Modern Horizons 2 - Information
Added 2021-03-11 03:04:55 +0000 UTCThought i would get some people a nice little poke on a beautiful wednesday night :-)
Modern Horizons 2 will have Collector Boxes - These are going to be incredibly expensive, i would estimate $400-$600 price range. In addition, i expect tight quantities and instant sellouts, due to Flashy Fetchlands with full art.
Modern Horizons 2 will have Set booster Boxes - I expect these to be simliar to Draft boxes but with a $200+ price point
Wizards/Papa Hasbro knows the market is booming and they are going to absorb as much cash as possible.
I believe this will continue to anger a lot of long term mtg players/collectors/investors.
I also believe this type of behavior is going to continue to fuel massive growth in other card games like Pokemon / FaB / FoW / Weiss / Yugioh / Digimon etc....
The hardcore mtg investors will continue to stick with RL cards and Sealed product of all ages. It will continue to push higher but at a slower pace.
In 2021, inflation and price increases will be the continued path.
In my opinion $200 Monarch 1st edition boxes dont seem bad
In my opinion $150 Pokemon boxes dont seem bad
In my opinion $100 Force of Will bxoes dont seem bad
In my opinion $500 Modern Horizons 2 Collector boxes SEEM BAD
The reality is, i expect magic to lead the way with continued price increases in all product lines.
I firmly believe, if magic the gathering was managed properly with print runs and secondary market choices, Flesh and Blood would NOT have grown as fast or aggressivly.
Can you imagine a Flesh and Blood Grand Prix Vegas Event in 2022 with LSS and every store and content creator attending....well I can.

I can’t buy anymore ce boxes until I see the Pringle go away it bothers me aesthetically terribly
2021-03-16 09:51:12 +0000 UTCVip felt like a shot across the bow against Pokémon
2021-03-16 09:39:16 +0000 UTCI should have enough for 50%

2021-03-14 20:10:59 +0000 UTCRudy - do you think you'll have enough Monarch boxes to go around for all the patrons when you get them? I'm guessing there'll be a ton of Monarch 1st editions this time around as Legend Story is planning to pump out a lot of product (just like Fallen Empires I guess LOL)

2021-03-14 19:01:38 +0000 UTCI am knees deep in Pokémon for the past 2 years. I slept on MRG for several years and just now at a point in my life to get back in.

2021-03-13 18:30:49 +0000 UTCI slept on flesh and blood just because I can't keep up with Pokemon.. Can't wait for his first offering!

2021-03-13 03:03:02 +0000 UTCDouble Masters is interesting. The EV is currently at $316 a box and selling below $300 still on some sites. So the Price to EV is above 100% and inverted meaning you can open a box and sell the singles for more than the box. But the box toppers are the key and I don't know what the swing in viability of the toppers is.
BrewCrew75
2021-03-13 02:11:07 +0000 UTCAre Double Masters even worth looking into?

2021-03-12 18:56:09 +0000 UTCFYI Amazon currently has Commander Legends collector booster boxes on sale for $200 plus tax... enjoy.

2021-03-12 18:54:13 +0000 UTCI still dont see anything on my distributors lists yet. I am sure Rudy will say something as soon as he sees something. I am on the road way to much to keep up, that and my tiny little shop is hard pressed to get any product right now.

2021-03-12 17:22:45 +0000 UTCI’m sure wizards will try to pull the expensive price at first or maybe they’ll go the opposite and put it out super cheap and then it’ll just sky rocket when people see what is available. Just like how some got time spiral for super cheap this might also be the case so it’s best to keep an eye on the market and movement. Most who already have fetchlands could care less but there are gonna be those who gotta have the flashy shit haha
Gold
2021-03-12 07:06:29 +0000 UTCit won't be $400-$600 for CEs. This is a bit far fetched as Rudy thinking Jeweled Lotus is $20. MH2 even has a prerelease just like standard this go around, but it'll be set boosters again.
2021-03-12 03:07:56 +0000 UTCI dug my entire collection for RL cards and found quite a few and had been buying some over 2020 to add to my collection (that I actually play...I know right!) and feel confident about that position for what I can afford. I can't afford any Power yet, or Juzam, Tabernacle, any of that heavy hitter Tier 1 stuff, hopefully someday...
2021-03-12 02:10:31 +0000 UTCFlesh and Blood...I'm a little scared of this one...I've asked around and no one I know that plays table top card games has heard of it except a few cardshop regulars who monitor this stuff, and that bothers me from an investment standpoint. I'm hoping it's not a flash in the pan, and fizzles out as people get bored and return to the big three, Magic, Pokemon, YuGioH
2021-03-12 02:08:13 +0000 UTCI'm still bloated with piles of collector packs/boxes, and waiting for the market to dry up on those...dunno, prices seem a bit stagnant on those.
2021-03-12 02:05:55 +0000 UTCJesus H, Collector edition MH2 for over $400??? That's insane for new release product, regular players can't afford that, and I can hear Tolarian Professor's head exploding. Honestly I'm not sure what WOTC and Hasbro is thinking here, last I checked only creepy investors and 3.6969% creepy investor ladies buy magic products for that high!
2021-03-12 02:04:44 +0000 UTCMagic might never die out. People collect comics from the 30s that have no use other than collectibility. So the game aspect of Magic could fizzle out but there will always been interest because of its historical presence. That said, I I know a few people Thatre selling out to buy into Flesh and Blood

