Depending on the situation, Standards are often chosen to be distant units. 

Over the course of a four year stint at a base, a unit could be expected to be on sentry duties a few times. 

Distant are very very easy targets and are often taken out for the sake of taking one out. 

In terms of BFC operations, it means nothing. The expended unit is tossed into an Azog and a fresh unit replaces the expended.
