Arc 3 -> Let's go!!

>> Apologies for the delay! Recap and synopsis below. Uploading today's chapter now!

>> What came before

Nar, a young worker/sinner, takes the Climb in order to reach the fabled outside and to earn forgiveness for the Original Sin. This is a crime committed by his long forgotten ancestors but which still stains the souls of their descendants, forcing them to a lifetime of indentured work in the darkness of the B-Nex in order to pay for their debts.

End of Book 4 - Chapter 233 - A Fool

Nar rocked his head to the beat of the heavy bass blasting dully against his chest.

Stuffed full of purple food, and his thoughts happily sluggish from purple booze, he stared down at the dance floor of the club the storm gliders had brought them too, the final destination of their first night of leave, as they called it.

Before dinner, they had been brought to where they would be sleeping for the duration of their stay in Haven, a squat building filled with bunk bed rooms which t...

Chapter 232 - Purple Food, Purple Drinks!

(Quick note: I removed the "z" from the undead speech, as it made it hard to read :) )

“Yoh, Kur’s party! I heard you guys almost died!”

“Mynap!” Tuk shouted.

They filtered out of the beetle with the other apprentices, and followed Tuk towards the gathering of various Scimitar crew from the many different departments that kept the ship flying. Amongst them was Mynap and his squad of Storm Gliders, who were their designated escort.

As they left the ship, crew ...

Chapter 231 - Strong But Weak

They arrived sometime in the middle of the night, and were ordered straight to their rooms, with orders to report back to sickbay whenever they woke up, to have their bodies checked for any lingering frost damage. Meanwhile, the injured were shipped off to sickbay, with Rel, Tuk and Mul expecting to be discharged by the afternoon of the following day, and Gad requiring some more intensive healing, but expected to make a full recovery within the next three to four days.

Nar remained just...

Chapter 230 - Well, That's A Surprise

“Uh, Jamios? Can you come over here for a sec?” Senior Healer-Apprentice Tyjakis called, beckoning his companion over with one of his free hands.

Nar sat beside Kur, Cen, Jul and Viy, cross legged on the floor of the main sickbay room of the black ship, the same room where Gad, Rel, Tuk and Mul now slept in, on beds that almost touched each other in the cramped room that occupied a good second third of the ship, the first having been reserved for the ship’s impressive array of eng...

Chapter 229 - What Can Never Happen

(As promised, the Monday chapter is released today instead. Have a great weekend everyone!)

“What are they doing?” Cen whispered to herself.

Nar looked up from the uneven steps he was struggling to navigate with his wobbly legs, and glancing to his left, he found that a priestess was intoning a chant of some kind as she used some sort of skill. She slowly passed her glowing golden hands over one of the white and golden armored and armed delvers, and some kind of liquidy, bubb...

Chapter 228 - Welcoming Committee

“On your knees!” someone shouted. “Hands behind your back! Do not use aura! Do not draw your weapons!”

Nar blinked until reality reasserted itself into meaning once more, and he quickly shielded his eyes from the bright white light blinding into his retinas.

His steaming sword had been automatically returned to his inventory by their exiting the dungeon, and he heard some kind of commotion going on from beyond the bright light. Through the gaps in between his fingers, he j...

Chapter 227 - To Push Through Anything

Death was coming for them.

The illatrian lay broken against the crystal wall, destroyed by Cen’s mighty new skill, and yet, not knowing how or why, Nar knew that the monster was not downed for good. That the battle was not yet over, and that his part was not yet played…

And so, he struggled to hold on, and to make it work.

But [Aura Blade] fought him, refusing to yield to him, even now, when he needed it the most. Even as death rose in front of them, the truth revealed f...

Chapter 226 - Still Standing

Cen looked up at Kur’s words.

“You mean…”

“Yes. Can you use your new skill, please?” Kur asked. “And you, Nar, your [Aura Blade]?”

“We will bring down the cave, Kur” Nar muttered, considering the rocky ceiling above them. Once so solid, it now looked so frail… So fragile, in the face of what he might unleash. “And that’s if I can even use it…”

“You can, I trust you both,” Kur said. “You two are our only hope now, and if...

Chapter 225 - Mul is Mul

“Go!” Mul shouted, shoving Jul out of the way.

“But Tuk’s not here yet!” the quam cried.

“I can hold them!” Mul shouted back. “And the shitbrain’s coming soon enough!”

“I’ll wait…”

“Jul,” he said, turning his flaming helmet to her. “Trust me. Go get that thing, alright? It’s something only you can do.”

“I… Alright!” Jul said, wincing as Mul dodged under a frost mace, and then moved back from a shield slam. “Be careful...

Chapter 224 - Heed The Call

-[ Penitent, heed the call…

Remove this stain from the Radiants’ Creation! ]-

Rel blinked off the message and stared upon the illatrian once more.

I’m not imagining it… she thought, her eyes wide.

There was a very fine and crimson mist swirling around the undead monster, and since none of the others had mentioned it, it could only mean that she was the only one that could see it. And she knew exactly what it was, just ...

