This chapter has a second part.  I'll be combining them later.

“No. I can’t read minds.  Buf if we make a contract, I can sort of scan you one time.  It would only be possible during the post-contract melding process and in that one instant, I can understand you better.  The opportunity comes with a high price, when you think about it.  I have to pay with my freedom, well, I’ll need to follow the terms of our contract. Probably a good thing for...

Long chapter!

As he’d already figured, meeting Lavinia–a spirit with a soul of a Summoner originally from Albion–had an element of inevitably since the two of them had to be resonating strongly on multiple levels to talk like this.  They were both in Summoner Academy grounds.  Bumping into each other was only a matter of time.  The most unlikely part about this chat was that it had happened so quickly and was taking place in his room.  He felt gr...

Need some help, fam

*written 8/16

Hey everyone,

First, thank you to everyone who has reviewed Past Life Hero on Royal Road so far.  Ya'all are rad.

So...there's a problem on there.

I only have two in-depth reviews right now on Royal Road for Past Life Hero.  I don't know what the actual name of them are, I mean the reviews with Overall, Style, Story, Grammar, and Character.

The problem is that one of the two were by an angrybro who got pissed at the direction I took t...

Past Life Hero, Chapter 30

Max reflected that even with all the strange social situations he'd been in over two lifetimes, this was still definitely one of the most notable. He was currently sitting on his bed, facing the ghost girl, Lavinia, as she sat in his chair.

He had not moved his desk chair to where it currently rested on the floor facing him. Instead, Lavinia had frowned for a solid fifteen seconds, gestured and the chair had moved itself.

Max eyed Lavinia and said, "So I know that of all the spiri...

Chapter 29

It felt like he’d had a bad dream.

Max woke up, staring at the sky. But in less than a second, he remembered what had happened and was instantly mad as hell. He sat up, looking down at himself, and sure enough, his body was whole. He didn't know if he was in exactly the same field he had appeared in when he first came to the Quadrant, but it sure looked the same.

Lying next to him on the ground was his dagger and a spear. Max's body didn't feel stiff or odd at all; he was not in...

Max crouched down, dagger at the ready.   He wasn't feeling optimistic about this situation. There were four men with spears blocking the entrance to the alley and another four in front of the restaurant plus Regal. Suddenly, a screen popped up to one side of his vision that read:

You are being ambushed. Caution! An alert has gone out to the appropriate authorities.

Max blinked and closed the window. Bit late for that now, he thought.

On Saturday morning, Max walked on the road to the central area with Lance and Wiley.

It wasn't early, and it wasn't late. About halfway between breakfast and lunch. He had expected more people to be heading to the central area, but there were only two other groups that he had seen. One was a group of upperclassmen girls, and the second was a large mixed group armed to the teeth that Max was very confused by until he remembered what he had heard about students raiding dungeons.

Some writing advice...on advice

I haven't done this for a while, but after seeing a bunch of writing advice on Twitter, I felt compelled to writing some of my own.

This next part is not a flex, it's to add context.

I regularly chat with some of the most successful fantasy authors in the world.  Others that I don't know personally or have just met once or twice, I follow on social media.

My take on writer advice? All of it's worth consuming if the person giving it has some success. How-to artistic adv...

Max grabbed a snack.  The conversation started after everyone sat down at the table. "You're done for the day now, right Max?" asked Lance.

"Yeah, but after this, I was going to go work out, I think."

Lance shook his head. "I probably should, too.  Been thinking about it.  But whenever I see you doing all that stuff, it makes me tired just from watching."

"Well, they tell us that after we go back to our real bodies, the transfer will take all the good stuff fr...

During Max's walk to get some food, he kept feeling like he was seeing things out of the corner of his eye. Sure enough, when he opened his third eye, his summoner eye, he was able to see something that actually astonished him. The very walls themselves were covered in spirits. What they were used for, he wasn't entirely sure. He couldn't even see them very clearly, but he could tell that there were spirits dwelling within the walls and they were at peace. Max wondered if these spirits were a...

Glad you're here for Past Life Hero

Hi folks!

I'm trying to get those $10 chapters out as fast as possible so I can make it an official tier, and also so readers can see what's coming.

It's a little frustrating that readers with less patience on Royal Road keep giving the story bad reviews when what they're saying is going to be completely incorrect in like... 10 more chapters.   Oh well.  I knew I was taking a risk with a slower burn (to start with) story on RR.

I had forgotten how frustrati...

long chapter!

That Friday, Max woke up and immediately got ready for class. He thought he had woken up a bit late, and the magical clock in his room agreed with him. Dammit.  He hadn’t set an alarm.  Good thing for his new habits or he could have overslept much worse.

When he got out of the shower and was drying off his hair, he thought he heard more strange noises coming from what would have been his roommate's room. By this time, he was absolutely sure ...

Max ate a snack during his break after Challenger Path Lore class. He still had a lot to ponder. While he thought about different Paths and what other mana-based Path might be a good fit for him in the future, he tried to rein himself in.  He was likely getting ahead of himself. After all, he hadn't even truly taken his first step yet on the Summoner Path. Theoretically speaking, given enough time, it should manifest on its own, but he'd read that with instruction it was all about a hund...

