After wrapping up recording for ToD we got the honor to play at KEXP which had always been a dream of mine since moving to Seattle. We even got to play at their old space before moving to the nicer and bigger location. There was a lot of history at that old studio so I was excited. Unfortunately, I got super sick that day with flu-like symptoms and whatnot. It started to hit me right as we were doing the KEXP thing. You can see it in my face in that first photo (which was taken in our van out...

I have a complicated relationship with pride. Growing up, the cultural message of “be yourself” always left me blank and alienated. Wasn’t the command itself a drawing away from the self? It demanded a clearly-defined, parceled-off identity, ready for showing off like a new car. Ambiguity and mystery, conditions I’ve always felt were essential for my own existence, were the enemies of pride. As I entered into queer communities as a teenager, I never desired any sort of “coming out...

After recording about half of Teens of Denial we take a break to film the music video for Something Soon out on Bainbridge Island. Gotta love that view of Seattle from the ferry.
I don’t remember exactly how it went down, but Matador connected us with this film crew that maybe knew someone who owned this cabin on Bainbridge that was being torn down soon. So they figured it might be a cool idea to trash the thing before they tore it down. We happily obliged.
I took as many pics a...

AK: After recording the boys head to Steve Fisk's home studio to mix Teens of Denial! Again, we are skipping in time past the filming of the Something Soon music video to keep all of the recording posts grouped. This way we can debrief about the recording process in our first stream chat.
Unfortunately there aren't a ton of pictures here because we really only stayed in one room to mix. As illustrated by the few photos we do have, the mixing process can be tiresome. Mixing is a monotono...

This month's solo stream will take place Friday, June 23, at 4 PM PST. I have a vague plan of attempting to play through all of Teens of Denial in honor of this month's archives, but will deviate if the mood overtakes me or if everyone gets bored. The stream will take place on Youtube Live; there will be a link posted here, and it will be archived afterwards. See you there!

AK: Into the studio we go to record the #1 hit album, Teens of Denial! This was recorded in a couple studios but we started at Soundhouse in Seattle over in the Ballard neighborhood. It’s a small but cozy studio.
The first few pics are of a show we had at Chop Suey (I guess around this time?) with Naked Giants opening. Foreshadowing? Then there’s a picture of my friend Sidney painting the iconic TF logo onto my kit.
But I digress. Soundhouse was an interesting spot. It was sup...

Introducing a new series hosted by me, Will! I did the first one of these impromptu on our Discord and it went well, so I'm hoping to make it into a recurring deal. I'll select a musical subject I'm interested in, and together we'll group-watch videos related to it, chat and expand our musical minds.
This week: Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, who passed away earlier this month, wrote music in the fields of spectralism, serialism, and musique concrète. My knowledge on these genres is p...

Follow up from yesterday: what day of the week would you prefer streams to happen? (Currently it’s looking like 4-6 pst is the best time slot to operate in.) Also, as posted - streams will remain available afterward for anyone who can’t tune in.

Greetings patrons, thanks so much for being here! I assume we've got a wide spread of time zones represented here, so I wanted to get a sense of when the best time would be to set scheduled streams & performances. What time of the day are you most likely to be free to tune in? (You can find out what PST relates to in your timezone via google or https://www.worldtimebuddy.com/ ). We will also do a separate poll to figu...

It’s May, and the laurels outside my apartment have started to bloom. I was surprised to see bees buzzing around the fresh blossoms, because I never noticed their blossoms from last year finally peacing out. For months, they just got blacker, thinner, and deader. They clung on through the long winter, and I did too, riding out what I came to think of as a “rainy season”, as my body slowly figured out ways of dealing with the new histamine sensitivity I developed last year. Actually, I d...
