Poetry Challenge - March 26, 2020

Hello Beastlings,

Here is my offering for today.

I was inspired by Robert Frost and then decided to put a loose spin on a Petrarchan sonnet to start introducing structure into my writing.

When writing songs, the structure is important - you have to cooperate with your intended verse/chorus/bridge/etc arrangements when composing your lyrics. I have lots of Arch Enemy songs (Time is Black, for example) where I had to painfully cut away chunks of lyrics b...

Poetry Challenge - March 22, 2020

Here's a poem I wrote just now, after my jog... which I think I'm still "allowed" to do as long as I keep a distance from passers-by (it feels insane to write this).

I didn't pay much attention to cadence or rhythm here and instead focused on a single, meaningless moment of stepping on a twig. As I wrote, I felt that it was an important reminder that even startling, loud, violent moments can sometimes be more benign than we think. We shouldn't give anything more power than it deserves....

Today I wrote more like a stream of consciousness - less of an intentional piece. Again, it doesn’t matter if it’s good or not. I created it and it exists now forever.

Poetry / Automatic Writing Challenge!

Guys - this is an extremely tough time for all of us. I have not been coping with it well, to be honest. But let's not talk about that.

I was thinking: maybe we can ALL do something connected. Every day. Maybe we can all write poetry - 1 piece per day or more. Whatever style you want. Long or short. Doesn't matter.

Hi everyone!

First of all, I hope everyone is doing okay despite what is happening globally at the moment. It is a VERY scary time for everyone. The health risks are one thing but the absolute collapse of entire industries is terrifying. I know you have seen all the tour cancellations going on - there is nothing anyone can do about this and we are all basically in shock.

I found an old photocopy flyer for a show of mine from 2005!

Weird physiological reaction to stress!

This is a purely anecdotal, personal post and has nothing to do with art.... but remember a few months ago when my EARS started ACTUALLY burning before one of my concerts and my body was instantly covered in hives?

Well, it happens a lot now! So I think it is a weird reaction to high-stress moments. Only started happening recently! Also sometimes accompanied by dizziness. I think it's just how my body is deciding to handle stress these days. Weird right?

Behind the Scenes: Stage Outfits

Here's a little view of what is usually staring me in the face leading up to most tours. This is where I create or add the finishing touches to my stage outfits for each tour. I spend a LOT of hours here.

It's also where I fix Doyle's clothes and as you can see, sometimes write or work on lyrics (those Avalanche lyrics are the actual pencil-on-paper sketches that ended up in the album booklet).

Is it weird that I REMEMBER doing this? As we've discussed, memory is a fickle friend and it is very possible I am just forming what my brain is recognizing as a long-term memory from the simple act of viewing my younger self in this clip. I feel like I really remember these moments though!

My sister uncovered a TREASURE TROVE of old home movies. I'm so thankful that my dad was inventive and encouraged our creativity with musical instruments and audio/video tools, even at this super young age (and he still does today)!
