Hmmm… I don’t know how one follows one of the pinnacles of the series so maybe it was expected that this episode seemed to under deliver. Even with great pacing as per usual, a lot of the developments felt a bit random or appealing to the fans. F&C get back and their world is still not magical and the scrabby bugs join them. Wtf…….. oh my god.
I don’t know where to start. This was the episode that I dreamed of. We enter a world where there is no sign of human life. The fact I’m limiting myself to one episode is both a curse and a blessing. Another phenomenal episode that has them teleport to a verse where Simon and Marceline never interacted since he died. Okay so that might have been the best episode of F&C so far. Maybe it’s the artistic me speaking but I loved the transitions between the two worlds, the music continues to be so well done and better then anything from S1-10, and the animations for these numbers were beautiful. Pardon my language but Holy Fuck! Wow, we revisit and are back in the FARMLAND!! The first half of the episode is a set up as we slowly get introduced to this dystopian world and the goal of finding the crown so Simon can turn into ice king. Incredible episode that is possibly recontextualizing the entire series and existence of F&C. This was hinted at subtly in 9x12 at the very end but I don’t think was before that unless Ice King had a line about “it just came to me” which would explain that. Continuing from the portal dilemma. Cake enters the world and Simon lets them leave. They explore Minerva’s human world until they leave into the forest where they encounter the squirrel from the tree episode. I love this presence and what he’s doing in life.
