COMIC: Countdown

This didn't happen to us, but I read this tweet by @insoMOMniac and could 100% imagine 6yo saying it, so I asked her if I could use it! :)

Fan Art: Gadget

There are a bunch of Gadgets in my Twitter feed inspired by the most excellent @FtK_Artist!  Thought I'd join in! 😊

Here's her original piece:

Making of "Freeze"

Despite how it may come across in the comics, I do actually enjoy Elf on a Shelf.  6yo stopped reacting to the "Reporting to Santa" part, so I've largely dropped that aspect.  I'll occasionally use it on the 3yo, but he doesn't get into trouble so much.

So now it's just a fun game that makes December feel a bit more magical.  I move the elf every night, either just sit him somewhere, or do (quick!) little setups with the various toys and curiosities we have in our ...

Making of "Wishlist"

My kids are pretty clear in the things they want from Santa (LEGO!) but I've seen posts from other moms trying to work out what the heck a wishlist item is.

Last year my friend's kid asked for a "full size train and bulldozer to destroy house".  It was so funny I wrote it down so I could ask her if I could use it this year.

I've also seen photos of wishlists that are all crudely scribbled URLs.

I threw these 3 things together to make a comic!

My Brain "Is this looking hot?  Ermmm... well, I'm too far in now.  Guess they're getting a hot Dad Cat pic” πŸ˜†

COMIC: Freeze

I like to do a new "Elf Cat With a Hat" comic every Christmas and I'd been racking my brain trying to think of one.  I'd *JUST* given up and then this happened... πŸ˜…

COMIC: Dinner Talk

*JUST* finished this one, so apologies for no early release.  I was going to go with the "Wishlist" comic that I've already posted here, but I realized this would go perfectly after the last sandwich one, so I had to rush to draw it.

This is another word for word convo.  I love my guys! :)

Making of "Sandwich Law"

This happened a couple of years ago when the eldest was 4.  J had plans to illustrate a book of some of the batshit things he says, but he's moved onto a new project, so he gave me all his notes! (Yay!) :)

I'm happy to report I haven't fallen down the stairs -yet!  At the time, kiddo kept mucking around on the stairs and I found myself going on and on about me or him falling and dying (you have to be absolute with this kid or he doesn't listen!)  Clearly he'd jumped to th...

Making of "Big Book O' Facts"

We were chatting about something else entirely and J suddenly stopped and said "That parasite!  You should do one about that parasite that makes people love cats!"  Some quick googling brought up Toxoplasmosis.

This one was pretty efficient as I had linework to adapt from previous comics.  I had some trouble getting Fran to look right in the 1st panel.  I hate drawing her from different angles, but I needed her changing Cooper without revealing what she was doing. &n...

Making of "Getting Chilly"

J is somewhat of a hypochondriac.  He read a long time ago that randomly smelling burnt toast can be a sign of a stroke, so now he panics over any unexplained aromas!  When the heating in a HVAC system turns on for the 1st time in the season it's often accompanied by an odd smell as the dust that's settled is burnt away.  As it's me that mans the thermostat, it can sometimes give him a bit of a scare!

I wasn't too sure about this comic as there are several very specific p...

Making of "Tonight's Forecast"

I sketched this one out a while ago and it looked quite different.  It was alright, but I'd been leaning rather heavily on them sitting at the kitchen counter and thought I could do better.  I think I use the counter so much because I grew up reading Garfield.  It's such a brilliant way to minimize backgrounds and hide the hard to draw bodies.  It does get a bit old though!

When I circled back around to give it another go, I realized I could modify their poses from <...

Making of "Swords"

Occasionally I just get randomly down for a few days and then I'm fine again.  I went through one of those patches last week and desperately wanted to draw, but hated everything I did.  J kindly offered to help by sketching out a comic -it got me over the hump and I was off again!

I loved J's idea for panel 4, but wasn't in the mood to draw 2 characters, so I trimmed it down and used the idea for the bonus.

Our 6yo is surprisingly good with his fighting...

Making of "Comedy Timing"

Another word for word one -J is such a good sport! πŸ˜„

This one sped along because I used the lines from the Cuphead comic as a jumping off point.  Before I inked it, I decided Dad Cat looked too stiff (the camera angle in the Cuphead one was higher) so I slouched him down a bit.

Right at the end I noticed Vince's neck was a bit long in a couple of panels, so he got some last minute surge...

Making of "The Halloween Costume"

A few years ago my eldest declared he was going to be Blue Power Ranger for Halloween.  I eagerly replied "But ORANGE is your favorite color!  What about ORANGE Power Ranger?!"  He was very excited.

Of course, it was then I remembered there is no Orange Power Ranger.  Terrified of having to make a costume myself, I spent the next few days talking about HOW COOL Blue Power Ra...

Making of "Tooth Fairy"

"Most sharks have 5 rows of teeth, and can have as many as 3000 teeth at once!  It’s a good thing sharks never run out of teeth, as they lose up to 100 per day.  In fact, a shark may grow and use over 20,000 teeth in its lifetime!"  (source)

We haven't had any dealings with the Tooth Fairy yet, but apparently the going rate...

Halloween Plans

Comictober Day 24: Moon.  I didn't have anything planned for today, but this LITERALLY JUST HAPPENED!! 🀣

3yo: We gonna do Hadoween and we put the punkins outside and we wear all the costumes and you gonna be a bat!

Ghosthause: I am?

3yo: And you gonna have real wings and flap the wings and fly around all the way to the moon!

Ghosthause Oh!

3yo: And I’ll still love you on the moon.

Making of "Boldly Going"

J really throws himself into imagination play with the kids.  One day he was flying around a X-Wing when one of them tried shooting him down with Skye in her little pink helicopter, which he took umbrage with.  I'd been trying to think of how to turn it into a strip ever since.

The original Comictober prompt was "Alien" but I suggested changing repeats of last year into similar words, so it became "Encounter".  I still wanted to make it about aliens and I brainstormed and...

Making of "Horror Cosplay"

I always find little kids dressed as Chucky hilarious.  I had drawn him as that already in last years Halloween comic, but the only other small horror character is Sam from Trick 'r Treat and I didn't want to hide his face.

Jigsaw was the perfect shape and color for Vincent, although I loathed drawing the trike!

I wanted Freddie in there as he's a classic, plus cats and claws!  The stripy top made Fran a natural choice and realizing that I could draw her fur burnt ...