2021-03-12 00:38:02 +0000 UTCHe’s said before he will be offering a kit in April around release time

2021-03-12 00:35:57 +0000 UTCYou heard it here first! Rudy was WRONG about the first collector boxes to reach $500+. MH2 comes in with the STEAL toppling Commander Legends. Also, personally, waiting to see the product before grabbing my pitchfork. Double Master VIP packs were a thing, and while expensive, people loved them. This could be a similar value situation. They could have very cool cards that make them worth the value. Or they could not and people stick to draft/set boxes.
2021-03-11 22:09:00 +0000 UTCI'm taking this as an official-unofficial announcement for 2022 and am now motivated to boost my subscriber count LOL
2021-03-11 21:13:51 +0000 UTCThey seem to be reprinting the fetch lands a lot. Way too much in my opinion.

2021-03-11 21:13:25 +0000 UTCRudy: How do you feel about $200 set boxes of modern horizons 2? Are you a buyer of that product?
Greg Jones
2021-03-11 19:32:17 +0000 UTCWe love it when you poke us Rudy.
2021-03-11 18:02:57 +0000 UTCWaiting for the day that people fully realize the low print run products from FoW and prices soar. It might be awhile, but that gives me more time to build my position!
Mason McCann
2021-03-11 16:35:05 +0000 UTCRudy: do you have any plans to sell first edition monarch boxes?
2021-03-11 15:29:03 +0000 UTCSo now I can divert my capital to other games, which I'll plan on doing. I know its going to be tough for 1st edition Monarch to build a position (just based on allocation amounts and demand) but if you start carrying Weiss Schwarz I'll definitely pick up a few of those. Looking at the upcoming releases - Puella Magica, Kaguya-sama and Fate/Stay Night Heaven's Feel Vol. 2 is far more interesting than watching the ever expanding types of products for each release Hasbro has - regular booster, set boxes, collectors edition, commander edition, etc. They should just flat out name a product - the cash grab and devastating reprint equity edition. I would at least then respect them for acknowledging what their customers know. WOTC used to be full of people who loved the game - hence the reserve list, the sets meming on their own stupidity/mistakes (unglued) and as far as I can tell it is now just run by people who are trying to maximize their bonuses and stock options.
2021-03-11 14:36:31 +0000 UTC100% disagree. to say magic hasnt been hurt is closing your eyes to reality. local lgs has seen a dropoff in the amount of mtg being bought. so many people i know including myself have stepped away from magic and moved into FAB, pokemon, weiss etc. nothing is special with mtg.
2021-03-11 13:52:36 +0000 UTCIf there is an event for FaB in Vegas...I will be there.

