Help me choose a movie to watch next!
Added 2025-02-04 17:00:07 +0000 UTCMy reaction to 50 First Dates will be up tomorrow, and I'm planning on watching There's Something About Mary soon as well! Help me choose a movie to watch next!

(UPDATE) She has confirmed that she plans on watching the theatrical version of Troy (2004), due to the DC being over 3 hours long.

2025-03-08 21:05:00 +0000 UTCI would like to also recommend another horror classic Christine. I know you don't like horror to much but it's a good one

2025-02-09 21:11:50 +0000 UTCI like the choices that you have given us, but there is one movie that I would really like to share with you because it seems that we have a similar taste in movies. The movie is called Dances With Wolves with Kevin Costner. If you do choose to watch this movie make sure you get the long extended version where it has the whole movie because they do cut the movie. Make sure your have some tissues

2025-02-09 19:01:00 +0000 UTCCoppola made 4 of the best films of the '70s: "Apocalypse Now," the first 2 "Godfather" films, and the criminally underrated "The Conversation" (which I'm hoping *someone* will finally react to eventually 🙏). But the rest of his filmography is a mixed bag.

2025-02-07 03:13:31 +0000 UTCThe weird thing to me about "We Were Soldiers" is that it's a Vietnam War movie presented like a WWII movie. It's still the only un-cynical movie about that war that I've ever seen, which I feel is kind of problematic given that time and history have told us otherwise that we had no business being involved in that conflict in the first place. 🤷♂️

2025-02-06 12:28:53 +0000 UTC"stories" in the Greek narrative are histories with an exaggerated element. But they are still part of history and should be approached with their accuracy as the cornerstone for any adaptation.

2025-02-06 10:08:57 +0000 UTCWhat does a fictional story by Homer have anything to do with being a historian? ^_^

2025-02-06 10:05:41 +0000 UTCI recommend another fantastic movie albeit little known and underrated. It's called Men of Honor with Robert De Niro and Cuba Gooding Jr. Maybe watch that sometime in the future if you want to feel inspired

2025-02-05 13:40:37 +0000 UTCIf it gets enough votes, she still might watch it. Keep pumping up those numbers, folks!
Byrd N. Hand
2025-02-05 05:10:58 +0000 UTCThe Final Cut at least eliminates the totally unnecessary 'private time with the Bunnies' segment (which also leads to a problematic plot detail later) and shortens the French plantation segment (which clumsily attempts to politicize the war).

2025-02-05 05:08:31 +0000 UTCPlatoon won 4 oscars but never wins these polls, hope you get to it sometime, its the best cast of all the movies.
JSin
2025-02-05 02:11:55 +0000 UTCSeriously Addie... How do you come up with these polls? "Siri, list the top battle/war movies of all time so that my Patreons won't be able vote on one because they're all fire." LOL I'm gonna go with Glory, but I hope it doesn't win because I don't know if I can afford to order Kleenex in bulk right now!
Raj Hudek
2025-02-05 00:16:49 +0000 UTCDefinitely "Glory"! That is one that my high school history teacher showed us years ago and it is such a great and impactful film and it's one that I think you will truly enjoy.

2025-02-04 22:49:36 +0000 UTCApocalypse now will expose the craziness of war. I highly recommend it

2025-02-04 22:15:38 +0000 UTCIt's classic and such a shame.

2025-02-04 21:58:50 +0000 UTCI chose Final Cut of APOCALYPSE NOW, but the Redux is just as good.

2025-02-04 21:21:10 +0000 UTCSince it looks like that Troy (2004) is winning the poll, say it with me: WE WANT THE DIRECTOR'S CUT! ✊ WE WANT THE DIRECTOR'S CUT! ✊ WE WANT THE DIRECTOR'S CUT! ✊ WE WANT THE DIRECTOR'S CUT! ✊ #TroyDirectorsCutForAddieCounts

2025-02-04 21:17:26 +0000 UTCApocalypse Now probably won't win...but Apocalypse Now all the f***ing way.

2025-02-04 20:56:38 +0000 UTCGreat poll Addie, lots of great choices, 'Fury' is one of the best modern war films, 'Dunkirk' in my opinion is better than '1917'. But 'Apocalypse Now' is one of my favorite films of all time. A masterpiece.

2025-02-04 20:23:58 +0000 UTCGlory is an amazing film and I hope it gets chosen. But there really is not a bad choice in the lot

2025-02-04 19:48:07 +0000 UTC"Apocalypse Now" is one of the best films ever made period. It just happens to be a war film. It's a must see! By far, Francis Ford Coppola's best!

2025-02-04 19:36:43 +0000 UTCJust adding a couple of additional war (or war-time at least) movie suggestions for next time it comes up. 🙂 (Clearly not an exhaustive list, just ones that popped out to me glancing at War films on Flickchart) - The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) - The Great Escape (1963) - Patton (1970) - The Duelists (1977) - Empire of the Sun (1987) - Three Kings (1999) - Enemy at the Gates (2001) - Downfall (2004) - The Imitation Game (2014)

2025-02-04 19:10:25 +0000 UTCIf you are going to do Troy (as a historian, I hate this film) do the directors cut!

