Hello again! It's been a while since the last block of Patreon news, given that casual updates and discussion on the Discord usually don't translate well to Patreon announcements.
As very little discussion makes it here, it's probably time to share where Distortions is at now.
First, let's do a quick recap of progress, broken down by game version:
1.17.1: For those unaware, this was the latest moddable version for quite some time. As such, ...

Hi there! Before I make another post recapping this year's progess, I'd like to make a quick announcement.
I'm happy to announce that early access mods will no longer require an internet connection to verify users. It took a few months of planning, threat modeling and some iterative design, but the end result should offer a good balance between security and convenience.
How it works
When a user successfully logs in for the first time, a token is generated and stored...

Hello all!
Back in Sepetember, I shared some ideas in a post discussing how environment cubemaps could be used to mimic screen distortion effects. A few iterations later, here we are!
For those interested in the technical details, this post will provide a brief writeup on how this effect operates. A lot has changed in the eights months of working on this technique, so let's take a deep dive!

Hello all!
If you've used Oculus MRC in the past, you'll know how painful it is to output decent footage. From the long, tedious process of setting up software to the Quest's unreliable video framerate and quality, the default implementation of MRC isn't ideal.
To remedy these issues, MRCPlus and custom client software will be released in the near future. A combination of the two aim to push Quest streaming to its full potential.
Here are some planned improvements...

Hello all!
While core mods are still awaiting major changes, I've got some exciting news. A full release of Burnout is coming to Quest!
For these unaware, Burnout is a mod which enables users to control various aesthetics tied to floor burn marks. The project originally started earlier this year as a mod that a user commissioned me to make for PC. This customer has been highly supportive of the Quest community in the past, and has greenlit a full port to the Quest platform!

It's been quite a year! Before we wrap things up for 2021, I'll quickly provide a rundown of some things planned for development (in order of priority):
- Unannounced collaborative project(s)
A few things stuck in development hell. Progress is sorely needed for these.
- Continued development of Distortions
This will consume a large portion of total development time.
- Return to posting test builds of Burnout
For those unfamiliar, Burnout is a burn mark cus...

Hello all!
If you've been following my previous work, you may recall some experiments with prebaked cubemap distortion effects. While that project offered decent results, I decided to spend more time investigating realtime distortion rendering. A few months later, we've got a working prototype mod! I'll be announcing the project in the coming days, here's a sneak-peak of the upcoming trailer.
Using similar techniques to the PC version, these walls aim to offer good visual quality ...

Hello again!
Quick update on core mods: We're currently awaiting a few things before wide scale version bumps can be made. With the Halloween update out of the way, we're now waiting on some improved modding tools to be finalized. Some community members are investigating modifications to how we "hook" into the game's functions, giving modders much more control over when/how their code is run. Exciting stuff, I know.
In other news, I'm currently working with a few member...

Looks like another game update, how exciting!
The latest update brought brand-new content to the game, along with some long-awaited changes to the playlist UI. We're once again waiting on a few core mods to update before posting submissions to #quest-mods and QuestBoard.
Now for the exciting part...
The new environment included some exciting new visual assets and shaders to play around with. This inspired me to experiment with some Quest-compatible alternatives fo...

Hi there!
First off, I'd like to thank you for your support. It seriously means so much to see people share their enthusiasm for Virtual Reality mods. The release of MRCPlus was a long-term milestone I'd been working toward for months, so I'm deeply appreciative of the positive feedback given by various members of the Quest community.
As of writing this post, Quest modders are awaiting a few core mods for Beat Saber's 1.17.1 update. The changes made in this version are very minor,...

Over the past 8 months, I've been working on a spectator camera tool for the Quest. Using Oculus's MRC system, this mod streams gameplay over the network to another device.
The video is a mock-up teaser that showcases the mod earlier in its development. The footage was originally recorded in mid-March, though new features have made the trailer somewhat obsolete.
Needless to say, I'm stoked to finally be able to release this mod to the public!
