34. Show and Tell

A/N: Hello! Thundamoo here. Sorry this chapter is a day late, but in my defense this chapter ended up over ten thousand words long, which is a new record for Bioshifter and the second-longest chapter I've ever written, so... woo. Anyway, enjoy!

"Wow," Ida says, staring at the red-orange mess of stomach acid and unchewed finger bits splattered all over her jean skirt. "Rude."

"I'm sorry," I sputter, the aftertaste...

"Begrudging admittance: you are surprisingly capable of following extremely basic instructions."

"Instructions clear," Kagiso grunts, shrugging slightly. "Easy to understand."

"Nonetheless, do not attempt repairs you cannot obey exactly," Sela presses. "Repeat: do not attempt repairs you cannot obey exactly. Additional repairs require precision beyond organic capability. Additional repairs require pairing and tying wires. Do not allow wires to interfere with each other. E...

Subscription Billing!

Oh geez, I'm getting a lot of messages asking me to change to Subscription Billing, and looking into it I have to say that it makes a lot more sense.

What does this mean, you ask? It's pretty simple, actually! Basically, you don't get charged on the first of the month anymore, you'll get charged on the date that you joined. So if you join my Patreon on the 11th of the month, you'll be charged on the 11th of next month, and so on. It's um, how a lot of people already expect Patreon to ...

I am sick.

I went to the dentist to have a tooth pulled yesterday and for obvious reasons that really sucked, but to make things even more exciting I'm feeling sick as hell today, so I guess I caught something. Weeee.

Anyway I feel like garbage and so yet again there's going to be a chapter delay for Vigor Mortis, and possibly for Bioshifter depending on how soon I get over this. I am so sorry.

32. Nothing Like You

So it turns out that while rapidly accelerating to terminal velocity is absolutely terrifying, simply traveling at terminal velocity is not. The instinctive terror of falling only activates in response to acceleration, not speed. I knew this already, of course; that's part and parcel to the basic experience of motor vehicles. Somehow, though, I assumed falling off the edge of the world riding a fuzzy dragon would be less… boring.

The occasional slight changes in spee...

A/N: Sorry for the excessive delay, everyone. This chapter fought the hell out of me and I'm still quite disappointed in it, but perfect is the enemy of good and all that. We're back now. Enjoy.

"Well, the game doesn't sound too difficult," Penelope muses, rubbing her chin. "Rather straightforward rules, really."

"Yeah, you're not actually supposed to hurt people, though, so make sure to retain plausible deniability or things could get bad."

31. Bird Mode

A/N: Hello! I'm back! Sorry this chapter is so late, I was up until 4am finishing it last night and passed out before I could edit it. I've been thinking, lately: I really hate using bold text for written words in Bioshifter, because I think it's way better if bold is kept exclusive to spell names. Unfortunately, I have very, very few options for other ways to represent writing. The best one I've found is using a different font, but Patreon doesn't support View Post

Chapter Delay

Sorry guys, I bit off more than I can chew. Due to the unexpected workload of releasing Bioshifter on Royal Road (it takes a lot of time and attention to release a book, who knew) plus a recent horrifying personal revelation that mentally knocked me on my ass, I need to take a rest and skip the VM chapter this week. Possibly also Monday's Bioshifter chapter, depending on how quickly I recover.

I'll aim for two VM chapters next week (like I'm supposed to be doing anyway) but since VM cha...

Status confirmed: this problem is way too big for a stupid little Hannah to handle on her own. I whip out my phone and call Ida.

"She's my sister," I answer, shrugging, "in the same way that The One Below All is my brother. I didn't just fuse with any old soul, I fused with a sapient portal to the universe mana comes from."

I release some of that mana from my hand as a demonstration, showing her the annihilation effect. She won't know what that is and she can't use mana sight with knowledge of magic having been removed from her soul, ...

Kagiso hugs me tightly, almost cracking my chitin as the tears stream slowly down my carapace. The paladin and the Chaos mage talk in the background, exchanging little niceties, assurances that they don't intend to fight, hesitant and barely believed. It doesn't really go anywhere until the subject abruptly changes.

"How much was lie?" Kagiso asks quietly.

Helen and Hagoro both turn to look at her, because even a whisper from Kagiso demands attention right now. There's a horrid te...

A/N: It's me! Hi! Gosh, my chapters keep getting later and later. But I'll have you know I didn't take a break for this one, I actually worked through my scheduled day off to get it out and it STILL ended up late because fuck this arc, it's so hard to write god damnit. I think it's worth it, though. I'm not unhappy with this arc like I kind of was on the Baldone/Ars arc, which just felt rushed to me....

