A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN - Full Length Reaction!

You should watch Major League movies

Chris Capitano

The debate over whether Dottie let Kit score that run or not is raging to this day. For my part, I say no: Kit EARNED that run. All that resentment building up for years living in her sister's shadow gave Kit the drive she needed to plow right through. Plus, Dottie wouldn't sabotage her own team that way. To betray her teammates like that is something unforgivable. To lose is one thing, and she could still hold her head up high, but giving in is something completely different.

Yeah, this is a great film. I remember when it came out, I was more lukewarm about it. I recognized it was well-made, but I didn't feel "passionate" about it. But over the years, I've come to appreciate it more and more. I think part of my increasing admiration of it is that there are so few movies (or even, none) made like this anymore. It's a warm period piece (warm in tone, but also the film look) with big stars, and a moderate budget. It just hugs the viewer and isn't afraid to be sentimental and take its time. I know it's a cliche to say "they don't make movies like this anymore," but in this case, I think it might literally be true.

If you want to see more of Gena Davis I would also suggest Thelma and Louise. I haven’t seen it in a while so it may be a bit dated by now, but it had quite an impact in its day.

Daniel Goldberg

"Major League" is probably my favorite baseball movie. Juuuuuuust a bit outside.

Joe Blankenship

P.S. Another fun little thing on rewatch is in the very beginning Dottie telling the big brother to “take it easy his little brother, you’re bigger than him”, since it’s a foreshadowing of her own sibling rivalry with Kit. 🙂

Doug

A well written film, and Dottie definitely dropped the ball on purpose for her sister

Victor

I knew Addie would love this.

Andre Agog

Love this movie!! This movie is in my Top 25. Interested in where it sits for you and your followers. Very excited for Field of Dreams too!

Such a great film! 👏 On top of everything Addie mentioned, it's kind of fun seeing Tom Hanks playing a crotchety sarcastic drunk, it's not exactly the type of role he usually plays! 😄 (Also even though I know he's done film scores for a really long time, it's kind of funny seeing Hans Zimmer as the composer in the credits after things like Interstellar, Dark Knight, Gladiator, Wonder Woman, etc. )

Doug

And her brother Garry (also a director/actor... and also R.I.P.) played Walter Harvey in this movie.

It was the first time one of my choices won a poll, and what a great movie reaction. There are so many funny bits but also serious, heartwarming scenes. You're learning that most "sports" movies aren't about sports but use them for the narrative like that Rocky isn't about boxing. Keep up the good work!

I 100% second the rewatch reactions to those "now-lost" movies, including E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Ghostbusters (1984), Beetlejuice (1988) and Edward Scissorhands (1990).

The "Racine" stadium is Bosse Field in Southern Indiana where I grew up. It's easily recognizable by the Crawford Doors sign in the outfield. Today would have been my dad's birthday... and all I can think about while watching this film is how often he and I sat in that stadium eating peanuts and watching AAA Baseball. This film is very special to me for so many reasons. Thanks for the great reaction... and please call your parents if you can.

Crimson Ace

I always forget how great Jon Lovitz was in this, because he is in it for so little time. But he cracks me up every time.

other sporting movies you may enjoy, Secretariat, Cinderella man

I prefer "The Natural" (1984) Starring Robert Redford and Glenn Close.

Randolph Tirazona

Same! I had to check the credits to see if they were played by different actors.

They really did a great job of casting for the older versions of Kit and Dottie. I actually believed that they were just aged with an old-age makeup instead of actually being separate people. I only found out the truth a couple years ago.

In "A League of Their Own", Tom Hanks' character had the opposite characteristic that afflicted his character in "The Green Mile". There's nothing more satisfying to a man than emptying a super full bladder - not sex, not making a half-court basketball shot... nuthin'!!

ButtercupsTrueLove

This was a really well done, touching, fun and interesting movie. I saw this in the theater, and have watched it many many times since. It never gets old, because it was so very well done. I used to watch Laverne & Shirley religiously as a kid, and I have loved all the movies I have seen that Penny Marshall directed, especially this one and Big. RIP Penny Marshall :(

Yeah, they did a helluva good job finding older actresses who looked like Geena Davis and Lori Petty to play their characters' older selves. Also, that huge bruise on Alice's thigh was a real sustained injury by the actress during filming. Another one (Helen) actually broke her nose trying to catch a ball. And it has to be said: Madonna is a terrible actress -- UNLESS she's basically playing herself, as she pretty much was in this movie... and also "Desperately Seeking Susan."

Byrd N. Hand

It was in one of her holiday polls last month, but didn't win. I nominate "The Fly," but we'll likely have to wait until next October for it; also, though she only has a small role in it (and it was her first movie), "Tootsie." I wouldn't object to a re-watch of "Beetlejuice" from Addie, either, being one of her 4 now-'lost' reactions from the beginning of her channel.

Hey Addie a really good movie starring Geena Davis is called "The Long Kiss Goodnight". It also stars Samuel L Jackson. Hopefully one day you will watch it. It's a movie that has a Die Hard vibe to it

Speaking of baseball movies, for a more suspenseful one, I also suggest The Fan (1996) with Robert De Niro & Wesley Snipes and directed by Tony Scott. #TheFanForAddieCounts https://youtu.be/8-pZzmcxI_g?feature=shared

I also suggest The Da Vinci Code (2006 https://youtu.be/5sU9MT8829k?feature=shared), Angels & Demons (2009 https://youtu.be/ekfTP1UQG1o?feature=shared), and Inferno (2016 https://youtu.be/RH2BD49sEZI?feature=shared), all with Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon. #RobertLangdonForAddieCounts

Happy Monday, Addie. I'm so glad that you enjoyed A League of Their Own (1992). I get a good laugh from Jimmy telling Evelyn that "There's NO crying in baseball!" but when Betty "Spaghetti" Horn loses her husband, that's when you can cry in baseball. See you soon for Field of Dreams (1989). BTW, I share a birthday with Geena Davis. It's in exactly one week from tomorrow.

Alex Tan

Happy Monday, Addie! I hope that you had a great weekend. 😊 "There's no crying in baseball!!!" Such an iconic and memorable line from this movie. LOL! I love this movie so much! Such a great story, with such a great cast. This is one of my favorite baseball/sports films. Glad that you're going to be watching "Field of Dreams" also. No spoilers, just have a few tissues on hand for that one. Another fantastic baseball/sports movie that I very highly recommend is the 1984 movie "The Natural". Looking forward to watching this reaction later this evening. Have a great day today! 😊
