Dead Island 2 is good, dumb fun. I'm having a good time playing through with a co-up buddy. But even if it's not your cup of tea, you really should check out the F.L.E.S.H. system they created for the game.

It's interesting from a technical standpoint, and entirely effective for a zombie game. It takes typical slaughtering of the undead, and elevates it to an impressively gruesome level. I've seen more of people's inside squishy bits than most med students.

My friends and I have been playing Wartales since it launched out of early access earlier this month. I'm having a blast. It has all sorts of stuff I love. Co-op, turn-based tactics combat, RPG choices and character progression, exploration, tradeskills, and the kind of sandbox freedom that really shows you which direction someone's moral compass is pointing.

Want to survive by skinning and eating the corpses of the foes you fell? No problem.

Dark and Darker is a pretty fun medieval fantasy dungeon dive loot and extract game in rather early access. Think Tarkov, but with swords and wizards. I participated in the (free, they aren't selling the game yet) playtests and found it to be pretty fun, if a long ways from being finished.

I've become so numb to the hype words/descriptors that publishers use to try and sell/quantify their games. At this point it's just noise; words that have been blurred together and smoothed out, had all of their corners and meaning sanded away.

But for me there is still one word that manages to cut through the noise. That jumps off the screen when browsing Steam/trailers/reviews/whatever and grabs my attention every time. "Co-op." I'm always on the look out for a good game to play along...

I suppose it's better than the rainbow coalition of ponchos that passed for cosmetics in the first game, but the Jedi Survivor deluxe edition is an easy pass for me. I'm not even slightly tempted to cosplay as Han or Luke for $20. You want to charge $90 for a special edition of the game, you'd better make sure it's something my inner nerd can't ignore.

Monster Energy Drinks is suing some indie game developer because their game (Dark Deception: Monsters & Mortals) has "Monster" in the title (they went after Ubisoft some time back for a similar reason).

A friend of mine joked that Capcom had better watch out, but I found out today Monster already tried to file trademark claims against Monster Hunter (and Pokemon, and hundreds of others), but the Japanese told them to go fuck themselves.

Thinking About Shaking Things Up A Bit

So I have a lot of irons in the fire right now, and work has been keeping me silly busy, but in an excited "can't wait to release this stuff" sort of thing. I'm chugging away on Volume 2 of the Starcaster Chronicles, Analog and D-Pad and CAD 2.0 books. I've recently finished a tabletop card game I'm hoping to bring to Kickstarter in the very near future. I just wrapped up a handful of new shirt designs, my first new shirts in ages, that should be popping up pretty soon.

Diablo 4 ruled last weekend, but I did carve out a little bit of time to try Exoprimal's beta.

I won't say it's a perfect game, by any stretch; I had a lot of fun with it, but I have no doubt that the premise alone is doing a fair amount of the "enjoyment" heavy lifting. Something about blasting waves of velociraptors with various Anthem-style mech suits I can swap on the fly just... hits right.

With the sheer amount of dead trees containing gold, I figured it's either this or the squirrels have some explaining to do.

Spent a good amount of time with Diablo 4 this weekend, and I'm even more pumped for release now. Really enjoyed what I've seen so far. Hoping to see a bit more variety in dungeon objectives, since dungeons are supposedly a main pillar of the endgame, but the combat felt meaty, and the skill customization was great.
