OKAY WE ARE DOING THIS FOR REAL NOW: https://www.twitch.tv/jackapn

Hey everyone! I'm trying to do more watch-along livestreams this year and we're going to kick it off with the Law & Order episode "Freedom of Expression." I haven't seen this one yet, but I read some bullet points and wowzers is it a doozy.

I'll post the crowdcast link here on Monday (and will update everyone) but, for now, save the date and ...

THERE'S TOO MUCH TV - Roundup January 2024

“What are you watching?” is pretty much the automatic question I get when I tell people what I do for a living.

I don’t have time to do full conversations on everything I’m watching but here are some stray thoughts on everything I’ve watched in the last month. I’ve also been requested to include content warnings for shows that need them, so you can see those beneath each title!

Minor spoilers.

5 Favorite Episodes: 2023

It’s time for my longest-standing End of Year tradition: highlighting my favorite episodes of the year.

Film is an in-and-out trip, while TV stays in our lives for day-long bingethons, weeks, and years as seasons stretch on. Episodes are the smallest unit of TV, and at their best they tell stories that are both individual and part of a grander narrative. They’re like great soccer players, you can appreciate their singular greatness but only in the context of a team setting.

Law & Order's Biggest Lie

Law & Order has come under a decent amount of scrutiny for its pro-police propaganda, but we're still missing the big part of the puzzle. Police officers might be cruel and ruthless, but that's because the legal system assumes you're already guilty.

You see, when a police officer harasses you or arrests you or beats you, that’s just the beginning. Because then they hand you over to the real piggies — the prosecutors and court system, which are designed to skirt your rights.

2023: One Show For Every Kind of TV Viewer

I’m not a big fan of Top 10 Lists. Even when there’s this much TV, you end up with a lot of lists that look the same, and they all kind of assume a specific viewer. But there’s a fundamental problem with that task—not everybody watches TV for the same reasons.

Some people watch TV to be transported, some want company while they fold their laundry, and some people are determined to watch the worst trash they can.

People might be turning to lists to contemplate what...

January Update

Hello beautiful people!

I want to apologize first and foremost for my lack of communication for the past month. I was trying very, very hard to finish the next episode of Copaganda before the end of 2023, and ended up getting myself sick and burned out. Just another reason to hate Law & Order.

I took a little time to reset myself and reassess how I’m going to strike a better work/life balance, which included waiting until this week to do my year-end list stuff. You’ll be g...

How The Supreme Court rubberstamps convictions - Conversation w/ Rhiannon Hamam (5-4 Podcast)

I forgot to intro Rhiannon Hamam in the video because I'm a fake podcaster :(

Rhiannon is one of the hosts of 5-4, a podcast about how much The Supreme Court sucks. She has a tremendous amount of knowledge about the history of the court and the application of their rulings from her experience as a criminal public defender. We talk about some major Supreme Court cases that have hollowed out some of our most fundamental rights.

You can follow Rhiannon's work here:

"Innocent Until Proven Guilty? Myth." — Conversation w/ Olayemi Olurin

I sat down to talk with movement lawyer and public defender Olayemi Olurin (@olurinatti) about the biggest misconceptions that media consumers have about the legal system.

We talked about Supreme Court cases that have whittled away rights, how judges and prosecutors are on the same team, and how the legal process is part of the state's punishment.

You can follow Olay's work here:...

The Anti-Copaganda of Veronica Mars

Veronica Mars is a show that has no patience for the terrible cops that patrol its episodes. It's also very nuanced in the ways it approaches the law as a social construct. Where does the show get this perspective and could it be a template for creating a cop show that is not copaganda?

Hey everyone, the next episode of Copaganda is here! I'm still dealing with copyright claims and monetization but you should be able to watch it now! If there are any issues, please let me kno...

September Mailbag 2023 & Quick Announcement

Hey everybody!

I'm hard at work on the next episode of Copaganda about Veronica Mars, which was originally slated to come out this week, but has been pushed back a month to late-October. To be totally transparent, I've been dealing with some burnout, which you may have noticed in my last roundup. Or maybe you didn't notice because I'm just so good at maintaining a healthy work/life balance. Or burying my true feelings deep. Who could say?

Collaboration with F.D Signifier

Hey all!

YouTuber F.D Signifier published a 2 hour documentary about the police, prisons, and abolition last week. It's an incredible piece, and I had the honor of being interviewed as the media expert pretty extensively. Most of what is said in this conversation is stuff I've said in other videos, but the video itself and the context he puts around it is one of the best discussions of abolition I've seen on the platform.

Why Black Mirror Had to Change

At this point, Black Mirror is a show that needs no introduction. But this year, the 6th installment of episodes were released, and well, it’s impossible to ignore how different the series feels now.

It's more focused on the past, and some episodes don't contain any dark tech at all.

While this feels like a radical departure for the show, I don’t think it actually is. That’s because for all the tech-dystopian futures Black Mirror imagines, it’s never been just about ...

I chatted with Jessie Gender about Black Mirror and Star Trek

I've been working on a video about Black Mirror (it'll be out next week) and when I reached the episode USS Callister in season 4, I was struck by the juxtaposition of a sci-fi show that is often hopeful and idealistic (Star Trek) and one that is so often dark and bleak (Black Mirror)

So I decided to call the biggest Star Trek fan I know to talk about those two approaches and where those wildly different outlooks come from.