2025-02-04 19:04:11 +0000 UTCWe Were Soldiers is an amazing movie

2025-02-04 18:54:15 +0000 UTCLooks like Addie is in a war movie mood to balance out the Rom-Coms. 😄 I’m going with Apocalypse Now, Platoon, and Troy on this one. (Troy isn’t quite as classic a war movie as the first two, but I kind of liked it and it’s been a while since I’ve seen it so I’m down for it. 🙂 The fight choreography with Brad Pitt as Achilles is pretty great!)
Doug
2025-02-04 18:50:32 +0000 UTCGlory or Dances with Wolves!
Randolph Tirazona
2025-02-04 18:13:40 +0000 UTCAgain all the good ones bottom of the list. Only had one film of interest in 2025. Maybe it's me and an age thing. Still my favourite reactor by the way. Just praying I can find something in the next month or two. Much Lubs
PHILLIP CORNISH
2025-02-04 18:11:36 +0000 UTCA very solid list. In my opinion the best American war movie is The Big Red One (1981). The best war movie overall is Come And See (1986) but there's no way I would want Addie to watch it.
Andre Agog
2025-02-04 17:54:18 +0000 UTCPlatoon is possibly the greatest Vietnam War movie of all time (and in my opinion it is). It's semi-autobiographical as it's heavily based on Oliver Stone's own experiences there. Little bit disappointed that it's coming in almost last, but it's also an older movie that most younger people have never heard of.
Alexis
2025-02-04 17:51:07 +0000 UTCGiven that she just watched "1917," I'd rather she do a film focusing on a different war this time. Plus, as someone else mentioned, the original 1930 version is more significant in terms of the history of film anyway.
Byrd N. Hand
2025-02-04 17:42:04 +0000 UTCAs a veteran I also love All Quiet On The Western Front. However that depends which one you watch. Its been remade as movie a 3 times. The original in the late 1930s, then one in the 70 and one that came out a few years ago. If you do a poll I'd suggest doing the 1930s original and the newest one. That being said. We Were Soldiers is my vote alone with Dunkirk and Glory. Honestly most movies in this poll besides Troy are worth it.
Thats MR. Baldamort
2025-02-04 17:41:43 +0000 UTCVoting for Glory. Great movie and appropriate for Black History Month.
Luis Fernandez
2025-02-04 17:27:35 +0000 UTCAll Quiet on the Western Front changed me, even as a veteran. To see the loss, the tragedy, and the uncaring, uninvolved persons who made the decisions affecting millions of lives in WW 1 affects me still.

2025-02-04 17:17:49 +0000 UTCI am so thrilled to see Glory return for a poll. Crossing my fingers and toes

2025-02-04 17:15:45 +0000 UTCAgreed, Alex; it's a good compromise between the original theatrical cut and the 'Redux' cut.
Byrd N. Hand
2025-02-04 17:14:56 +0000 UTCShe unfortunately saw it pre-channel... though I'd be all for a re-watch once she's seen his entire filmography.
Byrd N. Hand
2025-02-04 17:12:13 +0000 UTC... which is what we tend to want. 🤨
Byrd N. Hand
2025-02-04 17:10:22 +0000 UTCDefinitely Glory & Dunkirk.. I think you have seen most of Nolan Movie, Addie... The Prestige is a good Nolan film to see.
Alexander George
2025-02-04 17:10:12 +0000 UTCFor future reference, it would be far better to watch the 1930 original All Quiet before the modern version.

2025-02-04 17:09:02 +0000 UTCHowever, I STRONGLY recommend the 2019 Final Cut. #ApocalypseNowFinalCutForAddieCounts

2025-02-04 17:07:44 +0000 UTCThis is a travesty that they can’t all win, she needs to watch all of these movies at some point. Except Fury, the ending of that movie was so ridiculously implausible that my parents and I were actually laughing the whole time.
Thomas Wetherell
2025-02-04 17:06:59 +0000 UTCHappy Tuesday, Addie. All are great choices but my votes belong to Apocalypse Now (1979), Glory (1989), We Were Soldiers (2002), Troy (2004), Fury (2014) and Dunkirk (2017), basically most of the movies here.
Alex Tan
2025-02-04 17:06:34 +0000 UTCEasily the weakest title on this poll, as far as I'm concerned... so naturally it'll win. 🙄
Byrd N. Hand
2025-02-04 17:06:27 +0000 UTCHappy Tuesday, Addie! 😊 Great choices for this poll. "Glory" got my main vote. With "Troy" as my second choice. Have a great day today. 😊
Randee Carreno
2025-02-04 17:04:40 +0000 UTCGlory should be watched this month regardless of the outcome for Black History Month.

2025-02-04 17:04:21 +0000 UTCApocalypse Now is a must!
