“Woah, hang on a second there, killer,” Hilda said, stepping between Alice and Morrigan. “What’s this about a demon?”
Alice responded by outstretching her arm as a black portal appeared on the wall. Nyx came bolting through, landing heavily yet gracefully on Alice’s forearm, cawing, “CAW! CAW! Demon! Emergency orders! ...

Morrigan followed Hilda through the dusty, abandoned house and down into the basement. Whatever furniture remained was pushed against the walls. The kitchen was dusty, lacking any appliances or signs of life.
The basement stairs creaked beneath them as Hilda glanced over her shoulder and asked, “So, Morrigan, how’s the changeling been?”...

Morrigan had breakfast with Evelyn that morning, Evelyn acting like everything was normal. Well, to be fair, “normal” wasn’t really something that ever existed in their relationship, but a comfort had begun to form that seemed to be disappearing now.

“So…” she began, glancing down at Noir. “You said I’m getting two days off?”
“Yes. I will bring it up to Master, but I am sure he will agree it is best. Though I suspect he may want to have a discussion with you.”

"Morrigan, no,” Noir said. “Even if they are not on your list—”
“I’m on duty,” she said, her voice low and distant. She kept her eyes on the ground. “I could still end up affecting fate. I wouldn’t normally be here if the list didn’t bring me here, so anything I do could cause ripples.” She felt the words l...

Hilda cast a spell on Anna so she wouldn’t hear them while she slept on the couch. Alice, meanwhile, found a corner to stick herself in, where she remained with arms folded and eyes glowing red like a phantom stalking the room. She assured them that if Anna were to wake, she wouldn’t see her, though.
“Alright, seems we got one situati...

“The hell is her problem!” Morrigan shouted as she walked down the street, Noir padding along by her feet.
“I would not take her too personally. She has always had a rather black and white view of the world.”
“She thinks I’m evil? Like, what the hell? That’s just insane.”
Though as she said that, Morrigan fel...

Morrigan had never thought much about dating before Emma. Though, she was aware of certain expected milestones in a relationship. Holding hands, the first kiss, bringing her home to meet her mother…
That last one is definitely one she'd planned to skip because… well…
A gagging sound echoed from upstairs, followed by a few wet coughs.
Morrigan winced. “Sorry.”
Emma blinked, then offered a crooked smile that was doing its best to be supportive. “Hey, don't wo...

“Great. Tell Evelyn I said hi.”
“I uh…” Morrigan blinked and reread the message. “S-So… I need to, uh… I’ll be right back.”
“Morrigan?” Emma asked, looking over her shoulder. Hilda was halfway down the hall but stopped in her tracks. Alice was still standing by the couch with folded arms and a look on her face like a fast-food worker listening to a guy argue that he definitely ordered extra onions three hours ago.

First off, sorry for the recent silence. Life’s been a bit hectic between some personal-life stuff and my main job. On top of that, we’re nearing the end of Volume 3, and I’ve been taking my time with these final chapters to make sure everything lands the way I want it to. I should be back to posting new chapters soon, though, so thank you so much for your patience and support!
Now for some exciting news:
Volume 1 of Death is a Girl is officially set to release Augus...

The inside of the manor was just as gothic and lifeless as the outside. The front door opened into a grand room overlooked by a second-floor balcony. Faded banners hung in tatters from the railing, and twin staircases flanked either side. Below, broken furniture lay scattered across the marble floor—an overturned table, a cracked chair, and other splinters of a forgotten past.
“So… are you the butler, or…” Hilda asked, trailing a few paces behind Terri.
“No butler,” ...

Hilda never found Morrigan particularly intimidating, even knowing what she was. The white skin and glowing red eyes felt more like quirks than threats, and in every other way, Morrigan was just a normal teenage girl. It was easy to forget she was a reaper.
This girl, on the other hand, had something unnerving about her very presence. Her red eyes didn’t just glow—they burned, casting eerie reflections beneath the shadow of her hood as her scarred lips curled into an ominous smile.<...

Down a lonely street, with little more than the occasional abandoned farm or trailer, or a side road marked with a faded “Private Property” sign—an orange Jeep rumbled along, blasting heavy metal music.
As Hilda passed a sign reading "Atomyst’s Magic and Occultism, three miles ahead!" she turned the volume down slightly. She hadn’t visited the shop in a while, despite having plenty she could share with Arrietta. Right now, though, she needed help.
She had c...

