I went through a lot of very subtle color palette options for Mee before landing on the lower left. I decided to go for one with a darker color banding after I realized that Yuu and Mee's color schemes were sort of like the sky at dawn and dusk. With that in mind, I just had to go for the dark one.

Unlike Yuu, I didn't have a very solid idea of what Mee would look like. In some of my original pictures (on the backs of receipt tapes) I drew them with a bob or pixie cuts, but ultimately I leaned toward a spikey, short hair style. These are some very early sketches of Tal and Hani. As you can see, in the beginning, Tal had very long hair and Hani had very thin, masculine features. I am so glad I changed that!

Unlike Nightmare Boyfriend, I plan on making Yuu and Mee with a broader coloring palette, including shades of blue, pink, purple, and yellow. For Yuu's palette, I was drawn to pink hair immediately because their design was somewhat inspired by Pearl from Steven Universe. I tried to steer myself away from the pink hair, but in the end, that was the one I liked best! The lower right palette is what I decided on.

These are some of the initial sketches of two characters; Hattie, and her stuffy fawn butler, Meriweather. In the beginning, I wanted Merry to start as very posh and strict but slowly come down to earth, but then (mostly because I liked his polished look just as much as his wild look) I decided to split him into two characters. So technically this counts as concept art for Hattie's other love-interest, the satyr, Art.

Just a little bit before I started work on Nightmare Boyfriend I had this idea for a nsfw comic about a pair of shape-shifting, hermaphrodite aliens named Yuu and Mee. It's been a while since I've done anything with them, but I'm contemplating making a chapter about them after I finish the first chapter of Nightmare Boyfriend. And I'll definitely be making a chapter to submit to the Lilies anthology.

I struggled immensely with Ikki's proportions. When I drew him with the trunk legs and short feet (inspired by Amethyst from Steven Universe) it was something of a breakthrough.
You can also see some early sketches at Ikki's 'nightmare' form. The one in the bottom corner is the prettiest in my opinion, inspired by deep sea creatures and outer space. However, I needed something simpler, so alas, the pretty nightmare form is not meant to be!
