Preview - The Next Alternate Class!

Hey all! Been working on this one in the background for a little while now, and I think it's finally at a point where I have a preview that's worth presenting to you all.

This preview is Patron Exclusive for now, so please keep all details to this post (or the Patron Lounge if you're on Discord). I don't want to get people's hopes up!

This is a very early draft of the Alternate Wizard - so let me know what you think!

Maybe a class feature like the base bard gets to learn spells from any list, but rather here just any school? Granted I dont really wanna stick my fingers into your process. I really like how tight and clean your base class features are. Afraid my suggestion might be too hamfisted. It might be fine with the first subclass feature anyway, although giving up free spells is rough

Ive been working on my old wizard and your signature spell mechanic is just what I was thinking on. Glad to see it here!

Would it be possible to address how the main limiter on learning more spells is money? I feel like it would be more immersive and would be better for all styles of campaigns if learning spells required some kind of series of skill checks or something.

I've been frustrated with how generic wizards feel as a class. I realize that the tailoring comes from the selection of spells, but the spell list isn't tagged by anything other than school (as opposed to games like PF2e where you have a variety of tags). However, this is an interesting approach to lean in on the schools, which honestly I've never found that compelling in the past. Very interested to see where this goes!

This is definitely something I've got my eye on - I will probably end up modifying the schools of some low level spells, we will see!

Really like the idea of mastering spell schools, I think it does a great job reducing wizard's capacity to take some of the best spells in the game. I am a little concerned for low level play, especially lvl 1-4, where some schools have extremely few combat spells, making it hard to balance in and out of combat ability (mainly illusion at lv1, and also abjuration). I think the extra mastered school at level 2 from subclass works to deal with this, but I do feel the system is a bit too restrictive, as some schools are pretty much objectively better than others (evocation for example). Of course this could also be dealt with by introducing/modifying spells in the extra spell doc, which would be great to see.

Every time you drop something I have at least 10 mins straight of “ oh my god …..of course! This is a genius way to do this”. Great work, makes me fall in love with D&D again!