2021-03-11 12:43:45 +0000 UTCOnce the world opens back up fully and the government stops handing out free cash to everyone this will all calm down. We got a glimpse of it around the holiday and then boom $600 stimmys hit and product sales boomed again. It's no coincidence that RL cards jumped at the same time they handed everyone their checks. Now what will $1400 stimmys do to the collectible market???
Derek
2021-03-11 10:54:13 +0000 UTCAs someone who has gotten more collector packs then i should of. I refuse to get them flat out at these prices. Ill snag some set boxes and be happy and move on with life.
2021-03-11 08:14:25 +0000 UTC$100 Antiquities booster packs at FaB GP Vegas. Don’t be a Taco Timmy, Rudy.
Kenny Nguyen
2021-03-11 08:13:08 +0000 UTCOver the last year, I have bought a lot of overpriced new stuff even though deep down I knew that the money would have been better spent elsewhere. I'm done. Modern Horizon 2 can stay in the Amazon warehouse as they attempt to prop the price up. It won't be coming home with me.
2021-03-11 07:12:36 +0000 UTCThe problem (not really a problem) is that a lot of people are completionists at heart. You want that stamp of self-approval that a 100% of something gives you. Like completing a set or staying up to date with the game in general. Video games make it a cheaper feeling making whatever they feel to be 100% very attainable. Meanwhile, real life says not so fast, go collect 400+ unique cards 6 times every year or else fuck your 100% you only get 88%. And that bothers a lot of people at heart, even though it should feel terrific. Post-covid we will see paper magic come back strong. Just gotta keep taking it a day at a time and talk to family and friends on the phone while you can. Think of someone who you haven't talked to in a long time and just call them to catch up. Does it sound 99% awkward? Yes. Will you be glad you did anyways? Yeah, you will.
Andrew Schulz
2021-03-11 06:23:44 +0000 UTCI can’t wait for modern horizons 2 secret lair lol
Christopher
2021-03-11 06:15:45 +0000 UTCSo is magic dying lol. I’m getting a little tired of it. I’d rather pick up a dual land. They may have reached pretty close to their breaking point if this group of people is so negative about magic. Maybe time to rethink my type of involvement with magic.
Christopher
2021-03-11 06:14:15 +0000 UTCYeah, I can't imagine joining right now and trying to dive into that (hugely expensive) cardboard history. I'm neither an old-timer nor a whale, but I've certainly got a huge headstart on you: I've been collecting since 2010 and bought a bunch of RL before these recent spikes. I have probably at least 40k in cards (trying to get a playset of every card) and $50k in value. All of that, and yet.... collecting the full history of the game STILL seems unattainable. Not only is vintage flying into the stratosphere, but they're pumping out so much new stuff that I can't keep up with collecting all that, either!! Certainly can't collect both at once. All that to say, I definitely understand how it can lead to being overwhelmed.
David Brosseau
2021-03-11 06:13:05 +0000 UTCAgreed. I was SO glad to hear that Time Spiral Remastered skipped these. That was the correct move by WotC (although I bet it had to do with their production timeline and nothing to do with good intentions....). I think that some product lines just shouldn't have these, and Modern Horizons is one of those product lines. I mean, I'd be elated if NO product lines had these.... but standard and commander are plenty enough.
David Brosseau
2021-03-11 05:57:52 +0000 UTCI think it would be sooo awesome for Rudy to get to attend a GP where he's actually welcome. If only Magic knew the value they're missing out on with their antagonism....
David Brosseau
2021-03-11 05:51:27 +0000 UTCI think it's important to remember what fueled Pokemon. The effect influencers have is absolutely insane. Wether you like it or not, it's undeniable. Rudy mentioned in one video that he believes Magic will get the "Pokemon treatment" one day. Just imagine someone like Logan Paul cracking an Alpha box. It's semi stressful as someone who is new to Magic as, well, it really does feel bad joining the hobby after the price spikes. It also makes it feel like there is a time limit on how long you'll be able to buy older boxes at a semi reasonable price. On top of trying to learn the game, it's a lot to take in. Currently sitting on a FaB CoW case that I just so happened to buy quite literally a day before that big investor bought up a huge supply. Also sitting on an Amonkhet booster as I absolutely love the invocation cards, which is funny because what I gather that set was pretty ill received, which from what I also gather, tends to be a good sign for a boxes price in the long term. Oh, I also grabbed a FTV: Exiled after I heard Rudy mention it at the end of one of his videos. Been buying cheaper RL cards as well based solely on the artwork. There lots of cards available, but I notice that if you want NM cards some have a very limited supply. It's a very small collection overall, but there's so many cards and so much history I'm trying to not get overwhelmed. It's funny how as someone new to the hobby I'm actually able to spark feelings of nostalgia from the older cards just knowing how old they are and vaguely remembering seeing them in the LGS twenty years ago.
2021-03-11 05:27:56 +0000 UTCYea its been a weird scene in MTG lately with nothing really holding any sort of value in new stuff. FaB really captured that aspect well, hope it continues to offer something for everyone like they have been doing
steven jaco
2021-03-11 05:10:15 +0000 UTCI'm cracking a WTR box when it gets here and testing the game out. If I'm happy I'll crack an arcane box, a cow box, and a monarch box just to have fun - investment be damned. I'm getting burnt out on magic, doesn't feel like there's any value left and overall mechanics are becoming stale.

2021-03-11 04:53:13 +0000 UTCNothing to add, very well said.

2021-03-11 04:50:59 +0000 UTCReady for FAB GP Vegas already! 😍
2021-03-11 04:50:52 +0000 UTCIt's only speculation at this point. We don't know until we know

2021-03-11 04:40:48 +0000 UTCA FaB Grand Prix might be the ONLY reason for me to attend an event in Vegas. Hated banking conventions in Vegas but a gaming convention would be fun.