As Morrigan slipped through the staff area, she passed an orderly whistling and spinning a keychain around his finger. For a moment, she thought he was staring at her, but he kept going as if he hadn’t noticed her at all. She supposed that if he’d truly seen her—white face, red eyes—he would have stopped dead in his tracks. Even with glamour, she’d still look like a goth-girl patient whom he’d likely assume escaped her room; there was no way she’d passed off as a staff member.

“So, you believe he truly was cursed?” Larson’s spirit asked, leaning forward over the table in an engaged but not overly invasive posture.
“I mean, if he’s saying it, I don’t doubt it,” Morrigan answered. “That kid he mentioned—Todd—his sister actually is a witch, and she’s, uh… well, I wouldn’t put it past her to do something like that to someone. When I met her, she planned on sealing my spirit inside a little bottle and putting me on a shelf or something. S...

“Hm? Yeah, why?”
Emma hesitated. “I mean… the next person on your list is going to be murdered.” Her words trailed off. “I know what you have to do as a reaper, but… I don’t know.”
Morrigan cracked her neck. “Yeah, I get it. And you’re right—it’s different from when someone dies naturally or in a freak accident. But this isn’t the first one I’ve done like this....

Emma's window opened onto a lower roof, with a tree right alongside it to serve as a convenient escape route. Getting down just required stepping onto one sturdy branch that Emma pointed out, and then Morrigan had to stretch a leg to the next branch below. From there, it was just a four-foot drop to the ground.
Emma peeked around the corner to make sure no nosy neighbors were around to witness their suspicious departure, then signaled for Morrigan to follow.
Once they’d made it ...

“Okay, as promised, here you are,” Evelyn said with a smile. “Just please remember to keep in contact through text. I’ll be back to pick you up in four hours.”
“Yup, gotcha.” Morrigan nodded as she reached behind her seat to grab the bag of clothes. She figured Emma would want to see them.

“Hey there, rookie. A little late, are we?”
Morrigan gulped, her eyes fixed on the reaper as he approached. He didn’t carry the calm, almost serene demeanor of Lawrence—the reaper she’d encountered on that ill-fated camping trip earlier in the summer—but he wasn’t as overtly menacing as Alice, either. His presence settled somewhere in between, radiating a kind of casual indifference.
“Yeah… sorry about that. I got a little held up.” Morrigan glanced down at Noi...

School supply shopping was a little less interesting, and Evelyne seemed to try to get more involved, probably upon realizing left to her own devices, Morrigan might not actually grab anything.
Can I really go back to school? Isn’t that kind of crazy? I mean, I’m a reaper. Besides, I don’t want to deal with the rumors and gossip that’s probably been going around about me. I also don’t want to put Emma in an awkward position because she won’t want to ditch me, and then sh...

Evelyn set a plate down in front of Morrigan with bacon, eggs, toast, and a small bowl of fruit. Morrigan stared at the meal. A home-cooked meal. Her mom rarely made anything, usually simple stuff like eggs and anything that could just be popped into a toaster. More often, Morrigan would just make those things for herself.
“It’s not much, but I hope you enjoy it,” Evelyne said as she took her seat across from Morrigan.

Morrigan could have just stayed in bed all morning. She’d gone to sleep fairly early, with only a few uncomfortable dreams breaking an otherwise sound night’s rest.
One dream, though, lingered—it involved the stone-toothed demon from her second day as a reaper. The one she had chased onto a rooftop and into what Noir called negative space.
In the dream, Morrigan shadow-stepped through the city, heading home. She consciously avoided the graveyard, and when she entere...

NOTE: Sorry for the delay on this chapter! I had an ice storm that left me without power and internet for a while. I'll be posting chapters 124 and 125 later today to catch up!
“What kind of mistakes?” Morrigan ventured.

Due to an ice storm I was without power for two days earlier this week, and my Internet provider has an ongoing outage. Unfortunately, since I write locally on my desktop computer, posting these chapters is impossible until I have a connection again.
However, as soon as my Internet is up and running again I'll be posting all the chapters I am behind at once. Hopefully that's tomorrow but may be longer.
Thanks for your understanding and sorry for the inconvenience!

Morrigan found Pepper in the living room and pulled her aside. Without a word, Pepper followed her upstairs, her eyes wide, already bracing for what was coming.
Once inside the bedroom, Morrigan took a deep breath, hands in her pockets. “So… I guess this is it. I’m leaving now.”
Pepper’s shoulders slumped. “I figured.” She stared down at her feet. “I’ll miss you.”