When Max woke up on the first Thursday of his first semester at Summoner Academy, he started the day as he usually did–heading for the bathroom.  As he left his room, he heard weird noises coming from his roommate's room again.  At this point, he was relatively sure that he didn't have a roommate because he hadn't seen the bathroom used by anybody or any signs of it the entire time he'd been living there so far.

Now  he was actually a little bit more excited about class...

The next day, Wednesday, Max woke up early.  It seemed early rising was starting to become a habit. This time, he didn't hear any sounds coming from his roommate's room. He did a light workout, went to the cafeteria, and got changed. He still decided to wear a robe, but as the day before, he wore his dagger on his belt.

His first class of the day was his homeroom class, the first-year Summoner class that he had with Lance. He saw his friend across a courtyard as he was heading to t...

Halfway back, Max was surprised by Gantry Pliss approaching him.  "Your name is Max?"

"Yes. Gantry, right?"

"That's what they call me," said Gantry with a smile. His face grew serious, and he said, "Truly, I am super impressed by how you fight. What the professor said was true. You wouldn't even need to have any contracted spirits to be a serious contender against a lot of other Summoners in duels.  All you would need was to have your third eye open.  If you could s...

Long Chapter!

Max’s second day of class started off differently than the first had. He decided to get up early and work out in the morning. While he was getting ready, he heard noise in the room next to his for the first time. The entire time he'd been at Summoner Academy so far, he'd never met his roommate. In fact, I'd never seen any evidence of anybody else ever being in the bathroom, so he was fairly sure up until this point that nobody lived there.

Summoner Academy operated on a five day class week, with weekends being two days.  Seven day weeks similar to Earth made the system easy for Max and Lance to adapt to.  Classes were staggered.  Some classes were Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and some were only on Tuesday and Thursdays.  This meant that three days a week Max had three classes for somewhat shorter amounts of time, and two days a week he had two classes and both lasted longer than the others.

The $10 tier is a work in progress.  I'll be building it up to the 15 chapters or so ahead that I'm shooting for over the next 2 weeks.

Luckily, Max didn't have any other problems before registering for classes.  It went without a hi

Even though the parking lot was relatively small, there were few enough vehicles to allow for plenty of room.  In fact, there was a handy, empty space outside right after leaving the food court. This seemed weird to Max.  Back on Earth, it seemed people were often trying to park as closely to the doors as possible.

Lance caught his eye outside and gave him a panicked expression.  The banker-turned-Summoner student was following along in the crowd, obviously concerned. &nb...

Past Life Hero advance chapters

Hey everyone.

I'm going to be adding more chapters on here at a faster rate than free chapters on Royal Road.

My eventual goal is to raise the number of chapters per tier, and have a decent $10 tier.

I'm working on it!

At the edge of the Summoner Academy, Max only saw one or two other students in the very plain, grubby medieval style clothing that he and Lance were wearing. He realized now that others would likely be able to tell they were new arrivals in the central area. Oh well, screw it, he thought. Even if everybody knew they didn't have any money, it would still be interesting to see what the central area was like.

It turned out that getting to the central area was not as straightforwar...

Max and Lance headed over to the auditorium where their group of newcomers had received almost all of the informational assemblies over the last few days. After Max took a seat, he noted the usual group of five staff in the middle of the floor waiting for them. Now that Max had been at the academy a few days, he knew more about them.

Interestingly enough, the red-headed professor Munka actually was not a Summoner. She was a Sorceress, and was still faculty in the Summoner Academy, just...

The next day was not very eventful, as it was mostly taken up with more processing and various meetings where most of what Max had already learned by reading the pamphlets was explained to the group by professors, usually Professor Happy. But during this time, the newcomers also familiarized themselves with the Academy and with the Quartet.

On the second day, Max actually discovered that I wasn't the only person from Earth either. There was one other person that he found in the group of...

The next day, Max woke up right on time, his internal clock gently nudging him awake. He sat up, stretched, and thought about how glorious it was to wake up this way in this lifetime. More than anything back on Earth, being able to wake up without feeling like hell on two legs was something he had missed from Albion. However, after waking up feeling great, he realized he had a problem.  The only thing he had to change into was his simple shabby clothing from earlier.

Max's room definitely wasn't bad. In fact, he was mildly surprised that it was as good as it was. After all, after seeing more of the Summoner Academy on the way, he hadn't been too impressed by the rest of the grounds. Earth was a no-mana, high-technology world, and it had pretty decent facilities, at least in the richer countries. But in Albion, in Max's past life, there’d been good facilities as well. Just because a world has low mechanical technology didn't necessarily mean the overall ...

This time, Max's transition wasn't so comfortable. He woke up on his face in the dirt. Pushing himself up, the first thing he noticed was that he was in a field with other people who all looked as discombobulated as he did. The second thing he noticed was that he wasn't wearing the same clothes as he’d had on back on Earth.

"What the hell?" he mumbled.  After the words had come out of his mouth, Max realized that he hadn't even spoken English. It seemed that he'd been implanted w...
