I got the feel of my new mech as we made it out of the cave and past the village. There was an old road carved through the forest that we would take. I helped around as much as I could during the next two days as we prepared for the offensive. Lumpy, Fazzlemore, and Fitzfazzle questioned me about Earth, and at the same time, answered questions I had about this place. The world was called Veriman and was just like what I expected a fantasy world to be. Many of the creatures, various humanoids, and even the way magic worked mimicked what films, books, movies, and games had predicted.

Chapter 55. War council.

“Rico, wake up, the war council is about to start. Are you hungry?” Lumpy asked. He’d sort of taken me under his wing and helped get me sorted, for which I was grateful.

Back inside the cave, I was given a more thorough tour. There was almost a whole city in here. The gnomes had a small mining operation going on, along with smiths to make whatever they might need. Lumpy said that the village exported a lot of finished goods to several other villages nearby.

Chapter 52. Last stand.

Gripping the pitchfork was painful with the burns on my hand. I wasn’t sure what spell that necromancer had cast, but I could see it being a very useful one. What if I had been wearing plate armor or chainmail and had that spell cast on it? I’d be cooked. Just my hand was cooked now, but I’d still be the main course if too many ghouls were able to climb up here with me.

Chapter 51. Barn buster. 

Ghouls clawed and hissed at the door, but the barn was built much sturdier than I had expected. It was likely the reason the barn door had held up under the zombie assault when the house did not. The ghoul claws were horrible things and through the gaps in the exterior boards, I could see that each swipe a ghoul made tore strips of wood from the door.

Chapter 49. Mech vs. monster. 

“Hey, get out of there and head to the cave!” I shouted to the gnomes inside the barn as I moved the mech forward to place it between them and the giant zombie.

The zombie crashed through the last of the house debris and stomped toward me. As fast as I could, I began triggering magic missiles. The missiles flew from the tubes and slammed into the giant, each shot tearing gouts of rotten flesh from the monster. I backed the mech slowly away...

My mech lurched forward as I adjusted the throttle dial, silently cursing the gnome that placed it in such an awkward position. Rotating the torso toward the entrance to the cave, I tried to maneuver around the gnomes that were running around underneath me. Some of the gnomes were armed and in armor, charging toward the threat, while a stream of non-combatants flowed in the opposite direction, heading deeper into the cave.

I broke into a run to see what the pawn shop clerk would do. He didn’t appear to be the most athletic type, and my proved true when he barely managed to trot for about twenty yards before stopping. Turning the corner, I ditched the guy and looked for the nearest bus stop. It must have been the coins. One or both of the groups after me must have hit up every pawn shop in LA, offering big cash for anyone trying to trade in those coins.

I appeared back on the bus, and to my great delight, I was fully clothed! The rift travel containment field had worked as advertised. Even better, my wallet, phone and keys were still in my pocket.
