Petscii Robots invades the C128, Amiga, NES, and More!

I finally started feeling well enough finish up this video the last few days.  And here it is.   I still need to come up with a thumbnail and then I'll release it tomorrow.

Petscii Robots invades the C128, Amiga, NES, and More!

I'm sure we could do that. The biggest issue would be available memory for the code. Another thing I'm not inclined to change at this point but I realized since the video: I should have made TAB the toggle robots key and Shift-TAB the color/mono map key. It just makes more sense in my head now, but I rushed through it at the time.

I would love to buy an NES or SNES port of it since I don't own any old computers.

You pretty much have to have a second monitor, or a monitor like the Commodore 1084 that has a switch that can toggle back and forth. There is no provision for viewing the map on the main screen. Keep in mind the 128 version was the first version to even have a map option at all. The Plus/4 version ended up copying that idea but moving it to the main screen. I have been meaning to talk to Scott Robison and see if it might be possible to update the game at some point so that it could display the map like the Plus/4 version does.

I have bought the digital C128 version, but as I do not have a dual screen setup, then it seems impossible to view the map? Isn't there a possibility for that, in a single screen mode?

This is super exciting. I love seeing the proliferation of this game, it is a lot of fun to play. I will have to get an Apple II, Atari and eventually the Amiga port. I do have a C128 but I haven't had the time to do anything with it as of late. Now... maybe a Linux port ;) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

These are looking great. I sincerely hope you get a butt load of orders for these :) great work from everyone. Although I'm now regretting not getting c128 a few years ago when I could afford one. =)

sounds fine by me

Awesome

Well, I'm still waiting on the box and manuals from the print shop. Anyway, I could only knock off $6 from the price, because that's what I pay for the SNES adapters.

The 8-Bit Guy

Thanks for the reply. Let me know what works for you.

Kevin Gonzalez

Yes, the Amiga was a re-write.. sort of. He converted the 6502 code to C one sub-routine at a time. And then re-write parts of it in 68000 for speed. So it's the same structure as the original game. The C128 has one map that is exclusive. "River Death"

The 8-Bit Guy

I'm sure we could work something out.

The 8-Bit Guy

Is there a chance of getting a box version of the C128 port of the game, without the SNES adapter? Would love to have the box version of the game, but I already have the SNES adapter, since I bought the original release of game.

Kevin Gonzalez

The Amiga port and 68k in general requires a complete rewrite, correct? And are any levels exclusive to a platform? C64 has 10, Plus/4 has 12, C128 has 13. are #11 and #12 the same?

The 8-Bit Theory

Yep. That's more or less the trouble we had. I didn't think the game would look right with 2x2 tiles because the play area would fill such a small part of the screen. And it would be harder to draw those tiles to fit our needs at that size as well. I'll go into detail about this issue in the next video on the topic.

The 8-Bit Guy

A little known fact about the NES (unless you code for it) is that palette assignments for the background are done in 2x2-tile chunks. Combine that with 3x3-tile artwork and yeah... that's gonna run into problems! You'd either have to make the entire background a single 4-colour palette or redraw ALL of the tile sets to function as 2x2 instead of 3x3. :P

REALLY looking forward to the SNES version! Will a digital download version be available for it? I'd like to run it off my Everdrive flash cart.

Andrew Dousay

Fortunately it is available for download now, with the physical product to be delivered as soon as possible after the boxes and manuals arrive.

That dual monitor setup for the C128 is really impressive, I just ordered a copy. I can't wait until it's ready and is shipped! Great job. Also the other versions are really impressive. To verify are you going to release the console versions on cartridges? If so, I'll be picking up another copy of this down the road. Again, amazing job by everyone involved with this.
