Chapter 41: Your first muder.

Cerion and I stared at the guild leader nervously. He was tapping his fingers against his desk, deep in thought. When we had returned to Reito, we had done as planned and inquired about getting a tier 3 quest. Doran hadn't been willing to help us out, so we had needed to go to the guild leader with our request after all.

He hadn't seemed enthused by the idea, but was at least willing to entertain it. Eventually, he spoke.

"We don't have any good tier 3 quests that I could send you...

Chapter 40: A month of quests.

"So, what do you think?"

I could only nod in response as I regarded my newly made suit of armour. It was coloured a dark grey, bordering on black, with white-coloured engravings adorning the metal. The suit was a full set of plate armour.

"It's beautiful."

"Damn right, it is!" the smith, Bertram, replied.

"This is one of my best works so far. Because the set didn't need to align with a certain affinity, I was able to focus on using materials that make it as sturdy as p...

Chapter 39: A Restaurant visit.

The next day, Cerion and I agreed to meet up to tour the city. He wanted to visit a restaurant that was opening up and I still had to pick up my newly made set of armour later today.

I spent a few hours training in the morning to pass the time, and we met up around noon at the entrance of the guild.

"Good morning! Wait, it's already noon. Good afternoon? No, it's not afternoon yet..."

"Just say 'good day' before you have an aneurism, Cerion."

"Ah, right! Good day, Arth...

Chapter 38: Being chastised.

I was starting to hate tiering up my skills. The idea of becoming more powerful was awesome, of course, but with every decision you made, you would abandon two more.

[Mental Fortress] would aid me in my defence from outside influences, which was impressive. Sadly, it didn't look like it would help me with my affinity in any way. Considering that my affinity was basically an ever-present insidious poison, I would need more help defending against it than against outside influences.

2 days of no chapters.

I'm getting a minor surgery tomorrow. As a result there won't be any chapters that day or the day after. Daily uploads will resume as normal on the seventeenth of June.

Sorry, guys.

Thanks for the support!

Chapter 37: Fighting above your tier.

The cyclone tore into the monster's eyes, causing it to shriek in a demonic fashion. Purple blood sprayed out from its wound as the water continued to devastate its face, digging deeper and deeper into its carapace.

I took advantage of the spider's temporarily stunned state to continue healing my wounds with dark form. My skill was making good progress and had already healed my broken bones, leaving just the muscle and fat that had to be repaired.

Revan ran over to me to see if I ...

Chapter 36: Getting overwhelmed.

After a few minutes, I recovered from my shock. It seemed these larger spiders had eaten far more humans than we had previously estimated. Either that, or they somehow did grow their skulls themselves.

Something was fishy about this whole situation. Tsuchigumo were an invasive species from the east, sure, but why had the quest not warned us about their ability to impersonate their victims? This whole quest felt like a trap, though it wasn't designed to deal with Cerion and me s...

Chapter 35: What a feat.

"Are you alright?" I asked Cerion.

He had the good humour to smile and joke around.

"Do I look alright? I'm covered in spider blood! Don't think I'll ever hire your sloppy workmanship again, peasant!"

From his tone, I could tell he wasn't being serious.

"My apologies, your highness. Next time your bug bath will be of a higher quality."

He actually shivered at the thought of drowning in those spiders from before.

"Ah, shut up about, Arthur. I don't even want...

Chapter 34: Ew, bug guts!

Cerion and I were inspecting the quest board. It had some abbreviated quest files pinned to it, though most weren't necessarily that interesting to us.

Quest: Exterminate the rats

Tier: 2

Danger level: Low

Recommended party size: 1

Location: Reito sewers

Suggested arrival time: Undetermined

Quest poster: Reito official of public health and safety

Abbreviated description: Kill 50 ...

Chapter 33: Going shopping with a literal child.

I took some time to think about the events that had occurred the day before, and realised that I would have to talk to my uncle in the capital to figure this whole thing out. I still had two more months to gain as many levels as possible before the tournament.

If I wanted to win, I needed as many as I could get.

