Have you ever been experienced? Well, I have! And so have you all for coming here and making FranLab possible - and I want to reach out here and get your feedback and suggestions about what I can do to take advantage of our little cozy private group here, whether or not you really prefer the live video chat or these Twitter-like text posts, or something else.
What can I do better to make the Patreon experience worthwhile for you?

Pace yourself - this is a "full feature length" FranLab! I'm going deep into these cameras for a total shootout comparing all features inside and out. And soldering! How could I get into soldering in a video all about cameras? And taking and developing photos! So much to see and do - So FranLab. Enjoy!

I just wanted to extend my appreciation to all of you for supporting what I do and hanging in there with me through the rough times. As of today there are 728 of you and every single one of you are responsible for making FranLab happen. I do spend way too much time and make too many videos simply trying to hold all this together, and the last thing that I want is for any patron to think that their support is unappreciated. This is why I make sure to personally thank every singl...

Hello Video Level 101 Patrons!
The premiere exclusive live broadcast I did last week caught many of you - well, most of you - off guard. The video has only 30 views but there are 332 of you so what can I do for the 90% of you that missed the broadcast? I am in Philadelphia which is -5hrsGMT so 21hrsGMT seemed to be the ideal time to get most of you while we are all awake. But let me know if I am missing anything with time or notices. Is there an advantage for a weekday ...

I need to do some work on the RCA Victor 45-EY-3 45rpm 'desktop jukebox' record player that I highlighted in my 2017 video about the 45rpm record, and I talk about the value of played-to-death thrift shop records. Enjoy!

The high fidelity recording of the quite low-fi DECtalk Evatone demo flexidisc from 1984 seen in Viewer Mail 6. The origins of the very familiar voice we all know are not evident in the demo, but we do get a glimpse into how DEC intended the system to be used. In retrospect synthesized speech automated voicemail seems creepy... hey - how did Stephen Hawking get my number and why is he crank calling me? Enjoy!

TEST... This is only a test. Please do not adjust your set. Low frame rate live feed experiment. Like a slide show, but live. Well, honestly all slide shows would be live... but you know what I mean. I hope.

Live broadcast test was a fail. I spent a few days in preparation creating the multimedia for the live broadcast show and configuring the new computer and software..... but sadly, the new "streaming" laptop which I had gotten for the express purpose of live streaming I found in truth can do nothing of the sort. Just a joke! That's what I get trying to do this kinda stuff on the cheap (within budget). It is clear that I need vastly more processing power for live full...

Hello Everybody! A lot is going on in the background at FranLab right now and though I have not wanted to be in front of the camera these past weeks I am working feverishly every day on a number of simultaneous projects. I have published a couple videos recently on the ongoing clock project, and that one needs one good final push to put it all together. I am also midway through another project that I had hoped to have completed last week for the 49th anniversary of ...

I'm still putting time into completing the clock project. Here I'm putting the finishing touches to the interior of the case by adding the PCB supports and some flanges that will align the back piece and keep it in nice tight register when opening and closing the back of the clock. I've also completed the final shaping and sanding and will be putting the finish on it this week. One of many projects running simultaneously in several locations - the new reality of FranLab 2018!

I find that the best way to deal with an emotionally difficult time is to throw one's self into a very difficult project with a punishing timeline. I found these genuine Apollo era Xmas tree switches that apparently came from an aviation graveyard and seem to have spent decades exposed to the elements - but they are gasket sealed so I am going to clean them up and put them into a new art project piece that I have been working on this week (along with a couple of other ongoing projects). &n...

I have to take some time from the camera to deal with the passing of my beloved companion of 9 years, Missy Cat. She was a unique soul, with a true lion heart. I often called her Micro Tiger.... she was so proud to be a cat. I knew that she would never want to be anything but who she was. So proud.
She was with me through some of the worst days of my life.... and she was always there for me. She was my best friend - a lab cat in the truest sense...

In this video I show a build for a utility cart I needed for my lathe. I decided to try pocket joining and do the build with hand tools to find out how easy it would be for anyone to use this method. I detail the process from start to finish and throw in a few tips I have learned along the way. Enjoy!
