Ragnar wants to join Athelstan in heaven because, in addition to being his intellectual equal, Athelstan was the only person he could completely trust. His marriage to Lagertha ended years ago. Rollo and Floki have already betrayed him. He doesn't love Aslaug. And he'll never be close to his young children the way he was to Bjorn and Gyda. As for Bjorn, he's clearly grooming him to be his successor. He has no other intention.

2025-11-12 18:02:03 +0000 UTCyou guessed right, it was kind of a Trojan horse :D this is based on real historical records, in 860 AD, the Vikings, led by Hastein and Bjorn, attacked the Italian city of Luna, to get inside, Hastein claimed he was on his deathbed and wanted to convert to Christianity, arranged for his "funeral procession," complete with a coffin carried by his men, to enter the city :) it was quite amusing listening to all those confessions near the coffin :D damn Seer spoiled the whole thing xD also according to the historical records it was actually Rollo who led the siege of Paris :) he was the one who sailed off to raid the west
