COMIC: Back to School

BONUS Panel:

The wall to wall back to school posts on my timeline reminded me of this comic from 2019.  It was a pretty simple one so I figured I'd just update it real quick!

I sized Fran up by being smarter with the speech bubble placement.  I made her arms bendier and fiddl...

Making of "Green Eggs and Fran"

2 years ago I drew this Dr Seuss style Vincent for a bonus panel:

I was really pleased with it and wanted to do more.  I envisioned it being like "Green Eggs and Ham", where Fran begs Vincent to eat his dinner, but he still ends up refusing.  Being our resident poet, I asked J to write me a story I could illustrate.  He did, but honestly... it was TOO GOOD!  Dr Seuss rhymes ...

Making of "Nice, Relaxing Shower"

Being a first-time mum was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life.  Our oldest was a colicky nightmare and those first few months were pure survival-mode.  Sneaking away for a shower was a heavenly thing, but my sleep deprived brain would find baby cries in the white noise of the water, keeping me constantly on edge.

I've had this comic as an animation in my head for a while, but it was hard to reverse engineer it into a storyboard.  The timing was key, so I couldn't...

Making of "Ready to Tumble"

The kids were playfighting on our bed -which is pretty high.  J walked in and 7yo (while getting repeated hit in the head with a pillow) cheerfully explained that they were playing "Idiots: Battle Arena", to which J replied "Looks like you're both winning" and left.

I wanted to up the ante for the comic -make them even MORE ridiculous!  I immediately thought of the old British show "Gladiators" where two contestants would stand on pillars and try to knock each other off with g...

Making of "Clever Hacks"

My oldest started playing Minecraft around the same age I got my NES (6ish) and I am constantly astounded by his abilities compared to mine.  I remember feeling VERY clever holding the Zapper up to the screen, it never once dawning on me that I was just cheating!  Roll on to my kid, a year younger, making this "Nerf Gun House" on a whim!

Making of "Rad"

This was a word for word back and forth I overheard between J and our oldest.  I'm unsure of the year, but judging by the way he's talking, he must have been 2-3ish?  They were lying on their tummies in our bed, kicking their feet up in the air and watching something on the iPad.  They looked like a couple of 90s teenage girls chatting on the phone.  J was fully engaged and sincere; loving every minute of talking to his little boy.  It was absolutely adorable!

Making of "So Obvious"

My oldest threw this one at me when he was about 5.  Told to me like I was some kind of moron.

The funny thing is so much of parenting is figuring out when to "ignore yourself"!  It's near constant mental gymnastics to work out which way to go on every request (demand!) 😅

I didn't want them both just standing there, so I thought Fran making dino nugs would make it more visually interesting -plus more insulting that he's asking for candy when she's clearly making him d...

Making of "So Fun"

I got this idea at a birthday party my oldest attended. The venue had a rock climbing wall and we were both excited for him to have a go -until I had to sign the "You can't sue us if we kill your kid" paperwork!

I choked my terror down of course -and he was fine (dumbass goofed around doing Spiderman jumps with the harness, so he never actually climbed that high!) but it did tinge the event with an unpleasant undercurrent.  It's weird being a mom.  I fight hard to resis...

Making of "Influencers"

The mailboxes in our neighborhood are grouped together and there's only room for a couple of cars next to them.  You park up, grab mail and go as quickly as possible to make room for someone else.  Not everyone got the memo though and one day there was a car stopped right in the middle with a lady standing outside, yakking away to the driver.  We sat and waited for a bit before pulling around them to get our mail.  As we were driving away, we noticed the lady was View Post

Making of "Healthy Snacktime"

This one went through quite a few changes!  Let's start at the beginning...

Sometimes I sneak a little treat for myself while the kids are distracted.  I'm not proud of it -actually, that's a lie. There's definitely some pride in getting away with it! :)

Sometimes at snacktime they'll ask for candy and I'll direct them to a snackbar or goldfish crackers instead.  Then while they're not looking I'll sneak a little chocolate for myself.  One of the b...

Making of "Big Feelings"

A fan tagged me in this fantastic tweet last year, saying it sounded like a Litterbox Comic -she wasn't wrong!  I put a note of it away in my files, but I think I must have just recreated someone else's tweet and didn't want to do another so soon.  Even though I always get permission from the authors to use their tweets, it still feels a little wrong somehow?

I came across the twe...

Making of "Howl" (and the Dog Family)

I've had a big list of dog comic ideas for a while.  J and I were out shopping (coincidentally in Target!) when he suggested making the dog comics a Patreon exclusive thing.  Having them exist away from the cats solved a lot of storytelling problems I was having.

The next step was fleshing out the characters.  I didn't want them to just be the cat family in dog shapes!  I've had the mom, dad and boy down in my head for a while.  Bunny (the mom, named after a fri...

DOG COMIC: Howl

Here's the very first Patreon exclusive Dog Comic!  I've had a bunch of doggie ideas in my notes for years, but it's hard to wrangle them into a cat-centric comic.  Finally I can "let the dogs out!" :)

Switching things up a little next month!

I've made a deal with Webtoon where they'll get new Litterbox Comics a week before anyone else. That means you’ll no longer have to pledge $5 to get your paws on early release comics; you can just go to Webtoon and see them for FREE! (starting 7/6)

So where does that leave you wonderful $5+ pledges?

Instead of the early release per...

Making of "This Weekend"

Our youngest had this conversation with J a couple of Father's Days ago -he must have been 3?  We thought it was delightful how brutally honest he was!

It's quite hard to have conversations between the parents and Cooper because he's so tiny.  I always need some way to bring their heads closer together to fit in a panel.  Normally I have Cooper in Joel's arms, but I've been doing that a lot lately.  If Cooper wasn't going up, Joel would need to come down!

Making of "Move"

As a horribly awkward English person, I think about stuff like this a lot.  With the addition of social distancing In the summer of 2020, I thought about it a whole lot more!

I sketched out this comic and showed it to J.  He didn't really get it, so I tried tidying it up a bit.  He got it, but didn't really find it that funny -he's not so into the #relatable stuff.  I pursued it, but with the character designs and backgrounds it was p...
