I think its pretty clear what Ed was expecting with his dad: a worthless deadbeat. Thats how he’s portrayed him in his mind for the last 10 tears, and even how the show portrayed him for the first half since it was being played out from Eds perspective. He’s been hating his dad for so long that the only thing he could imagine was him being absolutely despicable. Finding out that he’s a man that does care about his family and regrets that he had to leave them is really throwing him off.
