'Michael Clayton' Feature-Length Commentary (with Stephen Tobolowsky)

Hey Patrons!

Stephen Tobolowsky and I both love Tony Gilroy's Michael Clayton, and what better way to celebrate that than by recording a feature-length commentary of it over Zoom with some Patrons?

Thanks to all the $20+ donors that make this perk possible, but regardless of what tier in, I hope you enjoy the recording. Feel free to let me know if you're listening to these and/or what movies you'd be interested in hearing one about next!

Borat is the same but America has changed

I had a blast watching Borat 2, AKA Borat Subsequent Moviefilm AKA Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan on Prime Video this week. But while Sacha Baron Cohen's work remains fearless, Borat's antics take on a different feel in light of all that's happened in the past few years.

Above, I share some thoughts about the film on YouTube. Thanks, as always, for making my work p...

STARTING MOMENTARILY: 5PM Pacific tonight (Tuesday Oct 20)! Let's do a Patron hangout

Hey folks: If you're around tonight, let's hang and chat about whatever you want! Hope to see some of you there.

To tune in, just go to the above link at 5pm Pacific. As a side note, I think this will be the last month I use Crowdcast - I just don't think it's worth the subscription fee. In the future, I'll probably do this as a Zoom!

The broadcast will be archived for those who aren't able to make it.

Why the new cover of the West Wing theme song was so powerful

Like many children of the 80s and 90s, this week I tuned into the West Wing's HBO Max Reunion Special - a filmed, staged recreation of the episode "Hartfield's Landing." I'll be discussing more about it on this week's episode of the /Filmcast but in the meantime, I want to recount an interesting experience I had with it.

I thought the new cover of the theme song was gorgeous and powerful, so I invited @joyofnapping to watch it with me (she has virtually no exposure to The West Wing ...

Upcoming Events for DChen Patrons (October 2020)

Hi Patrons,

I want to try to update you more often on what's coming soon on the Patreon. Since a lot of it involves movies and TV shows, it'll give you some time to prepare. Eventually, if I am able to get my affairs in order, maybe we can even make it more of a "Movie Club" type deal!

Anyway, here's some stuff that's upcoming.

For all Patrons:

Early access: A tour of my Blu-ray Collection

This video has been requested a few times by the Patrons, so I thought I'd oblige. Here's early access to a new YouTube video I made: a tour of my Blu-Ray shelf, featuring all the random shit that I've accumulated over the years.

A lot of this stuff I'm proud of. A good chunk of it I'm ashamed of. Some of it is just weird and random. Either way, I hope you enjoy, and know that it was your support that made this video possible.

(PS: Sorry the video is a bit shaky at times. St...

'Assassin 33 A.D.' Review (with Scott Wampler)

Here's the plot summary for Assassin 33 A.D.:

When a billionaire gives a group of young scientists unlimited resources to study the science of matter transfer, the scientists unlock the secrets of time travel. But they soon find out that the project is backed by a militant extremist group, and the billionaire plans to go back in time and prove that Jesus never rose from the dead.

This is one of the most bizarre, offensive movies I've ever seen and I was ...

The Tobolowsky Files returns

Good morning, Patrons! I hope this message finds you well.

When many of you backed me here, the way I conceived of it is that you were backing me as a creator, rather than for any specific thing I make or do. You believe in what I put out into the world. For this, I am incredibly grateful.

One of the things I've been working on for the past few months is a brand new season of The Tobolowsky Files. For those who don...

'The Devil All the Time' Is Not Great All The Time...

I hope everyone is having an okay weekend dealing with the sheer tonnage of news that's occurred the past week (most of it bad).

Since I hate myself, I spent some time this week watching Antonio Campos' new film, The Devil All The Time. This film's cast is incredible, but do not watch this movie if you are looking for something to pick you up and make you feel better!

WTF is happening in 'I'm Thinking of Ending Things'?

Charlie Kaufman's latest film I'm Thinking of Ending Things is arguably his most inaccessible work yet. I've spent quite a bit of time thinking about it, reading about it, and dissecting it. Here's the best explanation I've been able to come up with (Note: Spoilers, obviously).
