FHC Chapter 8: Town Under Construction

As we exited the tunnels and entered the room with the giant stone doors, I waved in surprise.

“Kierra?” I asked.

“Alice invited me along,” she answered.

“Adeline giving you a break?”

“I don’t train twenty-four seven, you know,” she chuckled. “And she canceled today. Said something came up.”

Can’t relate.

“Cool, welcome aboard.”

She smiled and cocked her head as she looked at Alice. “Is that axe different? I ...

B4 Chapter 15: After the Escape

As we continued to plummet I turned and looked back at the castle. The red-faced man was screaming behind us before his face became too small to make out.

"What happened?" I screamed through the howling wind.

"A successful mission!" Anastasia roared.

Nathan flexed his mana and the wave sloped, carrying the bathtub across the sky and over the many roofs of tall buildings.

We even passed a tower-like restaurant that held many wide-eyed patrons. A woman screamed, and a fe...

FHC B3 Chapter 7: Quick Sidetrip

The wind calls, it knows.

Carries the scent, awakens forgotten instincts.

The moon forgets its place, the sun weeps

I snarl and howl, welcome the hunt.

I sat up and rubbed my nose. This time, the dream was short, and I could barely remember what it was about. But the smell of blood lingered until it faded, and I took in the muted sky inside the forest room. The pavilion blocked out the sunlight, but it was bright enough...

B4 Chapter 14: What To Choose?

"I have a few questions," I said.

Allaron motioned to Hubold who stepped forward. "Yes, sir?"

I pointed to the list. "Some of these are written in different ink, and a lot of the summaries are varied."

"The items were archived in different eras of Solunaria's history. It was only after the fifth king that the vaults were itemized and organized accordingly."

Made sense. But some of the skillstones were too weird.

"What about this one? I understand different styles...

B4 Chapter 13: Royal Treasury

This time, I appeared in a room made entirely of black marble. The mana in the enchantments embedded into the walls was strong almost-ether like in quality.

Hubold stood up and approached the east wall. He placed his hand along a hidden indent that contained several packets of runes interlocked together. His mana threaded through the link and the floor rumbled as the north wall slid apart.

The walls revealed a room filled with chests and cases displaying various items. But I waite...

B4 Chapter 12: Meeting the King

I stared into the mirror and examined my hair. It was getting too long for comfort so I had Erebus give it a trim.

He did a good job.

I slicked the front of my hair and smelled the wax as I ran it through the strands. A more earthy scent, it wasn't exactly something I was used to, but it was needed.

Being a felkin had benefits, which included having very little personal scent since I didn't sweat. But right now I needed to be what I wasn't.

With the hair maske...

I stopped at the gate and waited as the melodic chime played. It was comforting, and the door opened with Walter bowing at the threshold.

"Welcome back sir, the others are waiting for you inside the dining room," Walter greeted.

"Thank you, Walter. What are we having tonight?"

He exited his bow and his eyes glowed brilliant gold. "Pasta."

That wasn't ominous at all...

B4 Chapter 10: Dark Thoughts, Bad Memories

"Come in," Syrreisha chimed.

The room was enchanted, and her voice would inform the person by the door to enter.

Sitting behind the curtain that served as a visual and audible barrier I watched as Syrreisha clasped her hands and waited for the burly man to shut the door. Once he did, more enchantments came to life.

He grunted and dipped his head. The long braided beard reached his chest and poofed up but he didn't react.

"How are you doing, Loregg?"

Loregg was a ...

B4 Chapter 9: No Need

Isaac snarled as he stared at the wall.

Surprisingly, seeing his anger elicited the opposite reaction in me. Now that I did the dirty work and was relaxing in a chair, the more I felt a headache come on.

I did my part, helped figure out where the boy was held, and that he was alive.

But I didn't feel content. A small part of me raged at the knowledge, while another wanted nothing more than to desperately take a nice hot bath.

"Isaac," I said, drawing the rogue's attent...

My eyes narrowed but I sneered at the wall as if thinking about the dishonor to my name.

"Those idiots should be punished, but I am pressed for time," I grumbled.

"Of course. I'm not one to speak bad about my competitors, but I am more than happy to see a customer come my way."

Alright, throw in the hook.

I turned and examined him, smiling but not too much. "Good. If you can provide me with equipment anywhere near the level that my friends own, I'll be more th...

I slid through the crowd and made my way into the market. It wasn't hard to retrace the path Sereza led me. I swerved around back to the hidden entrance and activated the enchantment.

Once the passage slid open, I stepped through.

"Sereza? That you?" Ernor called from upstairs.

I tossed back my hood and waited.

"Sereza? You can't come in and not announce yourself. That's ru-oh!" Ernor froze. "Cyrus?"

I nodded. "Sup. Sorry about sneaking in."

