I'm currently in the process of moving, and that means I'm going to have limited access to video and audio equipment for the next six weeks. But I'm determined not to let my output here slow down despite this! So please enjoy this retrospective on Battleship — as with all Game Boy World entries, the written retrospective is different (and comes at the game in question from a different angle) than the video.
I'm also having trouble getting a hold of the last couple of items I need ...

Whew, this one took a lot longer than I expected. The Sword of Hope is a fairly large and dense game for a Game Boy release of this vintage, and this particular video ended up being possibly the most intricate Game Boy World episode to date. Hopefully the end results were worth the wait! Turns out The Sword of Hope is a pretty neat little RPG — no masterpiece or anything, but decent (and distinctive) all the same. This is the sort of obscurity Game Boy World exists to bring to light, really.

Hi everyone, the holiday break is nearly over, and I'm getting a head start on real life with another Anatomy of Games post about Final Fantasy VI.
In other news, the database for ultra-64.com is now complete! I've also been working hard to finish up the Game Boy World database — about 450 games left until Game Boy and GBC are done, which means it's about 3/4 complete — and work continues apace on the Game Boy World book.
The book actually is my main project for this month: I have two mor...

I've chased away all the pesky "family" that kept hanging around during the holidays and finally had time to put together a new Anatomy video. I'm still sort of figuring this series out — I want it to have a different feel than Game Boy World — so I apologize that its "voice" isn't quite locked down yet. I probably should have started with a simpler game!
Anyway: Please enjoy.
Also, happy new year!

Hi everyone, I wanted to post a quick note here at the end of all things (well, all things related to 2014) to express my immense gratitude for your backing here on Patreon over the past few months. Whether you've been signed up since the start or just jumped in yesterday, I can't express how much your support means to me. It's not really the money — that's mainly just helped me offset my terrible habit of getting overly enthusiastic about side ventures and sinking tons of money I can't afford...

Hello! I hope you will enjoy this, the latest entry in The Anatomy of Final Fantasy VI. I continue to be surprised by how much there is to say about the design of this game.
Anyway, I intend to have another FFVI anatomy video up by the end of the year as well, so please look forward to that.

Hey everyone, hope your holiday is rad. I know it's been a little quiet on the Anatomy of Games/Game Boy World front, but that's all for a good reason: I'm deeply immersed in the production and layout of the next Patreon supporter book, a Game Boy World compilation. It's looking pretty amazing, and I don't even have photos inserted! The plan is to have the PDF version ready by the end of January, provided I can source a couple of the hard-to-find Japanese games I'm still looking for. (If anyone ...

Good news — I've finally recovered from my death funk sufficiently to record all the video scripts that have piling up. And just in time, too, since I'm about to leave town for a couple of weeks. I can take my projects on the road with me.
In the meantime, as we near the end of Game Boy World's first year of games, I'm planning to expand my game indexing/video history project beyond just Game Boy one GBW 1989 wraps up. I love Game Boy, but I have to admit that focusing on such limited and oft...

Hi everyone, here's another chapter of Anatomy of Final Fantasy VI. Sorry it's been a bit quiet on my end — I've been dealing with the flu for the past week, and it has not done good things for my productivity. I am stocking up a bunch of scripts, though! I just can't record them at the moment because I sound terrible. But once I no longer feel like death, it'll be back to biz as usual.

After about... um, 18 months? I've finally posted the first article to Metroidvania.com — a piece to accompany last week's Zork video. This is it. This is what I've been working toward for so long. Hmm... that makes it sound like it should be a lot more impressive than just a short retrospective on an old video. Well, anyway, thank you once again for your support. You've directly helped to make this possible, and I'm deeply grateful.

Hi everyone — after tons of delays, the Metroidvania Chronicles have kicked off with the first proper video. I've been struggling with this one for ages — it's REALLY difficult to make an interesting video about a text adventure. I'm not sure I was 100% successful, but now that I've made it over this painful speed bump, future videos should fall into place far more quickly. Please look forward to them.
And thanks again for your support this month. You are a good person. Look at yourself in ...

One of the things I really hope to accomplish with Game Boy World is not just to explore the system's history and the story behind its games, but also to create a permanent resource/repository for Game Boy-related material. I finally was able to kick off a key component of that tonight with a new YouTube playlist I'm calling "Game Boy World Raw Feed," which is simply a dumping ground for high-quality gameplay footage of the games I'm covering. I'm re-recording video for the earliest games in the...