It doesn't take us long to be ready to depart. As Sindri promised, the four of us are out of our room and waiting by the bridge at dawn. Kagiso yawns, stretching like a cat as morning's first rays of light wash over the multi-layered city. We're far from the only people up and about this early, the main road already full of noisy merchants and rowdy customers. Together we're waiting for that paladin cultist, Hagoro. I'm really worried about meeting him, but I know my friends will hav...

A/N: Hello everyone! Content warnings for this chapter ahead! Don't read the rest of this bolded message if you don't want any spoilers. I mean it. Just skip to the chapter. Okay is everybody gone except the people who want content warnings? Awesome. This chapter has panic attacks, and it talks about rape. Nothing in this chapter is sexually explicit, but the topic comes up, particularly as a comparison to Sindri's mind control magic. Read safely, friends! Also, don't tell the VM-only...

A/N: Haha! Hey! You thought I missed this week, didn't you? Thankfully not this time. I actually "finished" this chapter last night, but my beta readers encouraged me to add more so I ended up delaying and writing more on my day off. I think it's worth it, though! Gosh, can you remember back when Vigor Mortis started and the average chapter length was like 2500 words? Now the average is like, twice that at least. Wild. Anyway, enjoy the late chapter!

It takes a minute for me to register that the smashing noise and clatter of ceramic is because I just punched a hole in the bathroom wall.

I barely even felt it. My chitinous knuckles and feet can feel things, certainly, but the sharp shards of hard-fired clay would hurt a human hand, and the lack of pain—even the dull kind of pain I'd expect from punching a wall without breaking it—causes a few seconds of confused disconnect as my rage-fueled brain catches up with...

24. Friends (Redux)

A/N: Hey everyone! Thundamoo here. I recently started lamenting that I named soul magic "Anima" in this story instead of "Pneuma," since Pneuma means 'soul' and also 'breath,' and there are obviously a lot of parallels between the two in Bioshifter. Then I remembered that I'm the author and I have retcon powers. So Anima magic has been renamed Pneuma magic. I'm probably not going to go back and change the old chapters (because editing Patreon...

Bad Day. Brain No Work.

Hnng. No VM chapter this week. Sorry. I have progress on it, I have things planned out, but mental health took a dip these past couple days and it isn't coming out. Sorry.

Since this seems to keep happening, I'll make it up to you in the only way I really have: I'll post some more Bioshifter chapters for the Orphan Soul tier. I know the higher tiers already get Bioshifter chapters and so this is useless to them, but... well, uh. Sorry. It's all I got. I could post some fanart and ...

23. And I Feel Fine

The day's travels are actually pretty fun, all things considered. Sindri's new tamed animal is a tiger-lizard-weasel thing that Kagiso decided to name Bulupunu, which I'm pretty sure means something like 'bald moron.' She named him this after I declared I wanted to try riding him, and in her defense Bulupunu did kind of turn out to be pretty uncomfortable to sit on. His huge, sinuous body is covered in small, rough scales that would probably tear up my skin if I had any. It feels fine on my c...

The goddess smiles a faceless grin as she takes my breath. It is a joyful smile, though not at all a kind one.

I recognize the goddess' presence as a simple fact of reality, the same as I know my heart beats in my chest even when I'm not feeling for a pulse. She's here, right in front of my face, drawing in the air from my lungs and leaving me breathless. Yet she's barely a consideration as my eyes focus on the knife in front of me, the threat, the danger that I only have one w...

We don't really have the resources to offer reconstruction aid to Baldone at this juncture."

[Frustrated Thundamoo Noises]

Writing Vigor Mortis is really difficult. I've been working on this one chapter since Thursday, both before and after the Bioshifter chapter that came out the other day, and it's still a slog to get through.

I'm still probably going to need more time.

I could blame a lot of things for this. The surgery, my constantly fluxuating mental state, and yeah, they're definitely all reasons this is happening. But honestly, the biggest one is that the recent set of chapters have...

Bone marrow is one of the most delicious things I've ever tasted.

The smooth, buttery texture, creamy and savory and sweet, will live in my memories forever. Not because I've never had it before; I've crunched on quite a few bones since being human first became a past-tense situation, but these are special. These are a lot sweeter than any other bones I've tasted. They're honestly the best I've ever had the pleasure to eat.

They come from a person.

Hey everyone! Quick update. On Saturday I started experiencing some of the worst pain I've ever felt in my life concentrated around my abdomen, so like a sensible person I went to the emergency room and they pretty much just went 'yep, you need an appendectomy.'
