Any contact with Aokiji would have definitely hurt him, however, if you cleverly shape your body around the attack (by making a hole the right size) then there is no contact, and no damage. This isn't easy to do however, it likely required precise Observation Haki on Aokiji's part to even be able to react to it on time, so if Whitebeard's attack was like a gum-gum gattling he probably would have been hit
