Robot Master Redesigns: Artistic Process (Part 1)

The process behind making my various Mega Man robot master designs and redesigns was interesting, so I thought it'd make for a good series of posts for Patreon!

The primary goal for every single one was to, obviously, mimic the design style of official Mega Man as closely as possible. I started by analyzing similar-styled designs to what I wanted to go for, which in Glacier Woman's case were Splash Woman, Tundra Man, Star Man, and Shadow Man.

I started first with the old 2015 design, tho...

Phantom Man

The final Robot Master of the set! I didn't expect to change anything about his design, but I did wind up tweaking his proportions to make him feel more fleshed out, as well as adjusting the reds on his palette to either be that darker purple, or a new gold highlight color that makes him stand out a lot stronger.

Earth Man

I lacked a better name to give this guy, so he remained Earth Man! Equipped with a diamond-cutting laser in the palm of his hands, he's got one of the toughest weapons available! The biggest design change was in redistributing his color palette and making his head more humanoid.

Fan Man

I normally save him for last, but I knew he'd be getting a major design overhaul this time around, so I skipped ahead to Fan Man here for his redesign. While it pained me to throw out a lot of the old design aspects, unfortunately, they just weren't Mega Man-style enough! So, here's the new and improved Fan Man!

Steel Woman

I jumped around a bit in my set ordering, doing #6 fifth. Anyways, I completely revamped the former-Iron Man into being a large, bulky female robot whose primary attack is the infamous screen-shaking jump that some other robot masters use. 

I've never been happy with her former designs, but this one finally has me satisfied.

Nature Woman

Another design update! I used other Mega Man robots such as Treble and Pluto to adapt Nature Woman's more animalistic design elements to being properly in a Mega Man style. I added more tweaks to her as well, including giving her hands and spiked tips on her leaf blades.

I considered getting rid of her ponytail, but then I remembered that Zero exists.

Static Man

The first complete design overhaul of the set is the newly-dubbed Static Man! His former "Shock Man" designs were neat, but not necessarily befitting a Mega Man boss. And sure, unique elements shouldn't be completely ignored, but I've needed more Mega Man flair, and a lot of what made Shock Man unique actually was also in another robot master in the set, so I'm saving all that for him later down the line. 

I do think, though, that I should probably give Static man some bolts on the sides ...

Flare Man

The second robot master of the set, Flare Man hasn't changed TOO much since 2015, since that design already was a massive leap away from his original design. The new art is a lot more dynamic, though, and certain proportions/angles have been adjusted.

Glacier Woman

I've decided to undertake a new project of re-redesigning my set of 8 custom Mega Man Robot Master characters! I want to make them feel as close to official Mega Man designs as possible.

Here's the first of the set, Glacier Woman, alongside comparisons to her 2011 and 2015 designs.
