So this morning I reopened the project files for a top-down action RPG engine that I had... basically finished??... a couple years ago at the height of my gamedev aspirations. Real world financial woes beat it out of me.
But I looked at this and thought... what if enemies that are smaller than you ran away from you, and you eat em when you catch em? And bigger enemies chase you, and you gotta get big enough to eat them too??

I wanted to name him Fitzwilliam but Nino's not down with it... he's a jealous romantic rival of Jimbo's who kidnaps Nino, and you'll play as Jimbo and chase him down and face him in boss fights!

I know at least one element I want in the game is picking up powerups to get beefier - that'll be the first "transformation" element I put in and base the first stage around. You pick up protein shakes, hunks of meat, etc to bulk up, and if you take damage you shrink down a level. There'll be enemies and barriers to punch through, and a boss fight that'll be easier if you're beefier.

An early artistic & aesthetic influence of mine was Space Ace / Dragons Lair - specifically, getting to switch from a mousy nerd to a hunky action hero laid the groundwork for loving beefy dudes later in life. One of my goals for the final game is to have at least one (1) animated cutscene, probably in the intro.
And if I can really get into a groove with animation, I'll do a little Space-Ace-esque clip every time you go up a level in muscles and your sprite changes.

One of my resolutions for 2019 is to finish a game of some kind, be it visual novel, platformer, whatever. Using a Fall reference photo, but I took a little longer than I meant to on this YCH so it's not very fall-y outside anymore, so I advanced the clock a little on the season with bare trees, but still a little green on the ground.
