I feel like this movie probably helped a lot of kids that were going through similar situations as Bastian, but this movie probably traumatized a bunch of kids as well hahaha. Enjoy!

So I just realized the horse is the mother. She must have had a long, slow death. Arteau calls Artax his only friend, and Sebestian clearly has no friends now. The grief, the confusion, begging her not to go, getting angry at being abandoned as she slowly fades away, the helplessness at just being able to watch and be unable to save her.
