Hey everyone. It's been a minute...and a half. Hope all of you are having a somewhat good/ great start to the year. First and foremost, I want to dish out an apology for being such a shitty Patreon host. My girlfriend, Janice, had to give me a well deserved lecture on why I need to take this more seriously. So, I'm going to begin by sharing with you all my 2019 year.
Early last year - around February - I got my first taste of packing books. It was a great f...

I often get asked where I get ideas for my images. Most of the time, it's from movies or shows I admire. In this tutorial I will show you the process I use to plan, create and finalize a scene for a comic. This is not a scene from Kings of Nowhere: Vol 1, but it is definitely a scene in which I could see them in.

Hey guys. I'm sorry I haven't posted the newest lesson yet. I went deep into this one. I will be posting it tomorrow as I'm just about to wrap it up. It's 1am here and I should be getting to bed. My bad for making you guys wait. Here's a teaser for what's in store!

In preparation for my next book, which will be drawn traditionally, I have been putting forth extra time in the day to strengthen my inking skills. My style changes depending on the medium I use. The reason I didn't go with ink for the first book was because I felt like I wasn't too good at it, and that I was much better using a pencil since that's what I had become accustomed to. I opted to use an iPad because of its HB pencil brush tool and became a mostly digital artist. I want that to change...

As a comic book artist, my main goal is to have my audience feel like they're watching a movie, or a show when they look at my work. I try to keep that same feeling even when I work on a stand alone piece. I want people to see an art piece and say "I'd love to see this as an anime or a movie!" When I was asked by @celestine.art to critique his work, I took it as a chance to use it as an example for a lesson I had in mind.

INTRODUCTION
Crosshatching is a useful technique used to add depth and shadows to a form. Its mainly used in manga and comics but can be used for just about any illustration.

Takehiko Inoue, the artist behind the best selling manga 'Vagabond' specializes in using the crosshatching method. It's a useful technique especially in manga as there is not going to be any colour ov...

The legs are the biggest mass of muscles on your body. Before you begin studying the anatomy, take time to just draw some legs and see where your understanding of their anatomy is before you dive deeper. Use the...

This is a live stream from earlier today. I apologize for the horrible quality. As soon as I reach my first goal here on Patreon, I will look for much better filming equipment (camera and audio) so you guys can view my work in high definition. I hope this will suffice for now, plus I answer some questions some of you might have, and you also get to hear some of Janice's (@janicesung) views on certain topics artists come across. If you guys have any questions, let me know in the ...

When beginning to learn anything new, one must first figure out how the form would look simplified before moving in to add details. The human torso, or core, can be broken into 3 segments from the front. You have the chest region, then underneath is the abs and obliques, and then finally there is the groin. The chest is made of the pectoralis major and pectoralis minor 2018-10-20 18:20:29 +0000 UTC View Post
I've lately hit a conundrum. I really enjoy doing my comic digitally, but lately due to Inktober and me just messing around with ink, I've started to fall for the feeling of traditional once more. I know this is a huge leap, but I plan to do the next book all in ink. There is a feeling that I just can't replicate from my ipad, no matter how good procreate is. What is art if not the feeling it gives you, right? Sure you can create a visual spectacle with little to no trouble digitally, but the fe...

The best way to begin drawing a complex form like the arm is learning to simplify it to it's most basic shapes. The shoulder is a round triangle, the upper arm is a simpler cylindrical form, the forearms are cone shaped, and the hands can be simplified to look like mittens. Once...

Something many artists, including myself struggle with is being able to draw fabric without having to guess and make up where folds might or might not appear. What I tend to do is study a specific pose like how you see in the example above, and I repeat it until I feel more comfortable drawing it. The reason I did this demo was because I drew a character with their legs outstretched and I was not happy with how the folds were done, so I spent around an hour and a half just repeating it over and ...

I used to always create scenes where a character can traverse through. It's fun imagining a route for them to travel through. It also makes posing characters easier. I wanna do this more.

Yay! Part 2! For this segment, I wanted to show the importance of using simple shapes in building complex characters. For the first character (let's call him Big Bruce), I wanted to make a big, bad, bodyguard kinda fella. Big Bruce is an army veteran. He saw some dark shit, and kept his mouth shut about it. He's lived life working under bad people, and all he knows is that bad people pay well. Big Bruce is the guy you go through to get the mastermind villain. For his face, we gave him a large...

I was commissioned to draw two characters based on certain qualities and traits. I had some fun figuring them out. I'd like to know, what kind of a person do you think the girl and guy are? Happy-go-lucky? Spiteful? Slacker? What's their names? How old are they? It's fun to just guess who someone is based off your initial impression.

Merry Christmas! I wanted to give you guys something that helped me when it came to making comics... learning how to draw heads and faces! This is the first part to many, where I'll go into detail on the process of building characters. I personally struggled with drawing faces that didn't all look the exact same. To change that, I learned to use simple shapes and markers, such as triangles for the nose, dots for the eyes, and lines for the eyebrows. This way by just placing t...

Hey guys, recently I reorganized my pricing for the previous posts, changing "Reginald's" to "Basilisk's". I realised I promised you all tutorials and I wasn't providing it. I will be posting more pages from my comic because that is what this patreon is about. I am also working on my first proper tutorial on facial design and anatomy for developing characters. Thanks for your support guys. I will make sure to not disappoint!

These are just but a very few of the characters from Kings of Nowhere. Every so often I gotta spend several hours just drawing them out over and over so I don't forget how they look.

Trunks was always a favourite character of mine on Dragonball Z. For this piece, I really wanted to grab his ready to fight attitude. With the rough, I tried to capture the liveliness of his pose, his pissed off glance, and the accuracy of the folds in his clothes.

With digital pencil lines, I try my hardest to be extra sensitive with the thickness of the lines. Less pressure equals ...

This piece was done as a commission for @eyelovebrandon. He was looking for a Satoshi Kon Opus inspired piece. He wanted random elements in there to help fortify the chaotic atmosphere. I wanted to do something similar but with my own take. I went with him centered in the middle, surrounded by animals and people that would kind of act as his posse, as if he has his own show or manga, ...

These are early passes at creating the Moreno family. Bili Moreno, Toni Moreno, and Annabelle Torres. I try to play with as many emotions as I can just so I get a better feel of the character and whether I like how they look after the 5th time drawing them. It's crucial to enjoy the features of that specific character, because in the process of creating a comic, you will be connecting to them more than you could have ever imagined. It's best to not get bored of them, so play around with it as...