B4 Chapter 6: Long Shift

Two hours. Two hours of nonstop studying and testing with lots of shoving Galarion into strange glass tubes where she activated futuristic-looking gadgets to test shit out.

By the time the two hours were up he shook several of his curled tentacles and glared at the head healer.

He slipped behind my ears and dived into my skull, where he started devouring the memory she fed him as a reward.

I leaned back in the cloud chair and rolled around. Syrreisha watched me in amusement ...

B4 Chapter 5: Head of the Healers Guild

I was led down an underground tunnel, passing several door frames lined with enchantments. I recognized a few of the runes but not all.

Sixteen? That's a lot of silence runes.

Gloworbs lined the walls, and the robed woman in front would raise her hand and light new ones after each new section we walked through.

Nathan and Anastasia followed behind, silent but smiling. As I looked back, they gave a thumbs-up.

They didn't have to come but they offered and I ...

I slipped out of the sparring room and found the hall empty.

Good. Hopefully, nobody else is here.

After I slinked up the stairs and found the connecting rooms devoid of life, I straightened and turned towards the front door.

Damn.

Anastasia and Nathan waved their fingers and smiled.

"Heading out?" Anastasia asked.

"Master? New people, delicious thoughts!" Galarion cut in.

FHC B3 Chapter 6: Bad Smell

As I crushed the mana and prevented it from flowing into the air, the shadowy lines receded and stretched back into her shadow. She released me but she didn't revert the shift.

Two glowing eyes appeared below me, and a growl echoed around the room.

Adeline glared, her claws tensing. But Alice poked her side and Adeline jumped away, bewildered.

"Calm down," Alice said.

It was a tense ten seconds before Adeline looked away, and her bones snapped into place. The fur r...

FHC B3 Chapter 5: Wanna See A Trick?

I waved goodbye to Astra and let her rest. The last couple of hours were fun, relaxing even. It was nice to have someone react to all the cool magic stuff I gained.

The keeper and the resulting emerald flames received a very interested reaction from the Grimm. As did my axe, which I only realized throughout the retelling that I still haven't named it. I knew I should. It was a weirdly instinctual feeling that crept along in the recesses of my mind.

But that could wait. View Post

B4 Chapter 3: Hungry Mind Squid

For a time, I laid still. My eyes were closed, and yet the vividness of the spiritplane continued to rattle in my mind. Images flashed and indescribable feelings assaulted my senses. But I kept my eyes closed and welcomed the sensations.

I could already feel the new perk settle in, lessening the pain and fear.

I wonder if anyone would keel over and spit blood if they saw my status. I should be reaching a record, right?

No one answered my thoughts. That was fine. I r...

Freki returned to my shadow, and I stretched. "So yeah. That's everything that happened so far."

Astra's chains retracted and returned the quills to their ink well. Throughout the story time, she had recorded down everything that happened on three different parchments. It was a fantastic feat of mental prowess and fine control of her skill.

The parchments were set to the side to join the stacks of paper she had gone through. It looked more than enough to make three books worth. View Post

B4 Chapter 2: A Saucy Encounter

The void took my consciousness, and I found myself floating. I opened my eyes, but a wall of frosted glass blocked the dazzling array of colors spinning behind it.

I looked around and blinked as I saw my feet. There wasn't a ground, only a sea of black tar mixed with rainbow lights.

As soon as I thought about standing, it reformed and became an island of gold amongst the black sea.

That's trippy.

And then the island disappeared. The sea followed, turning i...

"No problem, lass," he replied as he scrunched his face and backed away.

"Alice?" I asked. "Why is half your head blue?"

She shrugged. "Adeline tried to surprise me with a pie. I thought it was an attack and attacked. The color is persistent despite three washes."

FHC B3 Chapter 2: A Relaxing Morning

Surprisingly, I woke up hours later feeling refreshed. I didn't have nightmares or weird memory dreams. Not a single soul–especially an ancient monster–bothered me.

I stared at the ceiling of the pavilion and shifted my head so that Freki's horns didn't obscure my vision.

It felt weird, wrong even, to be able to rest without thinking of what I needed to do that day. For once, it looked like I could enjoy peace if I really wanted to.

We arrived at the Lightcrest mansion to the crushing embrace of Teddy's parents. They must have sensed something was amiss because they led us inside without banter and forced us to sit in the dining hall.

As Anastasia and Nathan disappeared into the kitchen, I turned to Sereza.

Just A Heads Up

There'll be no break from FHC. Book 3 starts on Monday, so no worries there. BUT, this was the last week of 4x, figured it matched perfectly with book 2 end. Like I mentioned before, FHC will be dropping to 3x a week, its something I have to do since I'm writing three stories at the same time now.

And a big thank you to those who've stuck around and are still following Cain on his journey. I hope you enjoy book 3 just as much :)
