A Shiftgate stood wide open, far above me. Through it, the Battlespire. Hovering in the sky, buzzing as it ripped magicka out of the air, feeding it through itself, through Shadowrend, and through me. I focused, pulling the battlespire through, spells being woven not just with my own hands, but with Shadowrend’s. Enchantments, conditional alteration magic. Even Tharn’s worldweaving, as limited as it would be this close to a land that wasn’t mine.

Shadowrend-as-Akulakhan screeched, too-long arms with too many elbows stretching from my manifested shadow. The hist’s spells- cast by the dozen, every moment, ripped away at the flesh of my right arm- as I continued to push down with inexorable purpose. I could feel branches and roots cracking, even as the amber energy reinforced the ancient thing.

Magic raged around me, the world’s magicka focusing. It coiled itself into amorphous bands, coiling roots and vines made of congealed amber energy. Pulling me still, holding me in place. Histmagic.

“I’ve come with shear and axe,” I said, my limbs locked into place. “Knives for carving and fire for burning.”

“Heretic.”

“I’ve come with curses on my lips and the shards of broken fate in my hands,” I said. “This is my declaration of war.”

It was just as I’d seen it before. The blackwood’s trees and rivers and marshes drifted underfoot as my levitation spell and wings carried me forward. I noted, with some amusement, that Fort Teleman had been taken over by Mannimarco’s anchorites- the flag of the Black Worm swaying in the wind, long-rotted corpses standing guard- maybe even the corpses of the bandits that had guarded me as I worked on the shrine of Hermaeus Mora in the basement.
