Secret Documents #29: Ka-50 Black Shark Guide Cockpit Description

Hi Folks!

With the new Ka-50 cockpit, I thought it was time to give the Black Shark guide a little coat of fresh paint. We will start with the cockpit. I've expanded a few descriptions and intend to add a bit more meat to the bone.

Secret Documents #28: P-47D Thunderbolt Guide Intro & Controls

 Hi Folks!

Before the guide goes live on July 7, I thought I'd share the bit I always keep for last, which is the introduction. I share some personal feelings about the plane itself and what I've learned about the plane while writing about it. At some point, you can't help but become attached to this rugged plane.

Secret Documents #27: P-47D Thunderbolt Guide Radio, Navigation & Air Combat

 Hi Folks!

The P-47's radio and navigation systems will sound very familiar if you have already flown the Mustang. Additionally, I wanted to include a few slides on how the P-47 was employed since it's an aircraft that has many strengths and weaknesses.

Secret Documents #25: P-47D Thunderbolt Guide Aerodynamics & Limitations

Hi Folks!

Flying the Thunderbolt isn't as easy as meets the eye. While it had a superb acceleration in a dive due to its heavy nose and powerful engine, the P-47 was with the P-38 one of the first aircraft to experience the deadly compressibility effects. Eagle Dynamics has brought back to life a temperamental, dangerous and very interesting aircraft through its intricate flight model. Let us explore these quirks together.

Secret Documents #24: P-47D Thunderbolt Guide Engine & Fuel Management

Hi Folks!

The P-47's engine is equipped with a turbosupercharger, which is often misunderstood or explained in a confusing manner. I spent a good amount of time researching the what and the why and I hope to provide accurate yet accessible explanations on how to get the most ouf of the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine.

Secret Documents #23: P-47D Thunderbolt Guide Takeoff & Landing

 Hi Folks!

Takeoff and landing in the Jug is slightly different than with other planes of the era. The landing gear is wide and stable, which makes taxiing and taking off easier than with the  narrow landing gear configurations of the Spitfire and Bf109. Landing, on the other hand, requires some careful throttle management. After all, you are landing an eight-ton (when fully loaded) plane. Cut the throttle too quickly and you will rapidly sink to the ground. Too much power and...

Secret Documents #21: P-47D Thunderbolt Guide Cockpit

Hi Folks!

To the Hornet fans, please accept my most sincere apologies... but the P-47 Thunderbolt just has a special place in my heart that no fighter jet will ever be able to fill. The F/A-18C update is ongoing but it will have to wait for a bit.

Not only was the Thunderbolt one of the most iconic aircraft of WWII, but Eagle Dynamics' recreation of the plane literally brings it back from the dead. When 2020-06-17 10:01:01 +0000 UTC View Post

Secret Documents #18: F-14B Tomcat Guide NAVGRID

Hi Folks!

Ever wondered what that NAVGRID mumbo jumbo is all about? Don't worry, it's not that complicated! Before the era of GPS and fancy toys, carrier groups needed to find a way to play Battleship but on a much bigger and costlier scale. The NAVGRID system is a circular grid that is defined by a reference point YY (think of it as a modern Bullseye, which is a fictional reference point), a Threat Axis (bisector of the grid), a coverage angle and a number of sectors. This way, you can...

Secret Documents #17: F-14B Tomcat Guide TWS Auto

Hi Folks!

The first iteration of the Viper guide may be released, but the work doesn't stop there. This week, I'm giving the Tomcat some much needed love. I have reworked some of the radar sections and air-to-air armament sections to include symbology cues on the VDI. I have also expanded the TID HAFU symbology description. This document shows some improvements I have done on the Track While Scan section. A NAVGRID section will soon follow.

The Way of the Future

Hi everyone!

Just thought I'd let you guys know on what are the next steps forward. The next months will likely be spent on five things (in no particular order):

  • Hornet: bring it up to date once the air-to-ground radar is implemented. As a nice to have, I would also want to include a few notes on the Supercarrier.
  • Comms: a brand new guide on how to communicate online. This document's structure is still being worked on, but ove...

Results are out! I combined the results from the Patreon poll with the Hoggit SurveyMonkey poll in order to have a more representative picture.

Comms and Hornet update appear to be clear favorites. I also received a surprisingly high number of requests for a Falcon BMS Dynamic Campaign guide via private messages.

Good news, everyone!

The first iteration of the F-16C guide is nearing completion and will be released next Monday on May 11, 2020. It's about 475 pages long and is probably the longest project I've undertaken yet for a DCS guide.

I'm spending some extra time on polishing, proofreading and creating proper bookmarks (this needs to be done by hand).

Secret Documents #12: F-16C Viper Guide Datalink & IFF
