Three are better than one - Samsung TV Repair

Just a quick video for you.  I mentioned I was working on this in the last little update.  And here it is.  It's short, but hopefully interesting!

Three are better than one - Samsung TV Repair

Comments

I'd love to travel back in time and tell my younger self from like 25 years ago. Hey in the future you'll watch a dude repair TV's on the internet and enjoy it and he has 3 small CRT TVs and you'll be slightly jealous.... just to see my own face =)

Paul Jacobson

Well, it is no doubt the CRT's day was up. It did happen way faster than I expected it to, though. I remember there was a time I was in Fry's Electronics and the computer monitors and TVs were about 50/50 CRT and LCD. Then I went in just about a month later and all CRTs were gone completely. I couldn't find one anywhere. I was like "wow, that transition happened really fast!"

Beautiful TVs. I think we were mislead about flat panel TVs and how amazing they were purported to be. People just trashed their CRTs without a second thought. I do wish manufacturers of modern flatscreens would put some effort into making them work better with older hardware. Ditch the awful motion smoothing and replace it with a decent upscaler to start with.

Glad to see you're feeling sufficiently better after your surgery to make the video.

The new pattern on the wall looks great, by the way!

Mid-90s budget Samsung TVs seem to be bulletproof. I don't know about the US but in the UK they made a larger version of this with a 21" screen but still mono sound and although there was Scart it was still composite-only. Basic spec but this thing lasted forever. About 5 years as a main living room TV then close to another 10 in a bedroom with daily use. It finally got thrown out when analogue TV ended and it was deemed too big to keep for a monitor, but still in perfect working order. Wished I kept it now!

Very nice. I was kinda hoping to see you running PETSCII robots 128 on all three monitors (one on RGB, one on RF, and one on Composite) just for a laugh. But great video still, and that is indeed a cute little TV.

Glad to hear David! I got zapped once years ago, and learned my lesson, so when I saw you had the CRT open, that was the first thing that went through my mind.

As I'm sure you've seen in my previous videos, I usually discharge the CRT. However, this time I did not because I could see that I didn't need to touch anywhere near the high voltage part of the monitor. Even on the primary PCB, that whole side of it near where I was working was low-voltage. So I just remained careful not to touch anything outside of that area. That being said, this is a product of the late 90s and almost certainly has circuitry to discharge it automatically. Granted, if I were going to remove the tube or PCB, I would still discharge to be on the safe side.

Interesting video, hope you discharged that CRT before messing around with it, and anyone else who feels like tinkering around with an old TV should be forewarned as you can get shocked badly if you aren't careful!

Always a good idea to attempt a repair before throwing something out.

Get one more of them, and have them all lined up in a square like old trade shows used to do when displaying new games or products XD

Keep up the great work!!!
