"The Grundlestag" and the Real Monster of the Month...

The Grundlestag was drawn as part of a demo presentation recently at BYU based on votes and input from the crowd. It was a ton fun to draw and we loved hanging out with everyone.  (Sorry Hippo Hero, Brawler Boar, and Yakuza Yak, you will all have to wait!)

I had plenty of time this week to finally finished him up because we are fully bunkered in here. It's as if it's Birdbox out there thanks to the REAL monster of the month....

EDIT: Wednesday, 4th: Sorry everyone who tuned in today! We had to cancel the stream. Our little dog Dakota passed away last night and it is a hard time here at the moment. Thank you everyone for bearing with us. We will be back on Twitch March 18th.

Totem of the Rat King Hi-Res Drawing

Here is the tight drawing and a rough sketch from The Totem of the Rat King, our Dungeon Master Series image for February! This is the transfer drawing, rendered in 2H and HB pencil.  I have done this one very large at 16"x20" inches, and it will be the largest watercolor we've attempted so far.  The reason??  I'm painting it LIVE! For this week's Twitch stream, we are demoing the watercolor painting using The Tote...

POLL for Monster of the Month

This month's Poll for Monster of the Month is between 2 nature deities. While most of the monsters in this series are smaller and human-sized, but these 2 are gigantic, city bus-sized creatures. They are both guardians of dark, forgotten realms where humans and angels fear to tread!

So which should be our Monster of the Month for February? Which seems to...

"Some Men Just Want to Watch the World Burn." Hi Res Final of The Fire Frog!

We had time for one more monster this month! So the Fire Frog was able to sneak in for a full color version this month along with the winner, the Hedge Guard.

I also decided to use the Fire Frog for this month's Animatic, as the Hedge Guard was all of the place, and the process was a bit too messy.

I reeeeally like this mo...

Hedge Guard Final Art

The Hedge Guard defeated his mortal foe: the Fire Frog, in this month's Monster-of-the-Month battle! The Hedge Guard won by a fairly wide margin, with almost twice as many votes.

But in spite of the wide margin of victory in the polls, it was almost certainly a gruesome battle, (if the comments outlining the battle here and on Instagram...

Goblin Ambush! Final Art

Here is the final artwork for Goblin Ambush!  Whoooo! This one was awesome to work on! I had a hard time putting it down and it took every bit of the last 3 weeks to complete. (Even now I find myself wanting to go back and noodle with the odd detail here and there....)

Here is a look at what the original color comp was for the image:

POLL! Monster of the Month for January: Hedge Guard vs Fire Frog

Who should be our Monster of the Month? It is a battle of nature spirits! Would the irritable mutant frog that breathes fire win? Or the corrupted nature spirit wielding a giant sword? It seems like it would be a gruesome battle. Whoever wins would likely be left at 1 health by the end of it.

You must choose! Winner goes to full-color and will January's Monster of the ...

Sneak Preview for "Goblin Ambush!"

Today I have a sneak preview of some concept art for the next image in our Dungeon Master Series, Goblin Ambush

This one features a team of hapless adventurers who have blundered into a carefully laid trap. This one features an abandoned medieval city, which will be an interesting break from our usual backgrounds that often involve a wilderness or dungeon of some sort.  It's also easily the most complex illustration we've attempted in a very long ti...

First of all, WELCOME TO 2020!!

We've got a lot of exciting things planned for this year, so let's dive right in:

Mustard Knight Process Animatic & Mummy Minotaur Brushes!

Here is a spicy Mustard Knight Animatic! It is really straight-forward. (I mean, he's only made of mustard, right?) So he was nice and uncomplicated. Not like that Toffee Golem, that guy nearly killed me trying to get all the refractions and translucent lighting effects correct! I feel like if he were a boss fight, it was one I had to restart 64 times before finally beating him. The Mustard Knight was just so simple and easy to deal with by ...

Figgy Pudding, Mushroom Stew, and a Christmas Box of Assorted Minions for you!

We've had a lot of calls for one particular Holiday dessert that I totally forgot to add to the Holiday Feast Series: Figgy Pudding! (The classic kind that you have to light on fire!) Figgy Pudding seems like it was intentionally design to terrify kids, particularly ones who just got used to the straight-forward, sugary simplicity of Halloween candy.

Also! To round out the series I finished up "Spider-Eye Stew", now renamed to Mushroom St...

"Mustard Knight!" Monster #2 from the Holiday Feast!

It's the spiciest of Monsters for December: The Mustard Knight! As an adult I like spicy mustard in rare circumstances. But as a kid, wow, was it disgusting.

And a small personal victory on this one: We made it in under the 5 hour mark, making The Mustard Knight the only other monster to join the Mummy Minotaur in the 5 hour club. This monster came together really fast, likely because there were only 3 types of surfaces...

Drawn with a Staedtler 925 in 2H and 4B leads on Strathmore smooth bristol.

The Goo drawing is a little rough around the edges...  I ended up reworking him on the paper quite a bit because I just wasn't hitting the shape I wanted. You can still see a tiny bit of the reworking, but overall I am just amazed at the amount of reworking this Strathmore 500 Bristol can take without feathering up or deteriorating. It is just awesome paper.

Introducing the Dungeon Master Series!

I've always had a love for the classic dungeon master style illustration... and especially ones depicting those moments where the adventurer just landed a truly terrible roll of the dice.

With that said, I am pleased to announce a new Classic Fantasy Illustration series here on the Patreon for 2020: The Dungeon Master Series!  The goal of this series is to produce a Portfolio Print Set of images dedicated to those RPG moments...
