Making of "Familiar"

This one started out quite different.  As kids grow, you find yourself hiding things higher and higher -like there's a rising tide.  First just out of reach, then counters, cupboards, higher cupboards and then....?  Then they figure out climbing and nothing is ever safe again.    This comic was going to be more about that.

I got to neater pencils and wanted to make the 2nd panel more impactful.  I thought a "War Flashback Meme" would be a good fi...

Aslan

J warning 4yo that “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe” is about to get sad. Aslan is sacrificed and 4yo is quiet.  J gives him a reassuring hug.

J: That was sad, huh pal?

4yo: Hmm -those monsters seem happy though!

I should not have shown this one to 6yo.  He found it WAY too funny and proceeded to dig out the Doggie Guitar.  I guess you could say he helped write the BONUS Panel...?

COMIC: Use Your Head (remastered)

I thought this remaster would be easy because I was pretty happy with the original, but then I felt guilty about not changing much and ended up poring over it, looking for ways to improve it.

I ended up making a bunch of little modifications, the most notable being Vincent in the last panel, which I think really adds to it! :)

Making of "Hello Shoppers"

J causally walking past my office "You should do one with a pspsps joke.  How about they lose him in a supermarket and have to make a pspsps announcement?  There you go!"  -and off he went!

With this golden idea dropped in my lap. my first thought was who's perspective should it be from?  Fran with the confused store clerk, or Vincent roaming the store and listening to the intercom.  I ended up going with a mix of both.

I usually don't know what the "NPC" ...

Making of "Bad Reviews"

This one came about because I was driving myself insane trying to find lights on Amazon.  I've been aware of my flawed online shopping habits for a while, but it suddenly struck me I probably wasn't alone.  Cue #relatable comic!

I made it about car seats because the "MY KID COULD DIE IF I GET THIS WRONG!!" factor, really amps up the insanity when digging through reviews....

Making of "I Wish"

This happened the other day while I was tucking 6yo into bed.  He clapped back with "-but YOU have loads of toys!".  I prefer to make a gag visual, so I set the comic in Fran's office and had Vincent give her a withering look.

I added a step to the animation above where I bring in my "paper dolls".  I do this every time, but I never thought to screenshot it.  I have a character sheet with emotionless outlines which I place over the rough pencils.  I chop them up...

Making of "Birthday Pup"

I did the initial sketch for this one last summer, the same time as "Drama".  I didn't want to do two "dogs destroy stuff" gags back to back, so I sat on it for a while.  As often happens, the more I looked at it, the less funny it got, until I really started to hate it.  I shelved it for nearly a year and luckily when I opened it up again, I realized I did in fact have something here.

COMIC: Meme Life

I recreated the "For The Better, Right" Anakin Padme meme for fun, but then J suggested I add more so it could be a sort of comic.

I'm going to release it tomorrow along with a meme page.  I've started working on the page already HERE!  Let me know if there are any memes or reaction GIFs you think I should add to it!

COMIC: Dinner Date (remastered)

I've been putting off remastering this one because I knew it would take ages!

Fran's line was originally going to be "No! That other table is ruining our evening!"  -which is why I had them sitting at 2 tables pushed together.  I refined the words, but it was too late to update the unnecessarily busy table.  It was satisfying to clean it up with this do-over. View Post

Making of "Embarrassing"

6yo is always getting up to ridiculous antics and then refusing to do something simple because it's "too embarrassing".

Three is always a good number for comedy so I brainstormed 3 embarrassing things for him to be doing at the start.  I had other more specific ideas (eg using display toilet in store or announcing a fart in crowded elevator) but I trimmed it down to visual gags that didn't make the panels too busy.

I made his pose in the last panel look like the Drake ...

Making of "I Got This"

This happened the other day (albeit a bit more jokingly) and we were discussing how to turn it into a comic.

J wrote down the script from his perspective, so Dad Cat was in the bathroom instructing the boys, then leans out of the doorway to give a cheerful thumbs up to a horrified Fran, who's still sitting on the couch.

We toyed around with a double joke, where Fran is giving a thumbs up back.  This was funny, but as a mom who has to share a toilet with boys, I just co...

Making of "That's Bait"

I think about this a lot when scrolling through Facebook.  SO MANY stories I come across are purely to start comment wars and feed the algorithm.  The authors don't care, they just want that delicious engagement.  It's gross and I can see what they're doing and still fall for it!

J didn't really get this one when I showed him the script.  It happens to him too, but not to the extent that he would think to do a comic about it.  Perhaps it's just our slightly diff...

Having a little bit of a break

Going to take a little break from public posting.  I've been trying in vain to build up a comic buffer and it's been really burning me out.  Figure if I take a couple of weeks off, I can do some early release comics here, recoup a little and then come back stronger.