Honestly, I had debated not using my affinity in the tournament for a while, but decided against it in the end. I could either undergo the while 'wait, you have a...

Chapter 32: Death of one enemy, birth of another.

With the Duke's support secured, I could now rest a little bit easier. A few more days had gone by, and the other hunters were getting anxious to return to their guard duty and quests. The spire wasn't exactly a homelike place and there wasn't much to do here but train either.

Still, an event that I had been looking forward to for quite some time was about to take place. We were seated around a small throne room in the centre of the spire. The Duke and Cerion were seated in the centre, ...

Chapter 31: The creation of a skill.

Another wave came in, slamming into my defences. I cut it apart as best I could, but a large part still got through my maelstrom. Unfortunately, my shield wasn't waterproof.

The part of the attack that got through tore into me and left some cuts on my face. My dark form healed a moment later, only for another attack to reach me and repeat the process.

Frustrated, I released my concentration on my shield and charged forward. I raised my sword and engaged in a duel with my opponent....

Chapter 30: The Coldwater palace.

A few hours later the thick foliage started to thin, the ground started drying up and the trees started becoming smaller again. We were through the worst of it, and were now leaving the swamp.

I heaved a sigh of relief. This meant that we had escaped the swamp monster successfully. Despite the fact that I had fought several tough battles before, none had managed to threaten my life apart from the ambush by those hired mercenaries, and now, the encounter with that beast.

I could he...

Chapter 29: An eye in the dark.

We had made quick progress over the past few days, since traveling on horseback was rather quick compared to traveling on foot. I thanked Helios that I'd never be forced to walk for three days straight again, with Revan now being big enough to carry me.

I hadn't interacted much with the people around me outside of Garrett's party and Doran. Doran had similarly stayed quiet throughout the trip so far, tough Garrett and the others seemed to know some of our accompanying hunters.

Chapter 28: Another departure.

The next day I went out to practice again. I had gotten a bit of success with my sword-extending training and cut a tree in half with a single swing. I had had to cover my sword with the overloaded mana and then let it loose as I swung. With the right timing and movement, I could extend my sword by a few meters in the form of dark mana, which gave me a good middle-ranged attack that I had desperately needed.

I was giddy today, though. The party would be returning to the guild after thei...

Chapter 27: Inherited trait.

The next day, I had gone through the same steps of the day before. Wake up, drop off Michael at the orphanage and then travel to my training spot outside of the city.

I had decided to finally summon Revan's tier 2 form. He was probably excited to show it off.

I found myself in the now torn-up training spot. The clearing used to be a small plain filled with grass, but now it was scarred with the after-effects of yesterday's spar. Today it would get even more destroyed. Luckily nobo...

Chapter 26: The folly of making bad jokes.

The appraiser had had to contact the office head, who was a tier 4 appraiser, to find out what the status of the sword was. He had rushed out of his office when he had found out what he was dealing with, which meant I wouldn't have to wait long to finally get answers. The head appraiser was a round-bellied man with a thin moustache. He marched into his subordinate's office to come to inspect the sword, not even introducing himself in the process. I didn't think he had done it out of a feeling...

Chapter 25: The mystery of the sword.

The incensed [Paladin] went on to make good on his promise and beat me black and blue for the next half an hour.

I had gotten some good practice in with my [Overload Aura] when I tried to block him, but ultimately it had fallen to my dark form to keep me in fighting shape as Doran's attacks practically ignored whatever improvised defence I managed to put up owing to their light elemental affinity.

I had wisely kept my [Overloaded orb] out of the rest of the battle because I hadn't...

Chapter 24: The bald patches of the [paladin].

The next morning, I woke up in my small room in the guild quarters. Michael was still sleeping in the extra bed the servants had delivered last night. I tiptoed to my day clothes and put them on, before quietly leaving the room. When I arrived at the mess hall, I found Doran already there, eating a hearty breakfast.

I ordered the same from the cooking staff and took a seat next to him.

"Hey there, Doran. Up already? You really don't break that habit, do you?"

He got a small ...
