(It's listed on Amazon as "Original Version") The special effects hold up all these years later! I feel like this is an adult version of ET? Or I guess ET is the family-friendly version of Close Encounters since it came out after. Between the direction of Spielberg and the music of John Williams, both movies have a similar feel! Enjoy!

2024-02-05 08:33:30 +0000 UTCDefinitely a good movie, and it does mostly hold up. 🙂 Other than that the musical "conversation" always struck me as a little weird, it's a fun film. (Don't get me wrong, the music in that section is terrific, it's just thematically the whole thing makes no sense to me. I couldn't help thinking, for instance, how Arrival presented some really cool ideas for communicating with an unknown alien species, while here they just pull out a synthesizer. 🤷♂️) On a tangent, I think when I was watching this just now I ran into an issue with Addie watching a slightly different edit of the film than the one I pulled up on Mubi. It started out in sync but toward the end I kept having to resync the films by 10-30 seconds at a time either way. It was kind of confusing until I figured out why it was happening. 🙂 P.S. I like the musical cue of "When You Wish Upon a Star" at the climax as Roy is getting on the ship. Which ties back to the Pinocchio connection earlier in the film since that's where that song originally came from. It's Spielberg's and John William's way of saying Roy is getting his wish. 😊
