October Newsletter

The first week of September we spent at Temple of the Trees, the studio where the rest of the album was recorded. The dim, slightly funereal look of the studio had become a homey environment in the process. A big wooden door, repurposed from an old church, stands at the entrance to the studio; at the end of the day, or on a break, we would swing it open and be blinded by the sun or clouds of Seattle sky. The daily commute felt a bit like going back to school - I got used to packing a lunch. W...

From Richmond, we headed farther south to play our first show in Athens, GA. Most of us have been fans of The Elephant 6 bands from that area, so we were excited to check out the music scene there. We played at a cool venue called the Georgia Theatre, and I remember meeting one of the members of REM's son slightly before we played. He seemed really cool, and it turned out to be really great night. We really enjoyed our time in Athens because it seemed like the perfect ...

In February we had a half day or so of studio time booked that coincided with some of the last bit of filming for the Tidal documentary. The Dos Rios film crew came by for the morning and got some footage of us recording Stop Lying to Me which has since been reworked a bunch, but it's interesting to go back and see where it was at the time. No idea what happened to those recordings, but parts of them ended up on the Tidal doc.

A week or two later we headed ...

Heading out from London, we went back to mainland Europe and drove towards Hamburg, Germany. A little north from the city was this tiny beach town called Weissenhauser Strand that was putting on this Rolling Stone festival over the weekend. I remember we stayed at this nice resort hotel that must have been at a discount due to the cold off-season. We got to the festival early the next day, and everyone was super impressed with the fresh squeezed orange juice machine they had...

After a week or two off from the previous tour, we were excited to play a couple of hometown shows at a familiar venue. We got booked for two consecutive nights at the Showbox Market, which also happened to be one of the venues I occasionally picked up shifts at between tours. It was at a time when the venue's future was in jeopardy, because developers were planning on tearing it down for some new condos. But a big portion of the Seattle community was doing everything they c...

September Newsletter: Building a Bridge

I’ve lost count of the number of LPs released under the Car Seat Headrest name. It is a blessing to be able to produce, but making art has never changed or saved my life. Consuming art by others has changed my life, creating a bridge that spans the gulf between others and myself. Making music of my own has been more of a nervous tic for me, a way of turning uncomfortable feelings into an object of merit. I hoped that my songs would help others recognize things in me I was otherwise...

In the middle of August we got this pretty last-minute offer to play this park concert series in Nashville. I remember due to the late scheduling Grant and Gianni couldn't make it, but we decided to try it out with the five of us. It was in the middle of the Public Square Park right downtown and we were the second of three bands playing that night. We were kinda worried it was going to rain because it was pretty overcast while we were setting up, but it managed to hold out a...

In the beginning of July, we had a show in Chicago at Millennium Park. It was at this beautiful amphitheater structure with a metal webbing draping over the crowd towards one end of a massive downtown park. We loaded everything in onto the stage that looked like it was built for full orchestras and symphonies, and during the soundcheck we could see a couple people from the park's crew taking readings around the stage to make sure we were within the decibel limits. I don't th...

After London, we drove down to mainland Europe at about the halfway point of the tour. We checked into our hotel in Brussels that night, with the rest of the following day off before the show there to explore. It was our first time staying in the historic downtown area so there was plenty to see around the Grand-Place. We all got together to grab some local waffles for breakfast and walked along the cobblestone streets. I remember checking out the famous Manneken Pis fountai...

Performance Stream Poll

Due to the stuff that makes up our lives, we won't be able to do a full band stream on a weekend evening this month. I'm running a poll to see whether y'all would rather catch a full-band stream earlier in the week, or a solo stream on a Friday. If it's a full-band stream, we'll likely do tracks from the Zoo set, along with some requests. If it's a solo stream, I'll do CSH "classics" with a few requests. Click on your favorite horse...

In early May we headed to New York to play a really cool spot in Brooklyn. It was called the Market Hotel and was right off the Myrtle Ave stop on the JMZ line. I remember it was a bit of a struggle bringing all the gear up the stairs, but once we saw it the room the view made it all worth it. The triangular room came to a point towards the stage where a couple big windows looked out to the elevated train track. And every few minutes the train would pass by while gently shaking the venue. ...

July was a long month! I started it on the east coast, visiting family in Virginia, then heading to Anthrocon in Pittsburgh. Frankly, that con was too big for me. I do best with one-on-one interactions, and there was very little time for that at AC. I saw a lot of FOMO expressed from people who couldn’t make it, but I also saw a lot of FOMO even among attendees, as people rushed around trying to make it to every event that looked like a good time. I’d prefer an event that looks a bit bori...

So we got back from Australia in March and met back up with Mark and Paul from Dos Rios to finish up part 1 of the Tidal doc they were filming for us. They had recently finished the Nervous Young Inhumans music video and previously gotten some practice space footage of us going over some songs, but they needed the interview portion in a less noisy environment. Andrew's garage was hard to pass up cause it was free, so we all took the bus into Madison Valley to do the sh...

So instead of braving the mountain passes in the middle of February again, we opted for the summery weather in the southern hemi and booked another run down in Australia. I remember this time I had an unexpected family thing back on the east coast right beforehand, so it set me up for a long, stressful journey from Charlottesville to Atlanta and then to L.A. where I met up with the other guys at the gate before we all took the 15 hour flight to Sydney together. So yeah I thi...

So in February we kicked off a little promotional run for the new album. First on the docket was making a short trip down to Los Angeles to showcase some of the new material. I remember we got this air bnb house that seemed like the best bang for the buck considering the expanded lineup. The ad listed it to accommodate eight people, so we thought it would be our best bet. But we realized when we got there that two of the fold-out beds were locked up with a couple bike locks haha. It too...