2021-03-11 04:37:24 +0000 UTCWhen hasbro made it known last year to the public that their only intent was to double the money made from magic what did we think was gonna happen. There will be a cliff edge that the sheeple wont jump off eventually. And wotc/hasbro will be made to change their ways... Or die. Maybe they really dont give a shit if the whole ship sinks. Maybe 30 years was a good enough run?? Its not going to 0 but at some point this kinda of shit is gonna cause a major shift for them. Eventually we wont care to buy it anymore, between shitty quality "premium" products and rushed out unplay tested game pieces it really almost feel they just want to run it into the ground on purpose. They just wanna see how much shit Timmys will eat before they puke. Im stoked for mh2, but unfortunately hasbro knows it 😥☹️
2021-03-11 03:50:31 +0000 UTCMagic is just draining at this point. Zendikar rising was a warning. Kaldheim is another. Time Spiral is already pulling back a little and the product isnt even out yet. If Strixhaven is following the trend it doesnt bodewell for MTG. Doesnt seem to matter how good the product is. People are burned out and drained. The excitement of the product release is so short that nowadays its over before the product is even released. They really need to slow it down and stop with the expensive stuff. In other news... all other tcgs are like gold right now. Pokemon is insane. FAB is insane. MTG is easy to find in the stores. Try looking for Pokémon.
Chris Datu
2021-03-11 03:44:34 +0000 UTCI'm getting pretty burnt on magic, even though I've been playing for only a couple years now. I really really want to get into FAB and am kicking myself for being so hesitant due to lack of local scene. I really feel quite idiotic now. I was hope to get one of those nice things you did with the playmats and hope to see one for monarch but the price hike and popularity is making those seem like unlikely...

2021-03-11 03:29:29 +0000 UTCIt's very disappointing to hear that's the direction wizards went with this product. I had hoped it would mirror MH1.
Tyler Wilson
2021-03-11 03:26:22 +0000 UTCThat price point is rather disappointing to see. I saw a video on YouTube saying $700 a box, and I thought it was just click bait. Didn't realize this was going to be the case.
Tyler McCoy
2021-03-11 03:26:04 +0000 UTCFaB 2022!!!
2021-03-11 03:24:18 +0000 UTCOf course, I'll be buying some anyway :/
Michael Martin
2021-03-11 03:23:44 +0000 UTCI was very excited for MH2. I love MH1. I might consider buying a collector box at $400. Maybe 1. But not $600. I think I would rather put the money towards set booster boxes. It IS going to be a successful product. And the collector boxes WILL sell out at that price. If they pull a commander legends, the price will sky rocket to $1000. If they pull a double masters it will sit at $350.

2021-03-11 03:22:13 +0000 UTCQ: assuming covid-1984 breakdown and travel starts to revert (note: we're FAR from that), what was the MTG population when they tried their first GP; and what's FAB's population now? The last part only James White know, and very tradable information
2021-03-11 03:22:03 +0000 UTCI'd go to that FaB event! I've gotten almost a dozen ppl into it and everyone of them played mtg before, and wants to play FaB now when we meet up instead of mtg. I think it's the speed of play and how the swings of the game are more level; rare do we have a game where someone wins with more than half their life total, usually it's down to the wire every time, which is fun!

2021-03-11 03:20:11 +0000 UTC"Can you imagine a Flesh and Blood Grand Prix Vegas Event in 2022 with LSS and every store and content creator attending?" Yes! Been envisioning it for a year now!
2021-03-11 03:17:51 +0000 UTCI appreciate the news and your opinion rudy. I was just sitting here going through the 150 commander reserved list cards that came in this week. My behavior along with everyone else's will tell wotc eventually the money will go elsewhere if they continue with these kind of price increases/secret lair print to oblivion behavior.
2021-03-11 03:17:02 +0000 UTCI think MTG & Pokemon still have the greatest chance for long term sustained growth... but I'm just a Timmy so who knows lol
2021-03-11 03:15:18 +0000 UTCYolo mh2
Matt Vanselow
2021-03-11 03:15:04 +0000 UTCI mean I'm still gonna buy MH collectors. Fetch lands will always hold value unless they start printing them in every available product. Which as a player, I wouldn't mind. But as a large investor, I and papa Hasbro both know that won't happen. I'm curious to see how this year goes and if Wotc will continue to push this price increase trend. I think they should stop while they're ahead.
Matthew Sutton
2021-03-11 03:11:23 +0000 UTCI was saying yesterday that ill buy a draft box of mh2 to keep and 1 to open but thats it. The fetches that arent shiny pringles will prob be worth 15ish dollars all said and done. Hard pass on mh2 for me There is no way im buyin a box of 400 collectors boxes for 2400 lmao

2021-03-11 03:09:36 +0000 UTCWait so u could only sells us one M2 collector box at 400 at starting price? Is there a price point that scares people? Im a little shocked

2021-03-11 03:09:15 +0000 UTCI dont see magic going anywhere. I dont see this angering anyone. Wizards has been pushing product out so fast that most people can't or won't keep up and moved their focus to RL cards hence the spike. Commander is now the format too. I dont see magic taking a back seat to anything. I see FAB being a great collector item.
2021-03-11 03:08:39 +0000 UTC:( I really liked Modern Horizons 1, this might price me out of anything aside from standard boxes. I have a warhammer addiction, gotta get those models, less budget room for magic 🤣
