Roadmap 2023

Welcome to 2023! 2022 continued the long, unending train wreck that started in 2020. At the start of last year I had a dozen big, amazing, starry-eyed plans in 2022 of which I finished maybe one. The first half of the year was spent catching up from the disasters of 2020 and 2021, and then the second half of the year was a floating dumpster fire of non-stop school sicknesses. (They called it a tripledemic, but it was more of a decademic for us...) So for 2023, I hesitate to promise any New Ye...

"Waiting for Pick-Up" Hi-Res and Process Guide

Today I am pleased to finally present the first full color splash image from the Martian of the Month series. "Waiting for Pick-up" is the menu splash image for the game at the moment, and is the first of several splash images planned for the game. The image also offers a great chance to explore the world and get to know the inhabitants a little better. The main goal of the image was to create something that invites the viewer in, and makes them want to play it. (Which I hope is working!)&nbs...

Halloween Battle 2022: "The Gloomwald Swamp"

Today, I am happy to share the hi-res final for our 2022 Halloween Battle, "The Gloomwald Swamp."  I've been excited about this one for a long time, and working on all the zombie trees and medieval chaos turned out to be every bit as much fun as I had hoped it would all be!

Do the kids make it out of this one? I don't think sharp and pointy weapons ar...

There is a LOT of work to share, so I am going to be releasing it in chunks like this one over the next few months. I hope you enjoy them as much as I've enjoyed making them!

"Journey's End" Justin and Annie Gerard Collaborative Process

By Justin and Annie Stegg Gerard

Note: A PDF version of this article has been attached below for your convenience.

Artists are peculiar creatures, and no two are created alike. They often have vastly different goals and ideas for the same image, and will pursue those goals in wildly different methods. One may esteem classical beauty as the ideal for an artwork, while another may see anarchic cultural rebellion as the highest form of visual expression. Because of t...

#LETSDRAWMONSTERS Prompt for Smaugust 2022

The Fire Wyrm, otherwise known as the Fire-breathing Garden Snail, is based upon a curious sketch in a long forgotten manuscript where it is seen looming on the edges of peaceful fields, or stalking along the roofs of quiet cottages. The fire wyrm is a large, fire-breathing gastropod boasting a heavy shell, with the hind body of a snail, but the front body of a dragon with prominent, spiked horns. In its various depictions, its size ranges from that of a tiny...

Monster of the Month Bag of Treasure

This month I have a LOT of cool stuff to share with you! First, we've got the new monster, "Shaz'ral". I painted this character because I felt like the monster of the month series lacked something genuinely sinister, something that you'd want to fight, rather than maybe adopt as a mildly-destructive pet. I wanted more, "Kill it! Kill it with fire!"

Also, I just wanted to paint some vipers with a new brush I designed earlier in the month for the Faerie Queene. And ...
