The present was, at best, a tenuous peace. Being fought to a stalemate hadn't been part of his plans, which naturally meant that little in the way of planning had been done for such an eventuality. The first knock of the night always had her insides stirred up. Butterflies filled her stomach as her knuckles knocked against the metal, mouth feeling parched and a fire rising in her chest as she, after a small surge of annoyance and another knock, heard him shuffle about inside.
A man's head came into view, eyes peering down at her from beyond shades, and she smiled up at him.