“The healer, a caster and a warg, a shield goblin and four spear goblins,” Kur listed. “Damn it… I didn’t expect them to run back to the boss.”

“I’m more surprised that the boss didn’t come out here,” Tuk said, scanning the fallen goblins strewn across the ice coated cavern. “Why wait until they’re half dead?”

“There’s always a reason,” Gad said, her face stoic as Kur dabbed some kind of pungent cloth against her frozen cut. “Maybe i...

Chapter 222 - Ice Goblins

Nar crept forward, followed by the purple-blue armored spearwoman, and headed towards the now eerily silent cave entrance.

“We’ll get them back,” he whispered to the ring tosser as he took his place.

“Just stay alive, man,” Tuk said, giving him a pointed look. “The rings don’t matter.”

Nar nodded and flattened his back against the cave, and Viy creeped past the cave entrance to position herself on the other side, where Mul and Gad waited to leap into the cave...

Chapter 221 - The Cave

The way up to the cave proved thankfully uneventful, and other than a few trips and scrapes here and there, the party eventually found itself crouched behind a dense growth of bushes and tightly knit branches, spying on the cave entrance a few feet from them, the sky having long gone dark overhead.

Nar’s heart was in his mouth, as he silently watched Jul creep her way towards the cave, from which a flickering of orange flames shone.

Too close, damn it! He thought, ...

Chapter 220 - How (Cheap) Potions Work

Viy deposited him at Kur’s and Gad’s feet, while the others were rummaging through the bodies, looking for any valuable loot.

Looks like he changed his mind on looting, Nar thought, wincing at his back. I can use the rest anyways…

“Thank you for stopping those two,” Kur said, kneeling in front of him. “That’s going to make our lives a whole lot easier.

“No worries,” Nar said, tentatively stretching his lower back.

“What in the pile happened here?” Kur whispered, taking in the scene. “Are those white goblins? And are they looting the forest goblins?”

“They fought each other, and the forest goblins lost,” Nar explained. “Those wolf riders were throwing ice skills around, and they killed the troll… And I don’t think the other trolls are alive either. They would’ve been here, fighting with the forest goblins to survive if they were.”

“They were fighting together?” Kur ...

Chapter 218 - Forest & Ice

“N-Nar?”

Nar turned his down at the unexpected voice, and a smile slowly spread across his lips.

“Well, well, well,” he said, looking down at a very uncomfortable and embarrassed Cen, still cradled in his arms, but very much awake now. “Good morning!”

“Is she awake?” Mul asked, the sounds of the not-so-distant battle momentarily forgotten.

“W-Why? What happened?” Cen stammered. “And why are you all in armor…”

Grinning, Nar lowered her to...

Chapter 217 - In The Fog

Black and white sharp lines floated in a living blackness that absorbed all sound, and it all felt so familiar. A reminder of the cubeplant. Of home.

The memories of the warm golden light and the gentle caress of the breeze were distant now, and they walked in silence, in the cold darkness.

White lines now surrounded them on all sides, as they fully entered the dense part of the forest, and their path had become extremely uneven, with rises and falls in the forest floor, and large...

Chapter 216 - Experimentation

The cave was not far from the Goblin Camp, and stood, half-buried, within a small clearing in the forest. With a trickle of Mul’s aura, the aura heater filled up the small cave with a comforting red glow, and it made for a surprising  more than passable accommodation for the night.

Gad stood by the opening, almost blocking the narrow entrance with her muscular frame, and scanned the impenetrable darkness with a piercing stare, Nar sitting by her side.

Outside, it had begun ...

Chapter 215 - Yup, Something's Very Wrong Here

“I can’t sense anything anymore,” Jul whispered.

The walls of dark blue-gray that suffocated them had grown impenetrable, and not even the shadows of the trees managed to loom through anymore, not unless they were directly next to them, in the little, ragged circle around them in which it was still possible to see.

Nar’s [Sight] had never been able to penetrate through the fog, and his [Hearing] had been rendered useless shortly after leaving the empty Wolves’ Den, so th...

Chapter 209 - Rain

There was a void, not of blackness, but of empty, stark whiteness, and somehow, that was much more disturbing than if he had just been plunged into absolute darkness.

Nar could still feel his body, and he flexed his fingers, and tapped his feet to make sure he was all still there… He found that there was an up and a down, but other than that, there was nothing to be seen or heard, and no matter how much he looked down at himself, he could see nothing but utter and sheer whiteness.

Chapter 207 - Overnight Flight

“Everyone ready?” Kur asked.

They had gathered by the table, all of them wearing the tight, yet concealing black combat gear in its inert form. Had it not been for the fact that they were about to head into their first ever dungeon, the bobbing collection of heads seemingly floating in the air would’ve gotten a few smiles and chuckles out of them, as it usually did. But as it were, not even Tuk mentioned it, and he instead fidgeted with one of his rings in nervous anticipation. View Post
